Motorola Photon Q wanders into the FCC with Sprint LTE

Motorola Photon Q wanders into the FCC with Sprint LTE

What’s that? A Motorola phone with Sprint LTE, EVDO and the model number XT897 getting approved by the FCC? Why, it looks like this could be the Photon Q LTE! We weren’t able to glean much in the way of detail save for the fact it packs NFC and LTE band 25 (Sprint’s 1900MHz flavor), but this is good news for Motorola fans disappointed in the dearth of new handset options over the last six months. Head to the link to get your fill of measurements and other fun numbers.

Mozilla says a slew of carriers and handset makers set to support Firefox OS

Sure it’s not as catchy as “Boot to Gecko,” but Mozilla’s newly-christened Firefox OS has already gained favor with a number of carriers, including Deutsche Telekom, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia, Telefónica and Telenor — as previously reported, Telefonica-owned Vivo is set to introduce the earliest handsets early next year in Brazil. On the manufacturing side of things, ZTE and TCL Communication Technology (Alcatel One Touch) have signed on to make phones based on the HTML5-powered mobile operating system. Firefox OS will be positioned as a low-priced, entry-level alternative to leading mobile operating systems.

Sprint gets Samsung Galaxy S3 on store shelves

Sprint has finally made available Samsung’s latest superphone, the Galaxy S3, on their store shelves. You will be able to pick up two flavors to suit your budget and needs – the 16GB and 32GB models can be yours for $199.99 and $249.99, respectively, where they will be accompanied by a new 2-year contract. Depending on your taste, you will be able to select from either Marble White or Pebble Blue shades. Of course, those who prefer to do their shopping online can always do so, or pick up a phone if you want to go through a telesales channel – otherwise, a brick and mortar outlet will also be able to fulfil your want for a new Galaxy S3.

Will you jive with Sprint’s version of the Galaxy S3? Perhaps, but those who want an exclusive red color have no choice but to stick to AT&T – who will not offer a 32GB model, but rather, limit it to just 16GB while making a marketing push for a 16GB microSD memory card for expansion purposes. I say that practicality and everyday use trumps color – what about you?

Virgin Mobile to carry iPhone from today, Sir Richard does his best Fonz impression

Virgin Mobile to carry iPhone from today, hopes you've heard of it

Virgin Mobile is offering the iPhone to its prepaid customers as of today. The Sprint-owned subsidiary is using the event to kickstart a new retail strategy that will see the company open branded retail stores in Chicago — with a nationwide rollout dependent upon its success. Since all carriers have to make a minimum commitment to Apple in order to receive the handset, it’s interesting to see that Virgin’s allocation forms part of Sprint’s $15.5 billion gamble on the handset that’s still yet to pay off. The handset will set users back $650 for a 16GB iPhone 4S, while plans begin at $30 for 300 voice minutes, unlimited messages and data, but only if they commit to automatic monthly payments.

Sprint launching 4G LTE in five cities this coming July 15

Sprint has just announced that it will be deploying 4G LTE in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City and San Antonio on the 15th of July. Sprint CEO Dan Hesse said that the new network will deliver faster data speeds with 4G LTE and an improved overall 3G experience. Today’s announcement is the start of Sprint’s aggressive expansion of its 3G and 4G network through its Network Vision program.

The new network scheduled to be deployed next month hopes that its customers in the aforementioned areas will experience better signal strength, fewer dropped/ blocked calls, faster data speeds, expanded coverage and better overall performance as the improvements roll out across the country.

Sprint expects to complete its 4G LTE nationwide network capable of serving 250 million people in the U.S. by the end of 2013. “The performance of both the 4G LTE and improved 3G networks are exceeding our expectations and we are pleased with the progress of the entire Network Vision program,” Sprint CEO Dan Hesse said.

Sprint Galaxy S III making its way to stores July 1st

Sprint Galaxy S III making its way to stores July 1st

We were originally expecting it to show up last week, but “overwhelming demand” prevented the Samsung Galaxy S III from arriving in Sprint stores for an unknown period of time. The Now Network has finally given us a firm launch date of July 1st, with the 16GB model hitting the brick-and-mortar shelves and both storage options (16 and 32GB) available online and through telesales. The 16GB version is going for $200, while the 32GB will be $250.

Boost Mobile takes BlackBerry Curve 9310 to the US, spices it up with $30 unlimited BBM, voice and text plan

Boost Mobile takes BlackBerry Curve 9310 to the US, spices it up with $30 unlimited BBM, voice and text plan

RIM gave the impression when it unveiled the BlackBerry Curve 9320 and 9220 that its lowest-cost Curves were doubtful prospects for the US. Thankfully, that’s been proven wrong by Boost Mobile, which just launched the 9320’s CDMA cousin, the Curve 9310. The message-manic BlackBerry comes to Sprint’s prepaid network with its BBM key intact as well as BlackBerry 7.1, a 3.2-megapixel camera and that all-important low price: at $100 contract-free, it’s one of the cheapest ways to leap into smartphones in the US. To top it off, Boost is throwing in a very tantalizing BBM Unlimited plan. The deal offers unlimited calling, text messaging and (naturally) BBM; although it starts at $45 per month, it gradually dips down to a very reasonable $30 per month if owners pay their bills properly for six months. Both the Curve 9310 and its companion plan will be available July 10th, giving us time to find the needed spare change under our couch cushions.

HTC EVO 3D receives Android 4.0 update in EMEA, Sprint’s update imminent?

Heads up HTC EVO 3D users, it looks like the Android 4.0 update for your phone has started to roll out. Unfortunately it appears that this rollout is only targeted at the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) regions, so if you’re living outside those regions, you’re probably out of luck at least for now. Oddly enough Sprint’s version of the update is still missing, despite being promised for a June release last time we checked. Perhaps the EMEA could get it first before Sprint does – after all there are a couple of days left before the month of June is over, so Sprint still has time to make good on the June release. That being said, if you can’t wait for the official release (if and when it ever heads stateside), there are alternatives such as this leaked Android 4.0 ROM, although it does require that the user have some knowledge when it comes to rooting and flashing their devices. Either that or you guys can wait patiently for the update, which we will be sure to inform you when it does arrive!
