FCC Fridays: July 20, 2012

FCC Fridays July 20, 2012

We here at Engadget tend to spend a lot of way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, be it on the net or directly on the ol’ Federal Communications Commission’s site. Since we couldn’t possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there individually, we’ve gathered up an exhaustive listing of every phone and / or tablet getting the stamp of approval over the last week. Enjoy!

LG Cayenne LS860 spotted in the wild again

LG CayenneRemember LG’s QWERTY-keyboard toting phone that was caught in the wild a couple of months ago, the LG Cayenne (LS860)? Well it looks like the phone has surfaced again. @evleaks (who brought us the Samsung Jasper images earlier today) managed to snap a photograph of the phone today, and was generous enough to share it with the world. While it’s nothing that we haven’t seen before, the photograph is of pretty decent quality (unlike the previous blurry cam pictures). The phone’s slide out keyboard isn’t shown here, but we can see that it is running Ice Cream Sandwich based on its notification bar and phone power options.

The LG Cayenne is headed for Sprint and is said to pack a Qualcomm MSM8960 processor,  4″ WVGA display, 1GB of RAM, a 5-megapixel rear camera, LTE connectivity and Android Ice Cream Sandwich. No word on when the phone will be launched, but a leak like this suggests that it shouldn’t be too far away. Anybody pumped about getting an Android device with a physical keyboard?

Virgin Mobile USA opening flagship Chicago store, selling ‘culture’ on top of phones

DNP Virgin Mobile USA opening flagship Chicago store, selling 'culture,' phones

Virgin Mobile USA is adding actual bricks and mortar to its primary selling channels — the internet and box stores — but said that a new flagship Chicago store will not just be about the phones. The location has been set up like a casual, music-themed lounge, where customers can recline while testing devices and salespeople will run workshops on subjects like apps and how to install them. The Sprint-owned company will add 14 more locations in the city by summer’s end and hopes to use the launch as an archetype for key stores in its other major market cities. The concept sounds a bit like a certain other starkly designed iChain — but the rock ‘n’ roll decor is pure Branson.

Sprint won’t charge extra for FaceTime over 3G

Sprint logoOver the past few days there has been some commotion over the possibility of carriers charging its customers for using FaceTime over 3G. AT&T was rumored to be implementing such a plan while Verizon claimed that it was too early to talk about it. However, one carrier has come forward to confirm that it won’t be doing such a thing when iOS 6 arrives. According to a Sprint spokeswoman, the carrier has no plans for charging any additional fees when using FaceTime over its mobile network.

With carriers not even batting an eyelid when consumers use other apps like Skype or Tango to make video calls with mobile data, it makes you wonder why FaceTime gets such special treatment. And if people are going to be charged additional fees for using it, they’ll probably turn to alternative apps instead. Sprint is definitely on the right track by not charging customers for how they use their data.

Samsung SPH-L300 arrives at the FCC

The folks over at the FCC have yet another device to play around with – the Samsung SPH-L300 would be the one frolicking with them this time around, having first appeared in mainstream consciousness sometime back in early May. Then, a User Agent Profile for the Samsung SPH-L300 was spotted on the Internet, where it revealed a fair number of its specifications. The FCC has since continued where the Samsung SPH-L300 left off in public since then, where the handset’s certification paperwork has been published, meaning the go ahead is given for a commercial release.

This does seem to be a mid-range device of sorts, offering decent hardware underneath the hood without having to, hopefully, break the bank. Among the core components include a WVGA display that will ensure this Android-powered device is decent enough to use, sporting a dual-core Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 SoC, 1GB RAM, and 4GB of internal memory. It will most likely head towards Sprint as the carrier of choice.

Sprint tacks on Buyback option to web, offers tradein credit while online shopping

Sprint’s Buyback program has been up and running for a bit, but now the wireless carrier is offering trade-ins alongside online purchases. While selecting your brand spanking new smartphone of choice, the outfit will automatically guide you through the process to determine how much your old handset is worth and keep track of the total credit for multiple devices — with a $300 maximum for the account credit. After the tech is tallied up, a pre-paid shipping label will be emailed out for shipping. Of course, the exact amount of the Buyback deal won’t be confirmed until Sprint receives your package and gives its contents the once over.

Lenovo IdeaPad U310 Ultrabook bundled on Sprint now

Ultrabooks have not really taken off in a big way that Intel and the rest of the Ultrabook industry insiders had wished, since it still pales in comparison when compared side by side with the MacBook Air in terms of amount sold, but it is certainly gaining some ground, although the progress is said to be slower than expected. Well, I do not think that the fault lies in the hardware, but rather, perception of folks. Those who are thinking of jumping aboard the Ultrabook bandwagon might want to check out the Lenovo IdeaPad U310 Ultrabook that is being made available over Sprint in an exclusive bundle, where it will come with MiFi or Overdrive Pro 3G/4G mobile hotspot alongside three months of free service.
