Sprint’s Motorola Photon Q LTE is coming ‘very soon’ (update)

Sprint's Motorola Photon Q LTE is coming 'very soon' update

During Sprint’s earnings call, CEO Dan Hesse revealed that Motorola’s Photon Q, the company’s latest LTE “world phone” is coming “very soon.” The Photon Q is believed to be the Android 4.0-running QWERTY-slider you can see in the image above, but now that the company’s head has let the cat out of the bag, we expect more details to roll around very shortly.

Update: Sprint’s PR engine has kicked into gear, offering the deep dish on the new handset. It’s a super-specced edition of last year’s Photon 4G and will indeed offer a QWERTY-sliding experience on Ice Cream Sandwich. Beneath the 4.3-inch ColorBoost display you’ll find a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, an 8-megapixel camera and NFC as well as Motorola’s Smartactions application to help users extend battery life and anticipate your daily routines. Pricing and availability will be announced within the “next few weeks,” but given how excited Dan Hesse sounded, we can’t imagine we’ll be waiting too long.

Sprint’s iPhone gamble isn’t paying off as 2012 Q2 figures reveal $629 million operating loss

Sprints iPhone gamble isnt paying off as 2012 Q2 figures reveal $14 billion loss

Sprint’s second quarter figures have arrived, showing that the company’s billion-dollar gamble on the iPhone isn’t working right now. While it sold 1.5 million Apple-branded handsets in the three month period (40 percent to new and postpaid customers), it recorded an operating loss of $629 million and a colossal net loss of $1.4 billion — compared to an operating loss of $255 million and a net loss of $863 million in the first quarter. Operating revenues of $8.8 billion improved on those in the first quarter by a single percent — mostly due to higher service fees from its wireless offerings. It’s also grown its cash reserves, up from $128 million last quarter to $267 million today, and can point to 442,000 postpaid and 141,000 new prepaid subscribers pushing the company’s customer base up to 56 million nationwide — mentioning that 60 percent of former Nextel users chose to remain with Sprint during the enforced change.

The figures reveal that Sprint’s eating around $782 million due to the shutdown of the Nextel platform and a further $184 million to end leases on antenna sites for the moribund network. It’s also having to take a hit of $204 million due to its investment into infrastructure partner Clearwire. It’s affirmed its $1 billion lending facility, contingent upon purchasing gear from Ericsson to help build its LTE network, which it aims to have installed in 12,000 sites by the end of the year. Of course, that purchase was prompted by the collapse of Philip Falcone’s doomed LightSquared project, which caused the Now Network to lose $66 million in cash and its childhood innocence when it comes to trusting other people.

Update: Big Yellow also mentioned that it has no plans to adopt a shared data plan to follow AT&T and Verizon.

Shocker! Three’s unlimited data adopters use lots of 3G

Shocker! Three's unlimited data adopters use lots of 3G

Three, a UK mobile network provider specializing in unlimited data packages, has reported that its customers are talking full advantage of their plans. Specifically, the average monthly usage has more than doubled this summer (we use the term loosely) from 450MB to 1.1GB over the same period last year. Smartphone users are understandably the healthiest eaters, sucking down around 1.5GB per month. With the BBC continuing to expand its 3G offerings and an undoubted increase in tablet use, tethering and the like, we imagine these figures are far from their peak. With 4G on the horizon, will Three regret positioning itself as the great provider; or, like Sprint over in the US, will it stand its ground for the sake of an advantage?

Additional Samsung SPH-L300 photos leaked

About a week ago, we reported that the Samsung SPH-L300 was spotted at the FCC and if you recall, images of the device was leaked back in May. Well if you’re in the market for a mid-ranged Android device, the folks at Brief Mobile have managed to get their hands on more leaked photos of the handset, confirming that the device will be running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

For those wondering, the handset is also expected to be headed Sprint’s way, although no official announcement has been made yet (hopefully the FCC filing is an indication that an announcement is close at hand). As far as specs are concerned, would-be buyers can expect a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor under the hood, a 4” 800×480 WVGA Super AMOLED Plus display, a 5MP rear-facing camera,1 GB of RAM and we guess Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Pricing and release date have yet to be confirmed, but be sure to check back with us at a later date for more updates!

