Facebook Home will have ads (just not at first)

This week the Android user experience known as Facebook Home has been revealed, and with it, whispers of advertisements served to you front and center. Not unlike what you’ve seen with Kindle series of tablets, the Facebook Home app will indeed be serving advertisements to you through the lockscreen portion of the UI. What’s not known at the moment is if this will be a reality just on the app download version of Home or if it’ll be present on the Facebook Phone experience too.

dffgsfdgsdfgs

If you’ll take a peek at our Facebook Phone vs Facebook Home article you’ll find that there are indeed a few differences between the two. With the app download you’ll not be getting notifications from all of your apps the way you will with the HTC first smartphone (see our hands-on here!) With advertisements popping up in the Question and Answer portion of the presentation today, we must assume there’s another big feature difference between the two.

“There are no ads in this [Facebook Home] yet, I’m sure that one day there will be.” – Mark Zuckerberg

After being asked about advertisements and hearing that response, another Facebook team member made it clear that ads would be coming to the Cover Feed portion of the Facebook Home experience. Soon after this, Zuckerberg was asked to repeat whether or not there’d be ads on the Cover Feed – responding with a resounding “yup!”, it was made clear that Facebook believes “[advertisements] are just another kind of content.”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Another question was asked during the Q and A session on searching:

Q: How will what I search for influence the ads I see?

A: Searches will be tracked in your activity log, and search won’t influence ads at all.

So no worries on having your activities tracked in Facebook Home… for advertising through the search bar, anyway. Sound reasonable to you? Let us know if you’re all about the Facebook Home experience right this minute!

Have a peek at our new Facebook Home tag portal as well as our Android Hub – we’re coming at you from all angles!

Facebook Home run-down: everything you need to know

Facebook announced and showed off its new Facebook Home start screen/home screen feature for Android devices today, and there was a lot of new stuff that the social network went over, including features like Chat Heads, Cover Feed, and of course, the new HTC First smartphone built specifically for Facebook junkies. However, here’s everything you need to know about today’s announcements.

20130404_101723-M

Facebook Home is essentially a family of apps that can run on any Android device, although HTC announced the HTC First, which is a new smartphone specifically built with Facebook Home in mind. This device will become available starting April 12 for $99 after signing a new two-year contract with AT&T.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasizes that Facebook Home is built around people, not apps, which means that users can spend more time interacting with their friends and families on their smartphones, rather than take unnecessary time to switch between all the apps that you have piled onto your Android handset.

Screen Shot 2013-04-04 at 2.20.49 PM

Facebook Home includes Cover Feed, which displays recent status updates from your friends, with notifications to go along with them, only this time they’re more integrated into the Android OS. The Cover Feed is the first thing you see in Facebook Home, and it’s there to make sure that you receive all of the important updates from your group of friends.

There’s also a new messaging platform in Facebook Home called Chat Heads, which allows you to easily chat with your Facebook friends without leaving the app that you’re currently in, which means that there’s no app-switching required. In Chat Heads, a small avatar icon will appear in the corner of the screen when you receive a message. From there, you can tap on it to reply to the message, and then flick it off of the screen to go back to what you were doing.

Facebook Home will be available starting on April 12, and it’ll be a free download in the Google Play store. Facebook notes that they’re not trying to “fork” Android with their new product, and are mostly trying to supplement Google’s OS. Either way, Facebook Home will work on most Android devices, and the new home screen launcher will soon work for the HTC One, One X, One X+, Samsung Galaxy S III, GALAXY S 4, and the Galaxy Note II. Plus, Facebook plans to update the launcher every month with new features and support for more devices, which is always a good thing in our book.

Facebook Home Cover Feed lockscreen detailed

Facebook Home brings a variety of features that make it more than just an app. One of the new features will be the new “Cover Feed”. Cover Feed will be the first thing you see when you open Facebook Home. It will bring you the latest and important status updates from your closest friends as soon as you open the app. That will make sure that you never miss out on an important event again.

