Seedio app networks iDevices into loudspeaker, blasts music far and wide

Yearning to break free from earbud-induced isolation and spring towards a music listening experience with a social slant? Seedio for iOS can help. Built by a team of six developers, the app networks local iDevices over WiFi and allows one user to stream music to others. Audio from iTunes or YouTube is queued up by the designated disc jockey, or “seeder,” and plays through each device’s speakers in unison to create a distributed, makeshift loudspeaker. If the situation calls for a quieter jam session, however, you can forgo the speakers and listen in with headphones instead. Up to 150 devices can connect through a single router, but four is the current limit when relying on an ad hoc network created by an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. Seedio isn’t the first of its kind to roam the wilds of the App Store, but its creators claim to have nailed syncing audio across gadgets. The app is free for a limited time, but will soon pick up a $2.99 price tag. For those content with merely tuning in and leaving the playlist duty to others, the app will remain free.

Aperion Audio Intimus 4T Summit touts uncompressed surround sound without the cords

Aperion Audio Intimus 4T Summit touts uncompressed 51channel audio without the cords

See that little box next to those huge speakers? That’s Aperion Audio’s ticket to what’s reportedly a no-compromise approach to wireless home theater. The Intimus 4T Summit Wireless is billed as the only system of its kind to transmit uncompressed 24-bit, 96KHz audio to its 5.1- or 7.1-channel speaker array without having to string wires across the living room. There’s no interference and no more than 5ms of lag, even when that wunderkind box is processing Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio. Aperion is still touting an easy setup that can create a sweet spot in awkward spaces. If you like the idea, the only real catches are the $2,999 and $3,499 prices for the respective 5.1- and 7.1-channel systems — although the outlay may be worthwhile to cut the clutter without sacrificing the finer details of Blu-ray movie soundtracks.

Tombox Speakers: The Upcycled Sound

There’s something about old speaker housings, especially from the 60s and 70s. They are usually thick, big things that have a great look with design appeal. These speakers made from discarded old speakers that have been upgraded with new components.

Each Tombox speaker is unique, and the built-in battery will last up to two weeks before it needs a recharge. It’s maker, Diefabrik hand-selects some nicely designed old loudspeakers as suitable candidates for each upgrade. The sound varies from Tombox to Tombox, but each of the ones I’ve seen looks pretty awesome.

The compact Tombox looks like a cool way of sharing your tunes, while the bigger Tombox+ looks like a decent speaker to have at home. Diefabrik list their available Tomboxes and Tomboxes+ on their site, and you can send them an email to get yours. Prices typically range from €190 to €420 (~$233 to $515 USD).

Croon Audio debuts The Original sound system

I must say, Croon Audio, an innovator of the Bluetooth home speaker systems has just announced their very first first speaker, where it is aptly known as “The Original” sound system. Not too innovative at all when you think about it, but I guess sometimes something this simple will suffice. Croon Audio claims that The Original sound system boasts of an easy-to-use, one-touch pairing procedure, and it is also extremely easy to connect to Bluetooth devices in an easier manner than ever before. At the very same time, it also paves the way for unmatched wireless sound performance and design.

Through the merging of modern electronics with wood craftsmanship of the highest degree, this particularly compact speaker that measures 10.5”x 8” x 3.5” will be able to forge a seamless balance between contemporary and traditional styles, and this alone will amp up the volume of both style and music sans the clutter of wires. The speaker’s housing is made out of 8mm MDF (Medium-Density fiberboard), where it was specially made out of manufactured wood. This would ensure that VLD (Very Low Distortion) technology will come into play, especially when you listen to music at a high volume.

The Original’s speaker will also come with a couple of 2.5” forward facing Full Range Drivers, where they have been matched to an acoustic amplifier so that 15 watts per channel as well as a clear sounding Class D amp. Thanks to strategically placed isolation cones in a tripod pattern that are located at the bottom corners of the sound system, it will reduce the vibration frequencies while delivering the most stable supporting structure, never mind the kind of surface on which it rests upon.

