Olympia Circuits shows Arduino datalogger and Arno AddOns at Maker Faire 2013

Olympia Circuits is best known for its Arno board and Arno Shield, which are designed to ease the Arduino learning curve by providing a bevy of pre-wired sensors and controls along with detailed instructions for several DIY projects. The company announced a couple of new products at Maker Faire this past weekend: the Arno Digital RGB Add-On and the SODA HE-1.0 Arduino datalogger. With the former, your Arno simply gains three RGB LEDs, while the latter stands for “Simple, Open Data Acquisition, High Efficiency.” It’s an Arduino board with screw terminals designed around Atmel‘s ATmega32u4 that features a real-time clock (RTC) with battery backup, a high-precision ADC and a microSD card slot. The RTC can either wake the entire board or trigger an interrupt at set intervals, which makes the board very power efficient when used in the field. Olympia Circuits will be updating its website with more info shortly (including availability and pricing). Until then, don’t miss our hands-on gallery below.

Poutine-Flavored Soda is for People With Iron Stomachs

Have you ever heard of poutine? No? Well, it’s a Canadian dish that’s made with french fries which have been topped with brown gravy and cheese curds. Other variations exist, but that’s basically what the dish is.

Doesn’t sound very appetizing, does it? It probably has a certain appeal, though, since has been around since the late 1950s. Now take that dish and imagine it as a drink… then take a sip of Seattle-based Jones Soda’s Poutine Soda and see if it matches your imagination or expectations.

Poutine Drink

Jones Soda describes the drink as having “a nice balance of rich, savory gravy over a starchy potato base, and accented with those fatty, cheesy notes you expect in a plate of poutine.”

I haven’t tried it myself, but others have, and I’ll leave you to gauge how good or bad it was based on their reactions:

Oh Man, This Genius Guy Created a Robot to Steal from Vending Machines

You could use measuring tape to steal a can of soda from a vending machine but if you’re a genius, why not just invent a freaking robot to do the dirty work for you? This guy did just that. He inserts his robot inside the vending machine and controls it to grab as many sodas as possible. Awesome. More »

What Kind of Sorcery Lets You Filter Water Out of Coke?

I have so many questions about being able to filter water out of coke. I don’t even care why. But does it tast like Coke flavored water? Or water flavored coke? Or maybe even just carbonated sugar water without the cola? The guy makes it seem like it taste disgusting and that’s the complete opposite of Coca Cola. Does that mean Crystal Pepsi is hiding inside Coke? More »

Lonely Mountain Cola: If The Hobbits Made Their Own Soda…

If hobbits had their own brand of soda, it would be best to call it Lonely Mountain Cola. For those of you unfamiliar with the story, that’s a reference to the mountain which holds the hobbits’ treasure that was stolen by the greedy and wicken dragon, Smaug.

Lonely Mountain Cola

I don’t know what Hobbit-made soda would taste like, though. All I know is that they’re smaller than your average soda cans and definitely better-looking in more ways than one.

These LOTR concept soda can designs were created by the people behind the Lonely Mountain Cola Co. Facebook page, which was created to “set up as a cross-realm/inter-dimensional/multiverse experience dedicated to supporting the Dwarves of Middle-earth in their quest of getting their home back.”

TARDIS Soda Machine is Sweeter on the Inside

Looks like the TARDIS’ chameleon circuit is sort of working now. The TARDIS still looks like a phone box, but at least it was half-successful in trying to disguise itself as a soda vending machine.

This is actually the work of some pretty talented nerds who had both a love of soda and a love for Doctor Who – both of which can not be quenched. Epic Comics in Orlando, FL took their boring old soda machine and converted it into this awesome TARDIS.

I guess this means that there is a Doctor inside who feels like he is in a time loop from hell; damned to roam the endless halls of the TARDIS in search of cans of pop at every push of the buttons, before walking back to the door and dropping them in the slot for your enjoyment. Good work. Finally the Doctor has been outsmarted. Not to mention enslaved. You guys are evil! But I love it.