Facebook Cover Feed

Facebook is concentrating on making your phone more about people rather than just apps, something that Zuckerberg has been echoing throughout the entire event. With Cover Feed and Facebook Home, you will always be connected with your closest friends and family members. Everything is available to you at a moment’s notice. Like Zuckerberg said, everything is just “one swipe away”.

Facebook Home will be available on the upcoming HTC First, that is set to be announced. It does feature lackluster specs, including a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB of RAM, 5MP rear-facing camera, and a 1.6MP front-facing camera. The only things carrying the device are 4G LTE and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. However, luckily for us Facebook lovers, there are plans for more phones coming in the future.

Alongside Facebook’s Cover Feed, Facebook has announced another new feature called Chat Heads, that gives you an “immediate personal connection” to those you’re close with. Even if you’re using another app, if someone messages you, you will be notified via a bubble on the top corner of your phone. Be sure to check through the latest Facebook news today through our Facebook Tag Portal. Also check out our Android Hub for the latest, important info on Android.

Facebook Home available April 12th, updates each month

Facebook just announced Facebook Home, an all-new start screen/home screen of sorts for Android devices. The company took some time to demo the new software, and show us all the cool goodies, but what people really want to know is when Android users will be able to grab Facebook Home and use it for themselves.

20130404_100107-M

Facebook Home will be available as a free download in the Google Play store starting on April 12, which is just next week, so it seems users won’t have to wait long to get a hold of it. Off the bat, Facebook Home will only be available for Android phones, while tablet support is in the works and will become available in the future.

Once you have Facebook Home installed, the company says that you’ll have the choice of trying it out once, or you can set it up so it’s always in use instead of the standard launcher that comes with your Android handset. Facebook says that Home will be available for tablets “in the coming months.”

As for devices that Facebook Home will work best on, Facebook as partnered with a handful of companies, both phone makers and carriers, including HTC, Samsung, EE, Qualcomm, Sony, Huawei, Alcatel One Touch, Lenovo, ZTE, AT&T, and Orange. Plus, Home will have more features and will be offered on more devices as time goes on. Facebook says it plans to release these kinds of updates once a month on average.

HTC first official: Facebook Phone unveiled

This week the folks at Facebook have teamed up with HTC to show off the first of what may be many Facebook Phones in what’s called the HTC first. This smartphone brings the full Facebook software experience to you in an Android-based user interface called “Facebook Home”. This smartphone is a mid-range unit when it comes to hardware specifications and will be offered in a variety of color casings.

20130404_103818-M

With the HTC first you’ll be rolling out with a 4.3-inch LCD display with no less than 720p resolution for your everyday sharp Facebook interactions. This device will be rolling out with a lovely Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 dual-core processor, this being the same SoC that you’ll find on the Samsung Galaxy S III and the DROID RAZR HD. On the back of the HTC first you’ll find a 5-megapixel camera while the front works with a 1.6-megapixel camera for Facebook video chat and messages.

UPDATE: This device is NOT using the Snapdragon S4 as previously noted – instead it is one of the first devices on the market to be using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400. This smartphone will also be coming with 3G/4G “multimode” LTE and will be available on the 12th of April for $99 USD attached to a 2-year contract.

You’ll be knocking out the apps with 1GB of RAM and a brand new user interface that’s based loosely on HTC’s own Sense 4.5. You’ll of course have wi-fi, 4G LTE from AT&T (at first, additional carriers on the way we must expect), and Android 4.1.2 right out of the box. We’ll be presenting some fabulous hands-on action with this device soon – there we’ll have additional insight in to how this device functions and if it’ll be the smartphone you’ve just got to have in 2013.

Facebook “not building a phone and not building an operating system”

Mark Zuckerberg took the stage today at Facebook’s event. He stated that the social network is “not building a phone and not building an operating system”, but something that will make phones center around the people, instead of just the apps. He says that Facebook wants to build “the best experience for every person on every phone” He says, “You don’t need to fork android to do this, you don’t even need to modify the operating system.”

Facebook Android

If Facebook were to build a phone, it would only bring a new experience to only 10-20 million people. But Zuckerberg states that that wouldn’t be fair for the billions of people that use the social network. He says that thanks to Android and its openness, Facebook is able to bring a brand new experience easily to a majority of its users.

