So PlayStation Now works. Like really. Like what the heck are you sure there isn’t a PlayStation tucked away behind this TV and hidden somehow behind this Vita works. It’s incredible because it doesn’t feel incredible, if that makes any sense. You can play streaming games without any game console, and that’s pretty damn impressive.
It was in September last year when we first heard of Sony rolling out a PS3 model that carried a far more affordable price tag, as the internals have been changed, sporting 12GB of flash memory instead of a massive hard drive. That particular model was marketed exclusively in Europe and Hong Kong only, and there were no indications of it arriving in the US. Of course, that omission was no big deal, really, since 12GB of storage space is not going to do much for folks who happen to have spent the past few years building a relatively large games library.
It seems that Sony thinks the US is now ready for the Sony PS3 12GB model, despite what Sony Computer Entertainment America VP of marketing, handhelds and home consoles, John Koller, shared last time, “The smaller Flash drive isn’t coming to North America, and a lot of that reason is the digital consumer. We really want to make sure, out of the box, that there is an option for them to be able to download that content. That is really critical for us, very very important.” What you see above is a leaked image of an alleged 12GB PlayStation 3 found in a Kmart stockroom Stateside, with a “do not sell until” date that points to August 18th.

What is your first memory or experience with the God of War series? I don’t suppose it is a “love it or hate it” case with this kind of hack-and-slash title, and there is a visceral sense about it, too. Having said that, I did enjoy the game a whole lot, and my personal favorite is the one on the PSP – don’t ask me why, I am just rather partial to gaming on the mobile front more than using a home video game console. Having said that, fans of the God of War franchise will be pleased to hear that God of War: Ascension’s arrival at stores this coming March 12th will be commemorated with the introduction of a limited edition God of War: Ascension Legacy Bundle just in case you have not yet, for some strange reason or another, picked up a PS3 console after all these years.
If you happen to have $349 to spare, then you would be pleased to hear that this is how much the God of War: Ascension limited edition bundle will cost you. For starters, there will be a 500GB Garnet Red PlayStation 3 system packed inside, coupled with the whole God of War storyline that will include the new God of War: Ascension and of course, the God of War Saga (which comprises of all five of the previous games from the franchise). The good news does not end there as well though, as you will be on the receiving end of a 30-day PlayStation Plus trial membership.
The complete God of War game collection will definitely roll back the years for some of you fans out there, as you can relive your favorite series moments with the God of War Saga, which comprises of God of War, God of War II, God of War III, and God of War: Origins Collection, which consists of God of War: Chains of Olympus and God of War: Ghost of Sparta.

A few days ago, we heard of our neighbors living in the Great White North (that would be Canada just in case you were wondering) would be on the receiving end of the white colored PS3 from Sony, and it is comforting to know that folks living Stateside have not been overlooked. In fact, it has been announced that Sony will make available the Classic White PS3 Instant Game Collection Bundle in the US, where it will be accompanied by a 1-year membership to PlayStation Plus. This is definitely one of the more pleasant pieces of news to start off the relatively young year, don’t you think so?
At least this means that folks living in the US and Canada will be able to have access to the Sony PS3 in a color other than boring old black. When you throw in PlayStation Plus that has seen more than a 57% increase in memberships since June last year, you are more or less looking at the ultimate game bundle for just about any avid video game fan. In fact, last year saw PlayStation Plus members received over 50 free and 270 discounted PS3 games, in addition to over 90 add-ons for the PS3 and eight free PS Vita games. How’s that when it comes to value for your hard earned money, huh?
This Classic White PS3 Instant Game Collection Bundle will arrive in the US and Canada this coming January 27th, where it will cost you three Benjamins (that would be $299.99 if you want to be exact in your accounting). Inside the bundle, you will find the Classic White PS3 system that sports a 500GB hard disk drive inside, apart from the aforementioned one-year membership to PlayStation Plus. This gives you unlimited access to a regularly refreshed library of a dozen PS3 games alongside half a dozen games for the PS Vita, and not only that, new games will also be added each month.

Right from the beginning, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has already been a step ahead of its rival on the console front, the Sony PS3, where global sales numbers are concerned. Well, perhaps the tables have finally turned after half a dozen years thereabouts, as a new forecast report summarized by Games Industry International claimed that the Sony PS3 has finally overtaken the Xbox 360, taking the lead in units shipped at long last..
According to Games Industry International, a “market analysis” document by Lewis Ward of IDC (the International Data Corporation) called the Worldwide Video Game Entertainment Console Hardware and Packaged Software 2012-2016 Forecast showed a prediction of hardware as well as software sales over the coming quadrennium. As for December, 2012, it is said that “Sony’s PS3 managed to surpass the number of Xbox 360s shipped worldwide (about 77 million vs. 76 million), despite the PS3 launching a year later.”
Just which of the two consoles do you prefer to game on, assuming that you are a true blue console gamer at heart?

