Kyocera Rise officially announced for Sprint and Virgin Mobile

A couple of days ago we reported that thanks to a leaked document, it seems that Sprint could be announcing the Kyocera Rise for a release on the 19th of August. Well the good news is that if the Kyocera Rise was a handset you had your eye on, you will be pleased to learn that it has been confirmed for the 19th of August and will be priced at $19.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate. For those wondering what they will be getting for their money, expect to find a 3.5” HVGA 480×320 IPS LCD display, a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a 3.2MP rear-facing camera, a microSD card slot and will come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich preinstalled. As pictured above, the Kyocera Rise will also come with a slideout QWERTY keyboard which some of you guys might still prefer over an on-screen keyboard. It is also expected to come with other features, like Kyocera’s Eco Mode, Swype, Sprint ID and your usual carrier bloatware. For those not on Sprint, the Kyocera Rise will also be making its way onto Virgin Mobile on the 31st of August and will be priced at $99.

Editorial: Carriers, let customers choose their own phones

Editorial Carriers, let customers choose their own phones

Remember what the experience of shopping for a gadget was like at big-box stores years ago? Whatever your actual needs were, the store clerks would invariably steer you towards whatever they were getting a commission to sell, or whatever scratched their personal itch. Why would you even go to a store if you knew you would never get an honest answer? The problem was bad enough for Apple in the 1990s, when Macs were often relegated to a dark corner alongside the Ethernet cables, that the company started up its own retail chain. It didn’t get better for most of us until outlets like Best Buy backed off and sometimes made it a point to advertise commission-free staff. Today, while it’s tough to completely escape personal bias and the occasional exception to the rule, it’s more likely than not that a modern general electronics store will give you a decent shot at buying what you really want.

But just try buying a cellphone at a carrier store today.

Kyocera Rise coming to Sprint August 19th for $20, Virgin Mobile to follow on August 31st for $100

Kyocera Rise coming to Sprint August 19th for $20, Virgin Mobile to follow on August 31st

Kyocera announced the QWERTY-packing Rise at this year’s CTIA without mention of any carrier support. Regardless, we had a feeling it would eventually end up on Sprint, given the lengthy partnership the two companies have enjoyed — not to mention a few leaks. Indeed, we got official word this morning that the Kyocera Rise will be available on Sprint August 19th for $20 (after a $50 mail-in rebate and two-year commitment), with Virgin Mobile following up with a prepaid version on August 31st. The non-contract price? $100. That thirty-dollar difference makes for an incredibly tough sell when a contract is attached. For the forgetful Freds out there, the Rise features Android 4.0, a 3.5-inch HVGA display, 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 Snapdragon S2 processor, a 3.2MP camera and a 1,500mAh battery that claims 8.5 hours of talk time. Check out more details in the press release after the break.

Sprint now offering iPhone 4S on contract for $50

Assuming the rumors are to be believed, Apple’s next-gen iPhone is set for an announcement on the 12th of September, with the launch taking place on the 21st of September, which is why we can’t say we’re too surprised to learn that Sprint has lowered the price on the iPhone 4S. The carrier is now offering the iPhone 4S on a new two-year contract at $50, although you will need to pay $150 but you will in return receive a $100 AmEx pre-paid gift card.

Apple has also reportedly matched Sprint’s offer and will offer $100 store credit if you buy an iPhone 4S from their stores and sign up with a two-year contract with Sprint. This offer will run until the 26th of August so if you think that you’d rather save some money and get an iPhone 4S instead of the iPhone 5 (or whatever it will be called), perhaps this is an offer worth checking out. No word if other carriers are expected to launch a similar offer but for now it looks like Sprint is the only one.

Sprint To Launch The $199, Keyboard-Toting Motorola Photon Q On August 19

photonq4

You know what Sprint’s LTE handset line-up has been missing (aside from more network coverage outside of Texas)? Some variety! Nearly all of Sprint’s LTE devices are monolithic, all-touch slabs of plastic and glass — it wouldn’t hurt to mix things up a bit, and that’s exactly what the carrier did.

On the off chance that your thumbs still yearn to pound out text messages on a physical QWERTY keyboard, Sprint has just announced that the recently-revealed Photon Q will hit store shelves on August 19. The Droid 4 lookalike will set interested customers back $199 with two-year commitment, and the truly devoted can pre-order their units today.

Looking past the laser-cut keyboard, the Photon Q also features a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor (Sprint hasn’t specified which one), a 4.3-inch qHD ColorBoost LCD display, NFC support, plus an 8-megapixel camera on its rear end. To top it all off, the Photon Q appears to sport the same lightly-modified take on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich that pleasantly surprised me when it appeared on the Atrix HD.