The Original is capable of reproducing music sans wires from virtually any device that has Bluetooth connectivity, in addition to the 3.5mm connection, turning this into a premium external speaker system for the iPad, Kindle, a notebook, and an electric guitar amongst others. To make sure that The Original complements the company’s sleek, button-less design, users will be able to control the speaker’s functionality thanks to their connected touch screen device.

The Original speaker will feature a stereo Hi-Fi amplifier with integrated Stereo Bluetooth Receiver, and will come in Original Black, White on White, Agent Grey and Lady in Red colors. Depending on your color options, pricing begins from $199.99 and goes all the way to $234.99.

Croon Audio’s Original Bluetooth speakers promise not to creak while they’re cranked

Croon Audio's Original Bluetooth speakers promise not to creak while they're cranked

Odds are that we’ve all had a speaker system which can’t take the heat: turn up the volume and there’s an unintentional dubstep remix as the waaahs and wubwubs of distortion and vibration overtake whatever we actually meant to hear. Croon Audio is only just getting into speakers, but its Original system makes clean sound the order of the day: along with the retro, anti-distortion fiberboard design, the Bluetooth audio box has isolation cones at the corners that Croon hopes will leave any shake, rattle and rolling to Big Joe Turner and Bill Haley. That’s good news for a small enclosure with two 15W drivers and a Class D amp inside. A 3.5mm jack still exists if wireless audio compression gets on the nerves as well. The speakers are already selling now in a classic black for $200, although $230 will net a slightly livelier gray or white, and $235 lands an attention-getting (if limited edition) red.

Edifier Spinnaker speaker system is their new flagship

Edifier has announced a spanking new flagship speaker system, calling it the Spinnaker. One look at it, and I more or less have the theme song of Jaws running through my mind. How can you not experience that with the huge, fin-like resemblance? It is nice to see a company like Edifier slowly but surely building up their portfolio to what they are today, and with the latest addition to their wares, the Edifier Spinnaker will definitely evoke a sensory experience unlike any other – at least visually on the most basic of levels.

The Spinnaker is actually a CES Innovations Award winner, standing proud at 16.5” in height, sporting a very special shape that was specially designed to project the sound towards the listener, thanks to its front facing tweeters and mid-range drivers. These will be reinforced with a downward firing bass driver that is located in each speaker. The Spinnaker from Edifier will come with a Bluetooth connection built-in, ensuring that you will be able to live out a wireless lifestyle. Of course, going wireless is also a great idea in this day and age, as that would mean one less cable to worry about gathering dust, not to mention being a tripping hazard.

The Edifier Spinnaker will also be accompanied by a USB rechargeable wireless remote that is capable of controlling the volume, track navigation and play/pause preferences without a hitch as long as you remain within a 10-meter radius (that measures to 30 feet).

I would call the Spinnaker shape that of a shark’s fin, but I guess Edifier preferred the more diplomatic route by calling it a ‘sail inspired design’, and it is not there just for looks alone. In fact, the sail inspired design is said to be able to enhance the sound in a variety of ways. Thanks to a tapered cylindrical shape, the internal standing waves and resonances cannot collect to a measurable degree in any area within the enclosure, and will cancel themselves out at various frequencies.

Not only that, the aluminum frame is also paired with internal damping materials which will reduce unwanted enclosure vibration, giving the listener(s) a more lifelike and accurate sound presentation.

It might look expensive, but the Edifier Spinnaker is surprisingly affordable, coming in black and burgundy for $349.99 a pop.

Those who want to spruce up your pad will certainly be able to do well with the iHome iP76 LED color changing speaker tower. After all, it does come with Bluetooth connectivity so that there will be far less cables for you to worry about in your home.

The iP76 LED Color Changing Tower Bluetooth Stereo Speaker System is capable of turning any living room into a private disco alcove, thanks to its vibrant colors and streaming music from Bluetooth-enabled devices. It will be able to juice up power hungry iPhones and iPods when docked, and is also more than capable of sending video content from your device to your TV courtesy of its integrated component video outputs. The asking price for this puppy? $199.99. Too bad it isn’t even listed on the company page just yet.
