HTC 8XT with Windows Phone and BoomSound launching on Sprint this summer

BoomSound comes to Windows Phone with the HTC 8XT, coming to Sprint this summer

HTC’s bone-shaking BoomSound front facing speakers are making their way to Windows Phone later this year. The 8XT, which appears to be a slightly tweaked variant of last year’s 8S, will launch on Sprint’s 4G LTE network for $99.99 with a two-year contract — after a $50 rebate card. Powered by a 1.4 GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 processor paired up with 1GB of RAM, we want to say the 8XT has the same 4.3 inch 720p screen as its older cousin, but the spec sheet in our hands merely says “crisp”. The front of the phone has a 1.6-megapixel camera, while the rear has an 8-megapixel shooter. You’ll also have to make do with 8GB of memory for your music, but microSD expansion means you can easily make room for more.

Update: We can now confirm the 8XT has a 800 x 480 pixel resolution screen.

Sprint launching Samsung ATIV S Neo with unlimited LTE for $150 after rebate this summer

Image

There may not be too many mobile-focused surprises at Microsoft Build, as Sprint has just let slip its two biggest pieces of news. In addition to HTC’s 8XT, the company will carry Samsung’s latest Windows Phone 8 handset, the ATIV S Neo at some point in the near future. The ATIV S followup comes with a 4.8-inch HD display, a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM and a 2,000mAh battery, as well as unspecified WiFi, NFC and Bluetooth features. There’s no word about on-board storage, but the release specifically mentions a microSD card slot, so we’d assume you can add either 32 or 64GB more storage to the unit.

On the imaging front, there’s an 8-megapixel primary camera with an LED flash, as well as a 1.9-megapixel front-facing lens with “Manga Camera” and “Beauty Shot” apps to transform your selfies and smooth away those wrinkles. The phone will also have “international roaming,” meaning that owners won’t suffer the pain of traveling to CDMA-phobic parts of the world like Europe. Dan Hesse’s big Yellow Network isn’t talking about a release date beyond “summer,” but when this handset does make it to stores, it’ll set you back $149.99 with a two-year, unlimited LTE deal after the customary $50 mail-in rebate.

Motorola’s new smartphone leaked, reportedly being tested on Sprint 4G

Mystery Motorola smartphone appears for real, reportedly being tested on Sprint 4G

That long-teased Motorola X phone might be approaching an official release, if you believe what you’re staring at above. Phone Arena says it received the glare-heavy photo from a source that’s testing it for Sprint’s LTE network. We’ve already seen official FCC documents pointing to a Now Network future for the Motorola smartphone, while other filings tally with the shape of the device seen here. Aside from a first look at the device sans hardware-disguising casing, there’s nothing more to cement rumored specs, although it appears that it will arrive with a screen around the 4.5- to 4.7-inch region — a size that’s suddenly starting to look pretty middle-of-the-road.

Sprint Shareholders Approve Of SoftBank Merger

Majority of Sprint’s shareholders have voted in favor of a merger with SoftBank.

Sprint shareholders approve Softbank merger

Sprint and Softbank are officially approved to merge by Sprint shareholders, the companies announced this morning. According to Sprint, approximately 98 percent of shareholders at today’s meeting voted to approve the deal, which represents “approximately 80 percent of Sprint’s outstanding common stock” as of late April 2013. Of course, the United States Federal Communications Commission still needs to sign off, though the companies are expecting it to go through FCC approval unscathed by some point in July. The US Justice Department already gave the deal its thumbs up.

Shareholders are expected to receive approximately $7.65 per share (or an option to convert their current Sprint stock holdings to “New Sprint common stock”), part of a $16.64 billion pie. Softbank already owns a 70 percent stake in Sprint, which it purchased earlier this year for approximately $20.1 billion. Should this merger go through as it’s expected to next month, Softbank and Sprint will become one. It’s kind of like Voltron, but with fewer pieces and a lot more money.

Updated: This post originally noted that the merger still required approval by the US Federal Trade Commission, which is incorrect. We’ve updated the above post to reflect the correct information.

Walmart permanently drops iPhone 4S price to $39, iPhone 5 to $129

Walmart permanently drops iPhone 4S price to $39, iPhone 5 to $129

While brief sales on iPhones are relatively common, it’s rare to see permanent price drops outside of a hardware refresh cycle. Walmart is willing to give those cuts a shot, however. Visit the company’s stores from this point onward and you can pick up the 16GB iPhone 4S in its AT&T, Sprint or Verizon forms at $39 on contract, instead of $90. The 16GB iPhone 5 for those same networks is dropping to $129 from its usual $190; sorry, T-Mobile fans, you’re out of the loop for now. It’s not hard to understand Walmart’s sudden generosity — when the iPhone range is nearing its annual upgrade, the lower prices should keep current units moving.

RadioShack bundling $100 Google Play store credit with HTC One purchases

Loyal Engadget readers know that we don’t normally trouble ourselves with promotions, but this one is too wild to ignore. Until June 30th, RadioShack is offering the HTC One to AT&T and Sprint customers with an added bonus — a $100 credit for the Google Play store. Should you elect to sign up with Sprint, you’ll basically get away like a bandit since RadioShack has slashed the price of the handset to $79.99 for new activations — on two-year contracts, of course. After all is said and done, you would basically leave $20 richer than when you started (sort of). So, if you’ve been lusting after the HTC One but have held off on buying it, the universe might be trying to tell you something.

Sprint boosts Clearwire buyout offer to $5 per share, $14 billion valuation

We’re deep into a bona fide bidding war here — Sprint and Dish are both battling for an approximately 50-percent stake in Clearwire, and as of today, that former contestant’s bid makes it the new front runner. To catch you up, last month Dish offered $4.40 per share for Clearwire, following Sprint’s offer of $3.40 per share made way back in December. Now, the carrier has increased its bid to a whopping 5 bucks per share, which values Clearwire at just about $14 billion. (As you can probably imagine, CLWR’s trading price has jumped today to match that new target.) This comes just days after Sprint filed a lawsuit to prevent the other two parties from moving forward. Whether or not CLWR’s spectrum and other assets make it worth that sum is a different story, but Sprint clearly sees some solid value there.