PlayStation Store redesign goes live in Australia, Europe and New Zealand with a rocky start
Posted in: Today's ChiliSony vowed a long (long, long) overdue PlayStation Store remake starting this week, and it delivered just that today with launches in Europe as well as Australia and New Zealand. As promised, the PS3 shop’s cleaner design scales more elegantly from standard to high definition, brings more intelligent searching and makes it easier to find everything related to a given game. We still wouldn’t be too eager to dive in just yet, as there’s been hiccups early on — the sheer amount of traffic has reportedly brought the new store to a crawl, on top of teething issues with adding funds and recognizing PlayStation Plus memberships. Sony has promised fixes, but we’re suddenly not feeling so bad about having to wait for that October 23rd North American launch.

PlayStation Store update hitting PAL regions on October 17th, North America on October 23rd
Posted in: Today's Chili If you feel the current design of the PlayStation Store leaves a lot to be desired, then you’ll probably be glad to hear it’s being totally revamped. A new UI should do a better job of pushing fresh content at you, and its appearance will be consistent regardless of whether you’re outputting in standard or high def. Searching has been improved to handle abbreviations and misspellings, and a dynamic list of suggestions will try to work out what you’re looking for as you type. Also, Vita and PSP content will be separated, new filters will be available and content hubs will offer everything linked to a certain title, à la the Xbox 360 Marketplace. Sound good? Well, there’s not long to wait – it’ll be launching in PAL regions (Europe, Asia,

There are plenty of gaming headsets, but only so many specifically tuned to the PlayStation audience that aren’t made by Sony itself. Mad Catz’ Tritton label has just shipped a version of its Kunai wired headset optimized for both the PS3 and the PS Vita that might redress that (admittedly minor) deficit. About the only real customization for Vita owners is the option for a shorter 3-foot cord, but PS3 owners can plug in through USB and adjust voice volume independently from the gunshots and explosions. Regardless of which game console the Kunai links to, there’s a modest 25Hz to 20KHz headphone frequency range and few frills aside from a detachable boom microphone. Tritton is mostly counting on the price to lure us in, which just might work — at $60, berating players in-game with a Kunai will cost as much as one of the games themselves.

We’re not sure if we should always cheer figures that reflect sedentary behavior. Still, chalk one up for greater (if superficial) gender equality. Nielsen finds that, as of this past March, men who owned a modern game console like the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 or Wii were using their TVs almost as much as women: while males in the broader population typically spend 37 fewer minutes in front of the big screen every day than females, that gap shrank to a negligible 11 minutes when console use came into play. Unfortunately, the agency doesn’t say just what’s getting men to tune in for that much longer. Gaming is the most likely culprit, but a raft of streaming video options could have some of those refined couch potatoes watching Hulu or Netflix instead of playing one more round of Gears of War. If consoles have people of all genders spending more time together, we’re in favor of it; given that men still spend over twice as much time on consoles as women, though, it’s clear there’s still a bridge to cross if we want more of a balance in the kinds of TV activity we enjoy.

Sony’s 2012 PlayStation torn down, shows its evolved roots (update: another teardown)
Posted in: Today's ChiliWe’ve looked intensely at the outside of the redesigned PlayStation 3 ever since it was unveiled in Tokyo last month. Getting a look inside has proven unusually tougher, but French YouTube member K0st3yr has volunteered to do what few gamers dare and tear down Sony’s updated console. As we’ve quickly learned, Sony hasn’t chosen to radically rework the insides like Microsoft did with the slim Xbox 360. The Cell processor and its RSX graphics companion are still separate parts, and a similar power supply capacity suggests that neither of the main chips has been built on a more efficient manufacturing process. Instead, it’s everything else that has been given the shuffle: a smaller Blu-ray drive and more clever overall construction appear to be the tickets to the 20 percent volume reduction compared to the last model. While the revealed internals might be disappointments to those who were hoping the PS3’s possible sendoff would involve more of a bang than a whimper, they do hint that Sony might have breathing room if it wants to advance the design any further. Just have some popcorn and a grasp of French on hand if you’d like to have a peek at the three-part video dissection found after the break.
Update: Not to be outdone, iFixit has conducted its own teardown. There aren’t any shockers in the mix beyond improved repairability, but you’ll find many of the components given their exact names as well as more explanations of what’s been changed to shrink the PS3 a second time.
