Ice Cream Sandwich update now available for AT&T’s Sony Xperia Ion

Ice Cream Sandwich update now available for AT&T's Sony Xperia Ion

At long last, the illustrious Android ICS refresh can finally be enjoyed by proud owners of that AT&T-branded Xperia Ion. Naturally, this long-awaited update brings a slew of new features over to Sony’s 4.6-inch handset, including an enhanced browser, offline reading mode, the beloved facial unlocking method first introduced with Ice Cream Sandwich and the promise of improvements in mobile hotspot / WiFi speeds. Additionally, AT&T says there are other tweaks in calendar and email that should, in theory, help you stay better organized, while the Maps and YouTube should also perform better “when rotating between portrait and landscape views.” Sound good? You’ll find all the setup details at the source below, and don’t forget to tell us how it’s playing out for you.

iOS 6 now available to download for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch (update: full changelog)

iOS 6 now available to download for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

Cupertino’s newest hardware may have us purring, but Apple hasn’t left those of us with existing hardware out in the cold. iOS 6 should be appearing as an available update right now, or at least very shortly — depending on how taxed those servers get. It’ll be compatible with every iPhone since the 3GS, iPod touch 4G / 5G and this-and-last-year’s vintage of the iPad. Given the inexorable march of technology, some of the newer features won’t work on the older devices, but you can use our compatability checker to determine what new things you’ll be able to do in the next few hours.

We’ve had notes from our tipsters that the update is arriving a few minutes early (with photographic proof above), but so far we’ve had nothing here.

[Thanks, Jim]

iOS 6 GM seed now available for developers

iOS 6 seeded to developers ahead of official launch

Developers, start your engines: the GM (Golden Master) seed of iOS 6 is now available and ready for download on Apple’s Developer page. Essentially, the GM seed is the final version of the OS sent out to developers — as an opportunity to fully test their apps — before the rest of the general public, which will take place on September 19th. The Xcode 4.5 GM seed is now available as well. Head to the link below, log into your developer account, and venture over to the iOS Dev Center to find the download links.

Update: it looks like it’s fully working now. Hop to it!

Official: Sprint Galaxy Nexus getting Jelly Bean update today (update: Nexus S 4G, too)

Official Sprint Galaxy Nexus getting Jelly Bean update today

Well, well, would you look at that? Staying true to what we’d heard yesterday, it appears that long-awaited Android 4.1 refresh is finally making its way to Sprint’s own flavor of the Galaxy Nexus. As expected, the Jelly Bean update brings a slew of familiar, but rather marvelous features to the Now Network’s GNex, including Google Now, an improved notification and voice search system, offline dictation and, of course, a smoother UI that’s made possible by Mountain View’s now-famed Project Butter. Unfortunately, we can’t say the same about the Nexus S 4G, as the 4.1.x goods are still MIA for this device — however, we’ll be sure to let you know if that changes any time soon. In the meantime, those lucky Sprint Galaxy Nexus owners can eagerly “check now” for updates on their handset, and don’t forget to tell us how much you’re liking it so far.

Update: We’re receiving tips that Android 4.1 is now available to Nexus S 4G users, too. Word is that it’s a phased rollout, so check now and then check often. [Thanks, Jesse]

Adobe updates Photoshop Touch with support for Retina displays, bigger imagesAdobe has updated its tablet-friendly version of Photoshop to v1.3, bringing along one change that’ll make new iPad owners very happy indeed. The interface and text have been up-rezzed to support the Retina display and 12-megapixel images, while everyone else can edit pictures of up-to 10-megapixels in size. The company’s also throwing in two new effects — shred and colorize — plus new three-finger gestures to ease navigation and a raft of minor bug fixes. So, come on, let’s see what masterpieces your jam-smeared digits can create.

Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 4 will support HiDPI, MacBook Pro Retina Display in ‘the coming months’

You know who’s likely to buy the MacBook Pro with Retina Display? Creative professionals (obviously). So you know what programs should really be optimized for that 2,880 x 1,800 screen? Try Photoshop, or Lightroom. Adobe hears your frustration, and apparently empathizes mightily: the company just posted a blog post promising Photoshop CS6, Lightroom 4 and Photoshop Touch will support HiDPI, including the MacBook Pro’s Retina Display, within the “coming months.” (No, this near-term update does not include Photoshop Elements, unfortunately.) While that timetable is on the vague side, the outfit says having a Creative Cloud membership will ensure you get that update sooner. Until then, your frankengadget renders will still look a little blurry, sorry.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 joins the ICS party with Android 4.0.4 update

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 joins the ICS party with Android 4.0.4 update

If 8.9 was the number of inches you required from your Samsung Galaxy tab, you may have been a little frustrated at the general lack of much expected ICS updates. Especially as many of your Galaxy cohorts had already received theirs. Well, wait no more, as the download is finally here in the US. As you might expect it’s 4.0.4, and it apparently comes with a new — and many say better — version of TouchWiz. Better slide that finger down about 8.7-inches across the screen, and dig up those update settings then.

Ice Cream Sandwich update won’t be coming to HTC’s Incredible S, says Bell Mobility

Ice Cream Sandwich update won't be coming to HTC's Incredible S, says Bell Mobility

Even though Jelly Bean’s the latest mobile OS to come out of Mountain View, there are still OEMs and carriers working on delivering the not-so-fresh Ice Cream Sandwich update to some of their earlier handsets. Now, unlike what we’d previously heard, it appears HTC’s Incredible S won’t be on the receiving end of said 4.0.x refresh, with Bell Mobility taking to Twitter to reveal that the Taiwanese outfit “will not be updating the Incredible S with ICS.” Still, things could potentially take a turn for the best, as the Canadian carrier told a cheerless S owner, “If that changes, I’ll let you know.” As for us, well, we’ll have to hold off on making any changes to our current Ice Cream Sandwich list.

Mild-mannered Samsung Galaxy S II update brings Isis mobile payment support

Mobile payments, those made from a phone and typically via NFC, haven’t exactly had a huge impact on the average American consumer just yet, but look past that and you’ll see a battle is brewing. Google had been making the most noise, with its Google Wallet, but today the competing service Isis just launched its first proper salvo. The T-Mobile version of the Galaxy S II is currently receiving an OTA update (T989UVLH1) that, among a few other tweaks, enables support for Isis NFC payments, making it the first such device on the market. Many more are inbound from AT&T and Verizon as well, setting the stage for an epic virtual currency battle that only the peaceniks at the Mobile Payments Committee stand a chance of mitigating.

Ubuntu 12.10 adds Photo Lens for searching photos stored locally and online

Ubuntu 1210 adds Photo Lens for searching photos stored locally and online

If Ubuntu is your OS of choice, you’ve already been enjoying so-called lenses to help you search through your music, videos, apps and documents. So why not a search filter for photos? Why not indeed, said the folks at Canonical. The dev team has just updated the operating system (version 12.10) with a Photo Lens that lets you search your pics by name, tag or EXIF data. What’s more, in addition to searching photos stored locally, you can pull in pictures stored on sites like Facebook and Flickr, because who knows how many of your cameraphone photos bypassed your computer and went straight to the web?