So Facebook isn’t looking to build an operating system, but instead be an Android launcher. He focuses on “the home screen”, which is why the new app will be called “Home”. The new Facebook Home will allow users to easily access their Facebook app, but instead of just being an app, it will bring so much more to the user. You will be able to see your phone through people and not apps.

Facebook is bringing a brand new experience to all Android users in the form of “Facebook Home”. It will be include a bunch of new features not seen on the Facebook app, including “Cover Feed”. Check out all of the new features that will be coming with “Facebook Home” through our Facebook Tag Portal. Also, check out our Android Hub to find the latest, important news in the Android world.

Facebook Home on Android event: we’re here!

Hey everyone! In just a few moments, the Facebook Home on Android event is set to go live, and we’re here to bring you all the bits and details as soon as they appear. Earlier today, we saw AT&T CEO and president Ralph de la Vega enter into Building 16 on 1 Hacker Way, signaling that AT&T, like before, will most likely be getting exclusive rights to Facebook and HTC’s upcoming phone.

Facebook Home on Android event we're here

Facebook is set to debut its new Facebook on Home software, which at first we thought would be Facebook’s custom Android operating system, but it may in fact be more of a launcher. We’ll find out which is which soon, but our bets are lying with the latter option. Of course, the launcher or OS is going to be highly integrated with Facebook, and Facebook will be replacing several default apps with its own. For example, it will most likely be replacing Android’s default messaging app with its own messaging app, which will handle both Facebook Messages as well as SMS messages.

The HTC/Facebook phone set to debut today isn’t much at all. It is codenamed the HTC Myst, however it may be released as the HTC First. The specs are extremely lackluster. It has a 4.3-inch 720p display, dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB RAM, 5MP rear-facing camera, 1.6MP front-facing camera, Sense UI 4.5 (with Facebook modifications), Bluetooth 4.0, and Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. Jelly Bean and 4G LTE are the only features that make this phone worthwhile.

The event is starting in just a few minutes, so stick around to see the latest features Facebook will have to offer to the Android operating system. Be sure to keep track of our Facebook Tag Portal for the latest news from both this event, as well as future and past events pertaining to everyone’s “favorite” social network. Also be sure to check out our Android Hub for the most important news in the Android world.

HTC first Facebook phone press photo leaked

Those of you still skeptical about the possibility of an HTC Facebook Phone can toss in the rest of your chips – there’s been a full leak of the so-called “HTC first” this afternoon. This leak includes one extremely clear photo of the device in question from the notoriously accurate @evleaks, leaker of so many devices such as this in this same manner that we’ve simply come to trust the man. This device is one that will be launching with Facebook’s own customized user interface over Android later this week.

BG33fUDCQAEBzDh

It’s also become apparent via this same source that Facebook for Android – the application you’re using right this minute if you’re working with the main Android-based Facebook app – will need to be updated later this week in order to work with the new system. The new system has been once again confirmed to be called “Facebook Home” as well.

For those of you wondering what this device will be like, hardware-wise, we’ve got a bit of a look at that too! Have a peek at the following list, then head back to the post Facebook Home leaked – the HTC Facebook Phone spills its guts. This device will be bringing on some relatively mid-tier specifications and will be aiming at the everyman, if you pardon the expression.

• HTC Myst (code-name)
• 4.3-inch display, 720p
• AT&T 4G LTE
• 1GB RAM
• Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor (MSM8960) (same as Galaxy S III)
• 5 megapixel camera on back
• 1.6 megapixel camera on front
• Sense UI 4.5 (Facebook Home modifications onboard)
• Bluetooth 4.0
• Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean

Don’t forget to check and see if the HTC Facebook Phone belongs in your pocket! We’ll be live in effect at the Facebook event this Thursday – catch SlashGear through our most excellent Facebook tag portal – we’ll have everything you need to be in the know from start to finish!

