Sony Ericsson Windows Phone Jolie Prototype Arrives On eBay

Sony Ericsson Windows Phone Jolie Prototype Arrives On eBayYou know something? Back in the day when there was no Sony Mobile, it was Sony Ericsson, and I still remember the buzz that surrounded the Sony Ericsson T68i that came with a color display and Bluetooth connectivity, now was that novel or what? Well, here is a relic from the past as it still carries the Sony Ericsson name, although its appearance on eBay is definitely a pleasant one, being a Windows Phone prototype smartphone that ran on the Windows Phone platform.

Originally leaked in March a couple of years ago, it was captured on video as recently as June last year. The Sony Ericsson Jolie is a slider smartphone, where it underwent testing to see whether it is worthy enough to adopt the Windows Phone platform. There were only a few of these Jolie prototypes around, and one of them is now on eBay, featuring an early Windows Phone 7 build while sporting 16GB of internal memory and an 8-megapixel shooter. Right now, bids have yet to break the €200 mark, but with slightly more than a week to go for the auction, you might kiss goodbye to that price ceiling soon. [Auction Page]

Xperia extends its partnership with Box into 2013

Sony Ericsson has announced that the partnership between Xperia and Box has been extended for another year, lasting until the end of 2013. This comes after 2011′s year-end announcement of the initial partnership, which lasted one year and was scheduled to end of the 31st of this month. Now Xperia owners who sign up for Box by the end of next year will get 50GB of free lifetime storage space.

Box is a file sharing and cloud storage provider, that, like all other cloud storage providers, allows users to upload files and access them from any location and device with Internet access. Videos, music, documents, pictures, apps, data files, and anything else you can think of can be stored. The Box Android app is available from the Google Play Store.

Back during the initial partnership in 2011, Box’s CEO Aaron Levie had offered this statement. “As more people bring their personal devices in to work to take full advantage of mobile computing, it is essential that they never have to worry about storage limitations. By partnering with Sony Ericsson we are bringing the full power of Box®’s cloud content management and sharing to those users.”

The free 50GB of storage space is not available with the Xperia X10 mini, Xperia X10 mini pro, and any stone age Android device running pre-2.1 versions of the mobile operating system. According to the announcement, more details and a discussion with Box will be available via the Sony Mobile blog in the relatively near future. In the meantime, don’t forget to score your free Box cloud storage if you own an Xperia or receive one during the upcoming holidays.

Sony Mobile moving HQ to Tokyo, cutting 1,000 jobs in Sweden

Sony Mobile moving HQ to Tokyo, cutting 1,000 jobs in Sweden

Sony’s slow and painful transformation continues with a restructuring of its newly-minted mobile division. In October, it’s moving its headquarters from Lund, Sweden (presumably a holdover from its Ericsson days) to Tokyo — for deeper integration — and repurposing the duties of its facilities in Tokyo, Lund and Beijing. As part of the changes, Sony Mobile will slash 15 percent of its workforce, with 1,000 employees being let go by the end of March 2014, in a trend we’ve seen across the industry. Most of those affected are in Sweden, with 650 on-site staffers and up to 450 consultants being shown the door.

Sony Xperia NXT series now available unlocked in the USA

If you can’t get the carriers onboard with your new smartphones, why not just sell them unlocked directly to customers? That’s what Sony is hoping to do with the NXT series. The phones have been available in Europe for the past month or two and are just now hitting the United States. Sony will be offering the Sony Xperia S, Xperia P, and Xperia U fully unlocked in a range of different colors from Sony stores and at Newegg.

These are the exactly the same phones that Europeans have already played with, but the American pricing is new. If you fancy the current flagship model, the Xperia S, you’ll be paying $559.99 for the unlocked black or white version. The Xperia P, meanwhile, will set you back $479.99 with silver, red, and black options, and the Xperia U is the cheapest at $299.99, available in black and white.

Thinking about buying one and using it on T-Mobile? Unfortunately, you won’t have much luck. Sony lists the compatible HSPA bands for each model, with the Xperia S and Xperia P supporting 850/900/1900/2100, while the Xperia U only supports 850/1900/2100. If you still want to pick one of the NXT line for AT&T or one of its MVNOs, you hit up Sony’s online or retail stores, plus Newegg and “other online retailers.”

Sony to maintain Sony Ericsson logo for a while more?

We do know that Sony and Ericsson have already parted ways where their smartphone partnership is concerned since last year, with Sony Mobile going it solo since then. They have done pretty well for themselves, I say, and to date, their Sony Xperia range of smartphones are definitely worth looking into, and made for a more than decent Android-powered device. Word on the street has it that Sony might just retain the Sony Ericsson liquid energy logo for some time more, at least this is what TechRadar advises. They did talk to an unnamed Sony executive, where they claimed that it was important for consumers to be able to associate with both brands, namely Sony Mobile and Sony Ericsson for the moment.

Needless to say, it is confirmed that the liquid energy logo will be phased out at some unnamed point in the future, but this will happen only when the remaining Sony Ericsson handsets are no longer in circulation. I do say that the logo has some staying power, as it has been clearly ingrained in the minds and consciousness of many.
