Sprint Samsung Galaxy S4 Receives First OTA Update

Sprint Samsung Galaxy S4 Receives First OTA UpdateWhen it comes to Samsung’s most recent flagship smartphone, just about everyone knows that the Samsung Galaxy S4 would be quite the best seller in most markets where it is sold. Sprint will be one of the major mobile carriers in the US to offer the Samsung Galaxy S4, where it is finally made available to the masses after an initial delay. Even better news is, all Samsung Galaxy S4 consumers on Sprint will be on the receiving end of its first OTA update as of today.

It is safe to say that you do not really need that much power left in your Galaxy S4 in order to download this over the air (OTA) update that weighs in at approximately 24MB in size, while bumping up the software version to build L720VPUAMDL. It is rather unfortunate that there is no changelog available for this particular update, so it is safe to assume that this particular update is a last minute patch for the smartphone’s software. Just in case you missed the notification of the software update on your Galaxy S4, you can always attempt a manual update by going to Settings > More > System Update.

Intel CEO Supports Softbank’s Bid To Acquire Sprint

Intel CEO Supports Softbanks Bid To Acquire SprintWe’re sure you guys might have heard that Japanese carrier, Softbank, is looking to acquire a majority stake in one of the major US carriers, Sprint. At the same time it seems that American company, Dish, could be interested as well and seems to be thinking about making a counter-offer of their own. Dish even goes as far as saying that their acquisition of Sprint could be better for national security. In any case it would seem that Softbank might have stumbled across a hurdle, but at the same time it looks like the Japanese carrier may have found themselves an ally in the form of Intel’s CEO, Paul Otellini, who in an email sent to FCC chairman, claims that he supports Softbank.

According to the email, Otellini was quoted as saying, “Son-san’s vision to build a high speed competitive third national network is very compelling […] We need this competition in the wireless space as the ATT / Verizon model is not giving that to consumers at this time.” We’re not sure if Otellini’s message of support will play a role in helping the regulatory bodies decide if this acquisition should be allowed to happen, so we guess we will just have to wait and see.

Softbank founder goes on the attack, sees ‘no need’ to improve offer for Sprint network

Despite bidding competition from Dish, Softbank’s founder, Masayoshi Son, has told Reuters that he sees no need to adjust his company’s offer for Sprint. In fact, he’s even seen support from Intel CEO Paul Otellini, who stated in a letter to the FCC last week that a third competitive national carrier is “very compelling.”

During the company’s financial results today, Softbank’s Son went on the attack, spending a big chunk of the presentation pitching what his company would offer over its rival’s bid. He kicked off by saying that Dish’s offer (and comparisons) was “illusory” and how the Japanese carrier’s offer had a 21 percent premium over its rival’s, along with a swifter turnaround: two months compared to a year. Son also said that his company’s offer would sidestep the difficulties in combining spectrum in the US, as Softbank doesn’t currently hold any US wireless spectrum at the moment. The CEO added: “If our deal doesn’t go through with Sprint… the carrier won’t have the cash to follow through with their network vision [this year].”

Earlier in the earnings event, Son said that his company’s healthy native position was “just a stepping stone”, and that he’s now aiming for the number one spot in mobile internet globally — Sprint appears to be a big part of those plans.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 now available online at Sprint, in stores today at AT&T

Samsung Galaxy S 4 now available online at Sprint, instore today at AT&T

Samsung’s latest and greatest smartphone, the Galaxy S 4, is making a big move into the US today with an online arrival at Sprint and in-store availability at AT&T. If you’re a Now Network subscriber and happened to miss out on the carrier’s pre-order action, you might want to make some quick moves onto Sprint’s website in order to secure your new handset, which goes up for sale at midnight Central Time. In a not-so-cool move, however, only those porting their number to Sprint are eligible for the carrier’s $100 price break, which means all of you who’ve stuck through the dark days of EV-DO will need to pony up $249.99 for the Galaxy S 4. Meanwhile, if you’re aching to lay your hands on Samsung’s 1080p handset, you can finally get some gratification, as AT&T is now offering the smartphone for in-store purchase and play. Here, you’ll pay $199.99 for the handset, and while it’s potentially more expensive, at least AT&T’s pricing scheme doesn’t involve fine print shenanigans.

Editor’s Letter: The new consoles are coming

In each issue of Distro, editor-in-chief Tim Stevens publishes a wrap-up of the week in news.

Editor's Letter The new consoles are coming

This week I’m writing from a special place: from the perspective of a Google Glass owner. Well, to be honest I’m not wearing them this exact moment — I’m actually at 30,000 feet, making the most of a Gogo connection, and when your phone is in airplane mode there’s not much point in wearing the headset. Unless, of course, you’re looking for a conversation starter. In that role, the headset performs impeccably even when turned completely off.

