Sony Plans To Overtake Mobile Rivals Without Focusing On China And The U.S.

Samsung and Apple stand firmly at the stop of the smartphone heap, and players like HTC and LG continue ride their way up the market share rankings. But what of Sony? You know, the Japanese stalwart that occupies a significantly strong (if not dominant) position when it comes to other sorts of consumer tech?

It’s still gunning for that vaunted number three spot behind the folks in Seoul and Cupertino, but it’s preparing to tighten its focus a bit. Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai confirmed to Reuters (among other news outlets) that the company will focus building its smartphone business in Europe and its native Japan before attempting to crack the massive Chinese and U.S. markets in earnest.

It may seem like a surprising concession — Sony is a globally-known brand after all — but it isn’t exactly a stranger to abandoning tough-to-crack market segments. Earlier this year Sony Xperia Product Manager Stephen Sneeden remarked to CNET that the company was considering getting out of the low-end Android smartphone racket entirely because thanks to some especially fierce competition. The (then-tentative) new plan? To focus squarely on pushing premium smartphones that are truly representative of Sony’s mobile vision.

Hirai also added that future expansion in the U.S. would start “gradually”, which is no surprise — that’s basically the tack Sony’s already been taking for the past few years. Sony was arguably more prominent in the U.S. mobile market before it very publicly split with joint venture partner Ericsson back in 2011. Since then, Sony Mobile has released only a handful of smartphones into the U.S. by via of carrier tie-ups — there was the Xperia X10 and Xperia ion on AT&T, the reasonably new Xperia Z on T-Mobile, and the immensely curious Xperia Play on Verizon. In fairness, Sony also sold its share of unlocked gadgets through its own online portal but I’d wager the domestic demand for pricey non-contract phones has never knocked Sony’s socks off.

Still, this whole thing does seem shrouded in question marks. Sony is surely waiting on the right time to push back into China and the U.S., but its more nimble, financially oblivious rivals aren’t going to sit idly by and wait for them to construct a viable expansion plan. There’s a very real chance that Sony will get out-innovated or out-marketed no matter when they decide to enter the fray, which is really a shame. From my perch, it looks like Sony is finally hitting its stride with smartphones — the Xperia Z was an awfully impressive piece of kit when it debuted, and more recent efforts like the Z1 prove that the company is willing and able to compete on specs with the best of them.

Sony Mobile’s Xperia ZL Wall At MWC 2013

Sony Mobile might not have introduced anything really groundbreaking or revolutionary at the recently concluded Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, that ended last month, but this does not mean that they did not have a booth worth drooling over at Catalonia. Those who were there at MWC in the flesh would definitely have taken notice of Sony Mobile’s stand there, where it featured a video mosaic wall that comprises of a 14 x 14 grid of Xperia ZL smartphones.

Of course, a simple mathematical calculation after that would result in a whopping total of 196 Xperia ZL smartphones, now how about that? We do wonder what kind of power those handsets run on, and I can just imagine all those wires snaking to perhaps a central power outlet that looks alien, as it does not make much sense to have 196 power outlets lying in a grid somewhere. This unique video wall that is made up of Xperia ZL handsets was the idea of a company known as Visionmill, who claimed that this is an unofficial world record. Well, we would definitely not want to claim otherwise, of course.

Sony Mobile 2013 Signature Power Button Could Be New Design Cue

sony xperia power Sony Mobile 2013 Signature Power Button Could Be New Design CueI don’t know about you, but I sure as heck did find the liquid energy logo of Sony Ericsson to be something worth more than just a passing glance, but unfortunately after Sony parted ways with Ericsson, resulting in Sony Mobile, the beloved liquid energy logo too, passed on into history. What do you think had been the “signature” of Sony Mobile phones since then? Well, the Xperia range do seem to be condensed versions of the Bravia TV somewhat, but Wikipedia states otherwise. Apparently, they mentioned that the “Sony Mobile Signature Power Button replaces Sony Ericsson Liquid Energy Logo as easy to identify design hallmark.”

Well, what do you think of the new signature power button above? It will definitely make its mark throughout the entire 2013 range of devices that fall under the Xperia name, including the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL and Xperia Tablet Z. Of course, anything from Wikipedia should not be taken as gospel truth, so we do hope to keep a keen eye out on all of Sony Mobile’s 2013 releases to see if this rings true until December 31st this year.

Sony’s Xperia Tablet Z announced: 1.5GHz quad-core, 10.1-inch 1,920 x 1,200 screen and 6.9mm thickness

Sony's Xperia Tablet Z announced 15GHz quadcore, 101inch 1,920 x 1,200 screen and 69mm thickness

Announced bright and early in Japan today is the Sony Xperia Tablet Z that we’ve been hearing about. As you’d expect, this 10.1-inch Android 4.1 tablet features the same design language as its smartphone counterpart, but it’s what’s inside that really sells this device: a Qualcomm 1.5GHz quad-core APQ8064 processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB storage, a 10.1-inch 1,920 x 1,200 screen (with Mobile Bravia Engine 2), an 8.1-megapixel Exmor R camera, NFC, LTE (MDM9215M radio), microSD expansion and Sony’s very own “S-Force” virtual surround sound technology. Amazingly, these are all packed tightly into a 6.9mm-thick, 495g-heavy body which not only takes a huge leap from the retiring Xperia Tablet S, but it also beats the Toshiba Excite 10 LE that was once the champion in both fields. That’s right, Sony now has the world’s thinnest and lightest 10-inch tablet! Oh, and did we mention that the Tablet Z is both waterproof and dustproof as well? We’ll update you guys once we get hold of info on pricing and availability.

Update: For those wondering, Blog of Mobile says this new tablet packs a 6,000mAh battery, which is actually a tad smaller than the Excite 10 LE’s 6,690mAh cell. Hopefully Sony’s power management will bring its tablet up to about the same mobility performance.
