Hasta La Gadget!

Version 2.0 of the PlayStation Vita’s firmware has just gone live, bringing with it PS Plus and a handful of new features. Thanks to the fresh update, the handheld’s browser can be used without quitting games and has been sped up and overhauled with a revamped rendering engine and optimized GPU performance. In addition, the video application on Sony’s portable has been bolstered to play 1080p video, and a brand-new email app has arrived with notifications and support for up to five accounts in tow. If gamers have the itch to transfer content from their PC to their Vita, the “two-dot-oh” release allows the mobile rig to connect wirelessly to computers and pull down content. Amidst all the announcements made at the California Theatre earlier today, Apple very quietly pushed out a fresh version of its famed (and at times controversial) video editing software, Final Cut Pro. Inside v10.0.6 users can find an array of new additions and improvements that will most certainly be welcomed with open arms by the FCPX crowd, making this the most notable update since bundling in those multicam and broadcast monitoring features. Among these new traits are RED camera support for native REDCODE RAW editing, the ability to add freeze frames to the timeline with a simple keystroke, novel audio controls for use while tinkering with multicam clips and a revamped “Share” interface for exporting projects. The Final Cut Pro update can be downloaded now from the usual spot, and, of course, it comes at no extra cost for those who’ve already shelled out the $300. If you’re a social media junkie and TweetDeck is your pusherman, you may or may not be happy to know that the Twitter-owned application has received a cosmetic update — one which inches the platform further away from the post-buyout product that power users once knew and loved. While subtle, the latest software bump brings enhanced, adjustable fonts and a brand new “lighter theme” that features dark text against a light background. The update is now available for Windows, Chrome and Mac web users. As for you app fans, Chrome and Windows requires a restart, while Mac users will need to visit the App Store. Those looking to keep it retro can always get their download on at OldApps.

The original Tablet S has already absorbed a few interesting updates and now it’s getting one more: devices are waking up to an Android 4.0.3 update that brings significant additions like a Guest Mode for creating restricted user accounts, revamped media and social aggregation apps, and six assignable macro buttons on the IR Remote Control app. Sony has also bolstered its Small Apps function, allowing you to overlay a browser, IR remote and other utilities in a window on top of another app. What this update isn’t is Jelly Bean, which is headed to the Tablet S’s similarly-named replacement, the Xperia Tablet S.

Cupertino’s newest hardware may have us purring, but Apple hasn’t left those of us with existing hardware out in the cold. iOS 6 should be appearing as an available update right now, or at least very shortly — depending on how taxed those servers get. It’ll be compatible with every iPhone since the 3GS, iPod touch 4G / 5G and this-and-last-year’s vintage of the iPad. Given the inexorable march of technology, some of the newer features won’t work on the older devices, but you can use our compatability checker to determine what new things you’ll be able to do in the next few hours.

We’ve had notes from our tipsters that the update is arriving a few minutes early (with photographic proof above), but so far we’ve had nothing here.