It’s been an interesting couple days wearing the headset around, days I’ll continue to chronicle on the site because I know many of you are eager to know what Glass is like. I know this because I’ve had dozens of strangers come up to me and ask, “What’s it like?” Suffice to say, Glass is very interesting and the potential is compelling, but right now the thing is somewhat frustrating in its limited functionality. That’ll change real soon as more developers get to grips with the Mirror API.

HTC Windows Phone For Sprint Spotted In Logs, Could Be The HTC Tiara

HTC Windows Phone For Sprint Spotted In Logs, Could Be The HTC TiaraWe had earlier reported that digging around app logs by a Chinese developer had unearthed some potentially new Windows Phone devices in the pipeline, and now thanks to another look at these updated logs, the folks at WPDang have discovered a new HTC Windows Phone that could be headed towards Sprint! According to the server logs, this particular HTC model is referred to as the P0881. However with the HTC Tiara having yet to launch and with it primed for release on Sprint’s network, it is possible that this device could be the HTC Tiara, rather than another HTC Windows Phone handset. If this is the case, we guess there’s really not much to be excited about since the HTC Tiara is hardly the most powerful Windows Phone device available, but since Sprint customers seem to be lacking in choice when it comes to Windows Phone devices, we guess the HTC Tiara would be a welcome addition regardless.

Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 Gets Multi-View Update

Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 Gets Multi View UpdateIt was at the end of last year that we speculated the Samsung Galaxy S3 (which will soon be dethroned by its successor from the flagship position) might be on the receiving end of a Multi-View update, but that speculation came to nought – at least until now. For those who happen to own the Samsung Galaxy S3 with Sprint as your mobile carrier of choice, you might want to take note that an update has already been made available for your smartphone via OTA (Over The Air), and Multi-View would be one of the new features you will be able to enjoy after applying the update.

What does Multi-View bring to the picture? Well, this particular app would enable you to split the display on the Galaxy S3 in half, allowing two different apps to run simultaneously, making it a haven for multitaskers. Of course, it does help that the screen of the Galaxy S3 is generous, although larger phablets like the Galaxy Note 2 would benefit even more from Multi-View. Other features that arrive with this OTA update include Paper Artist, camera enhancements, and an improved ability to send bulk SMS messages.

NYC subway wireless goes live in 30 stations, Sprint and Verizon signing on soon (updated)

NYC subway wireless goes live in 30 stations, Sprint and Verizon signing on soon

Wireless access in New York City’s subway system has so far been limited, at best: two GSM carriers, one WiFi provider and six stations does not a full network make. Coverage is getting much wider, however, as Transit Wireless just flicked on access in 30 extra stations. While cellular service with this batch is still limited to AT&T and T-Mobile for now, it reaches a much wider swath of Manhattan that includes Times Square, Rockefeller Center and the Museum of Natural History. Those on CDMA carriers also won’t be left hanging for long — both Sprint and Verizon have nearly finished making deals to join the project, with Sprint aiming for service later this year. Although the deployment still leaves big holes in carrier support and geographic reach, it’s a big leap for travelers with an urge to stay online while underground.

Update: Verizon now tells us that it’s also aiming for service by the end of the year.

FreedomPop Announces Sprint-Friendly Hotspot For $40

FreedomPop Announces Sprint Friendly Hotspot For $40

FreedomPop recently set to upset the world of ISPs by offering free broadband Internet, which was a little too good to be true when we realized it would offer only 1GB of Internet service for free per month. It’s now setting its sights to the world of 4G Internet as they’re announcing their first hotspot.

FreedomPop’s Overdrive Pro is a $40 hotspot that features a dual-mode that allows it to use Sprint’s nationwide 3G network when WiMAX isn’t available and will allow its users to have 500MB of free wireless network access per month. For those data-hungry users who can’t get by on a measly 500MB of Internet service per month, FreedomPop offers a monthly 2GB plan for $20, which seems like a fair deal when you consider the first 500MB of a month will be completely free for you.

Customers who happen to already own a previous FreedomPop hotspot can upgrade to the Overdrive Pro by making a quick call to the company’s customer service. Considering this one will be able to connect to a wider range of wireless networks, we think it’s safe to say you should get to upgrading immediately.

Sprint Samsung Galaxy S4 Delayed; Pre-Orders Hope To Be Fulfilled On April 27

Sprint Samsung Galaxy S4 Delayed; Pre Orders Hope To Be Fulfilled On April 27

It looks like that guy who had a truck filled with Samsung Galaxy S4s that was supposed to drop off the devices over at T-Mobile was also in charge of getting those phones over to Sprint as they have just announced the Galaxy S4 is being delayed on their network as well.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 was expected to be made available on Sprint’s network starting April 27, but today, Spring says due to “unexpected inventory challenges from Samsung,” they’ll be slightly delayed with their full product launch. As a result of this delay, Sprint says they expect to make the Galaxy S4 available for purchase on their website as well as Telesales on Saturday, April 27, although its Sprint retail stores and “other channels” will be receiving their devices “as inventory becomes available.” (more…)