Samsung Galaxy Reverb for Sprint leaked

Last week, we told you about the leaked image of the Samsung Jasper that was posted on Twitter. Today, the same source has posted another image of a device that is dubbed as the Samsung Galaxy Reverb. Interestingly, the Galaxy Reverb that’s reportedly headed to Sprint looks slightly similar to the previously leaked Samsung Jasper for Verizon. According to the source, the purported Samsung Galaxy Reverb (SPH-M950) for Sprint will be running Android 4.0 a.k.a. Ice Cream Sandwich, and will sport a 4-inch WVGA display and a 1.4GHz single-core Qualcomm MSM8655 processor.

Other specs will include a 768 MB RAM, a 4GB ROM, a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, and a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera. Unfortunately, the availability and pricing has not been revealed by the source. Judging from the image above, it seems that we are looking at a low-end Android device that is headed for Sprint. The source also leaked images of the Kyocera Rise earlier today, as well as the LG Cayenne last week – both devices expected to debut on Sprint’s yellow network.

Samsung’s Galaxy Reverb details echo across the twittersphere

Samsungs Galaxy Reverb details echo across the twittersphere

If the now-deleted @evleaks is / was to be believed, Samsung is preparing a low-price handset for Sprint’s big yellow network. The pulled feed revealed that the Galaxy Reverb (SPH-M950) will pack a Snapdragon MSM8655, a 4-inch 800 x 480 WVGA display, 768MB RAM, 4GB on-board storage and Ice Cream Sandwich. Photography enthusiasts should know that there’s a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facer for those self-portrait moments. There’s no word on if it packs LTE, but given the limited quantity of Sprint markets that can currently use the standard, we wouldn’t get our hopes up just yet.

Kyocera Rise could be headed Sprint and Virgin Mobile’s way

Thanks to @evleaks (page has since been removed), it has been revealed that a phone dubbed the Kyocera Rise (pictured above) could be headed Sprint’s and Virgin Mobile’s way soon. No word on when we will be seeing the handset nor on how much it will cost, but given its specs it is safe to assume that if you wanted an Android 4.0 phone on the cheap, then perhaps the Kyocera Rise might be a phone worth taking a look at. If this sounds familiar, it is because the Kyocera Rise was announced officially a while back. In case you missed the news, the Kyocera Rise will sport a 3.5” HVGA display, a 1GHz single-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 2GB of internal storage, a 3.2MP rear-facing camera and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard for those who might favor physical keys over virtual ones. So, any takers?

Kyocera Rise linked to Sprint and Virgin Mobile in leak, clue vanishes in a hot minute

Kyocera Rise linked to Sprint and Virgin in phantom leak

Kyocera has already committed to launching the Hydro with Boost Mobile next month, but the Rise is still the bridesmaid, and not a bride — at least, not until a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it leak that emerged this weekend. A Twitter update by EV leaks has the Android 4.0 QWERTY slider attached to Sprint and Virgin Mobile, with a press photo of the Sprint version as evidence. Unfortunately, that’s about all we’ll get to see in the near future: the post and the whole account ceased to exist not long after they first appeared, which makes permanent proof a little hard to come by other than through an Unwired View recap. Still, we already know the Rise is destined for CDMA providers in the US, and Sprint’s longstanding partnership with Kyocera makes the Rise an obvious candidate as the carrier’s next on-the-cheap messaging device — the image may just give our hunches some meaning.

Sprint’s rumored LG LS860 ‘Cayenne’ shows up once more, reveals hint of ICS

Sprint's rumored LG LS860 'Cayenne' shows up once more, reveals hint of ICS

Well, look who decided to make a sudden appearance yet again. Not long after receiving a quick, unexpected visit from the legendary (and very crafty) Mr. Blurrycam, the purported Sprint-bound LG LS860 has decided it was time for another showing. This time around, though, the Cayenne’s a little more revealing than during its previous exhibition, flaunting its powered-on 4-inch, WVGA screen and what appears to be a flavor of Android 4.0 running on the background — this would allegedly be paired alongside a dual-core, 1.2GHz S4 CPU, which is a slight change from what we’d previously heard. As far as whether or not LG’s Cayenne will be involved in the next wave of LTE-enabled slabs headed to The Now Network — for that, our friends, we’ll have to wait to find out.
