Facebook Graph Search: A Great Strategic Move

facebook search graph screen Facebook Graph Search: A Great Strategic MoveEarlier today, we laid out the basic functionality of the new Graph Search live from the Facebook HQ in Menlo Park. Beyond the new features, it is interesting to look at how this will help Facebook going forward, including monetization. The “business” question was raised during the Q&A sessions and it is completely legitimate, especially when you think about the potential infrastructure cost of running this resource-intensive, 100% personalized, feature. Facebook is known to be a great engineering company, so there is little to worry about how much computing resources will be spent as Facebook will undoubtedly run it efficiently. What’s more interesting is that while Facebook wants to project an image of humility around Graph Search, this is definitely a key launch in the company’s history – here’s why in five points: (more…)

Loccit Puts All Your Social Networking Activities in Print

I used to keep a diary until I realized that I was just copying down events and things I said about my day from my social media accounts. Not that I share personal details or too much information online. However, I have realized that it’s easier to sum up my day in 140 characters than spend about 30 minutes a day to write it all down.

Loccit

Compiling everything and printing a modern diary sounds like hard work, though, which is why I find the concept of Loccit so appealing. It’s an online service that lets you print and bind your posts and updates from various social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Loccit ships to Europe and the US, although the prices aren’t going to be so friendly to your wallet: a hardback diary costs £14.99 (~$25 USD), and each page after the twentieth will cost 20 pence (about 32 cents.)

What do you think of the concept? Would you want all your online memories printed out, or are they best left “in the cloud?”

Facebook Privacy Message Is Pointless. Stop Posting

I’ve noticed the privacy message over the week-end, but I didn’t think much about it until it started to show up in more and more feeds. Basically, the idea was that by posting a simple message prohibiting the use of your information, you would be protected from what many see as invasion of their privacy, even if the Facebook terms of use say otherwise. Of course, posting such a message has no legal consequences. It reads like this: (more…)

Web-Based Instagram Profiles Are Here and They’re VERY Facebook-esque

Up until now, Instagram profiles have only been viewable from the app (or through some sort of a third-party site/client). But AllThingsD reports that you’ll now be able to fire up any web browser and have access to any public Instagram account, making it approximately 1000000% easier to stalk people using the service. Oh, and did I mention it basically looks like the design of its Facebook overlord? More »

1M Facebook User Emails Allegedly Purchased For… $5

facebook user data leakBogonil Shopov, a Bulgarian blogger, says that he has managed to purchase 1 million Facebook users for a mere $5 – a pittance for email marketers and spammers. The data was sold on a site called “Gigabucks”, and so far, the Facebook ID seemed legitimate, so the Facebook security team has promptly contacted Bogonil.

According to Bogonil, Facebook wanted to keep their conversation “a secret”, here’s an extract of the Facebook email he published on his blog: (more…)

Twitter’s Favorite Button Could Have Been a Thanks Button

If you’re a Twitterer, you’re probably very familiar with the Favorite button on tweets. It’s Twitter’s equivalent to the Facebook ‘Like’ and a way to show appreciation to a good tweet, a weird tweet, a tweeted link or any tweet without replying or retweeting. It’s fun and it works. It also could have been known as ‘Thanks’. More »