Really, if it’s anything at all like the Atrix HD, then the Photon Q should be a real treat. I have to wonder how well the thing is going to sell though — the QWERTY keyboard is a distinct plus for certain users, but its price tag puts the Photon Q right alongside flagship devices like the Galaxy S III.

Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE up for pre-order, hitting Sprint August 19th for $200

Sprint subscribers aching to get their thumbs on some QWERTY keyboarding, LTE action won’t have to wait much longer. The carrier announced today that Motorola’s verbose Photon Q 4G LTE will be hitting the network on Sunday, August 19th, carrying a $200 price tag. The handset’s packing a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, Ice Cream Sandwich and an eight megapixel rear-facing camera. Interested parties can pre-order the Photon Q, et al. today. More information can be found in the press release after the break.

Kyocera Rise to launch on Sprint August 19 according to leaked image

If you’re a fan of Kyocera’s products, then the recently announced Kyocera Rise (alongside the Kyocera Hydro) might have gotten your attention. The good news is that according to the folks at TechnoBuffalo, they have managed to get their hands on what appears to be a Sprint document that revealed that the Kyocera Rise will be released on the carrier’s network come 19th August. This is coincidentally the same day that Sprint is rumored to launch the Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE as well, so we guess you will now have more phones to choose from. As far as its specs are concerned, the Kyocera Rise will sport a QWERTY keyboard, a 1GHz single-core processor with 512MB of RAM, a 3.2MP rear-facing camera, a 3.5 HVGA display, WiFi, GPS and will run on Android 4.0 ICS. Not the most powerful of phones compared to the Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE’s rumored specs, but given that it’s only $19.99 on a two-year contract, it will probably be an attractive buy for those shopping on a budget.

Sprint reportedly to offer free ZTE Optik tablet with any smartphone purchase

While tablets are starting to gain more use in today’s society, they aren’t exactly viewed as a necessity – yet. However if you’d like one but you don’t have the budget for a new smartphone and a new tablet at the same time, it seems that Sprint might have a solution for you. The carrier is now offering their customers a chance at owning the ZTE Optik tablet for free when they purchase a new smartphone. The only drawback is that you will be tied to two two-year contracts – one for the smartphone and the other for the tablet. If you’re fine with that then perhaps this might be a deal worth checking out.

In case you’re wondering what specs the ZTE Optik is offering, you can expect a 7” WXGA 1280×800 display, a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, a 5MP rear-facing camera, a 2MP front-facing camera and a 4,000mAh battery. It will also be running on Android 3.2 Honeycomb. It’s not the most amazing tablet but it might be considered a deal for some, especially since it is being offered for free (not taking your monthly contract fees into account). This deal has yet to be officially announced by Sprint but is expected to take place from the 12th of August to the 30th of September.

LG Eclipse (LS970) pops up in FCC docs, ready to prop up Sprint’s LTE network

LG Eclipse LS970 pops up in FCC docs, ready to prop up Sprint's LTE lineup

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire and by the looks of this latest FCC filing, LG’s LS970 is all but a lock for Sprint’s LTE lineup. Rumored to bow on that carrier as the Eclipse, the heavyweight handset, allegedly outfitted with a quad-core Krait processor, companion Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB RAM, has already been the subject of several leaks, leaving little of its spec load to the imagination. And now with the outing of these Commission docs, we can confirm that this uberphone does indeed pack 3G/4G radios tailored for the Hesse-led operator (CDMA 820 / 850 / 1900; LTE Band 25), as well as support for NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi a/b/g/n, GPS and SVLTE (simultaneous voice and data). While we can’t be exactly sure as to its actual screen size, that reported 4.67-inch figure does appear likely given its 5.2 x 2.8 inch (130.9 x 71.6mm) dimensions. That’s about all we were able to glean from the spate of included tests, but if you call Big Yellow your wireless home and are itching for a GS III alternative, this could be your next.

Dish Network rumored to have bought Clearwire’s $400 million debt in secret transaction

Dish Network rumored to have bought Clearwire's $400 million debt in secret transactionWe’re not in the habit of entering the dry world of corporate debt notes, but Sprint’s latest financial release might disguise a juicy bit of news. There’s a rumor in the business press that Dish Network might have bought around $400 million of Clearwire’s debt — helping relieve the pressure on Sprint, which has been keeping its subsidiary alive on handouts. Unsurprisingly, no-one’s commenting on the rumors, although Dish CEO Joseph Clayton did say he was open to a partnership (or acquisition) with Sprint / Clearwire late last year. If true, it could signal that it’s getting ready for a fight against AT&T — or maybe it just wanted to throw Dan Hesse a bone.