Facebook Home leaked – the HTC Facebook phone spills its guts

It’s time to check out the Facebook Phone early – a full software build from the device has been leaked and it would appear that HTC is, indeed, onboard. What we’re having a look at here is a full APK (application for Android) that will live inside the device code-named HTC Myst. This device has been leaked before, and according to the leak Android Police has secured, (and promises isn’t an April Fools joke,) it’s set to be a real oddity in the market.

facebookphone

Hardware: HTC Myst

The first place we’ll be seeing Facebook’s new software is the HTC smartphone still code-named “Myst”. We’ll likely see this device shown by HTC later this week with the name “Facebook Phone by HTC” or something equally appropriate. The device is being delivered as – more or less – an idea palm-sized smartphone made to compete with the size segment Apple is still king of at the moment.

• HTC Myst (code-name)
• 4.3-inch display, 720p
• AT&T 4G LTE
• 1GB RAM
• Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor (MSM8960) (same as Galaxy S III)
• 5 megapixel camera on back
• 1.6 megapixel camera on front
• Sense UI 4.5 (Facebook Home modifications onboard)
• Bluetooth 4.0
• Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean

Sound like the mid-range winner for you? Will Facebook offer this device for sale straight from their site? That might be a winning situation – something like Google Play does with the Google Nexus smartphone and tablet lineup?

Facebook Home App

Facebook Home will be essentially a Home Screen Replacement app. If you’re working with Android on your smartphone, you’re able to download a variety of Home Screen Replacement apps that will allow you to work with a user interface that’s totally different from what you’re working with right out of the box. Here with Facebook Home, it would seem that everything will be just a bit different – from your lockscreen down to your settings.

Some interesting bits and pieces discovered in the Facebook Home APK thus far:

• TouchWiz permissions (for future Samsung smart devices)
• Icon changes (simple differences making Android look more “Facebook-like”)
• Google button (indicating Facebook’s willingness to use Google – not just Bing)
• Chat Heads – a new way this user interface handles your contacts
• Facebook Apps out-of-box integration

Given what we’re seeing here in this, effectively a full leak of Facebook’s intentions, it would appear that the HTC Myst will be a device that works with Facebook Home, one of the first (or only) Facebook Phones on the market. Otherwise it may be that Facebook releases Facebook Home as a stand-alone app you can download yourself for your own device – wouldn’t that be fabulous?

The Full Story

We’ll be live in-effect at the Facebook event later this week – stay tuned to SlashGear for the big show, starting Thursday, April 4th at 10AM PST! Make sure you have a peek at our Facebook tag portal until then and keep up to date on all things Facebook coming your way!

HTC “Facebook phone” Android software integration tipped

When the original Facebook phone was introduced, it was created by HTC, and it certainly didn’t do very well on the market. With both the HTC Salsa and the HTC ChaCha having been released and selling so few units that they didn’t warrant a follow-up in the many, many quarters that followed, it doesn’t seem very logical that the social network and the manufacturer would want to create such an amalgamation again. And it’s not as if HTC is swimming in cash at the moment, either.

htcfacebook

But here it is, courtesy of a couple of tipsters speaking with the New York Times about a Facebook phone to be revealed at next weeks’ Facebook event. Here the suggestion is that both a Facebook employee and “another person” who shall remain nameless were briefed on a project coming up – a so-called “special version of Google’s Android software system”. With the wording the NYT uses, it would appear that this software could appear on a new phone OR a phone that’s already coming on quick to the market – perhaps the HTC One?

“The software will debut on a handset made by HTC, according to a Facebook employee and another person who were briefed on the announcement.” – New York Times

Facebook has repeatedly denied that they’d be making a smartphone – but there’s never really been a denial of the possibility of a smartphone with major Facebook integration. Now that Facebook’s level of involvement with the iPhone is so base, might it be time that the social network gets big on Android?

With the launch of the HTC One here in the United States so very close (we hope), we can’t help but wonder if these two events might coincide. Keep your eyes tuned to two tag portals, both Facebook and HTC will be running hot next week – and we’ll more than likely see some manner of leak happening before then. More than we already have, that is.

And don’t miss the big event – 10AM PST on April 4th right here on SlashGear!
