AT&T, Verizon, Sprint To Offer Moto X For $0.01 On Cyber Monday

AT&T, Verizon, Sprint To Offer Moto X For $0.01 On Cyber MondayPlanning on picking up a Moto X handset for yourself? Well we heard that Motorola would be offering a $150 discount on its Moto X handset for those interested in purchasing the device outright as part of its Cyber Monday deals, meaning that its asking price has seen a drop to $349 from $499, and $399 from $549 for the developer edition. Well if you think that the price outright is a tad expensive for your tastes and would like to pay less, and by that we mean a lot less, it seems that AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint will be offering the handset for $0.01 come Cyber Monday, but this means that you would need to sign a new two-year contract with either of the carriers.

No word on how long this deal will last, but we can only assume that it will be applicable until the end of Cyber Monday. The deals are available via Amazon’s website (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint) and will only apply to the black or white model of the Moto X. This means that if you wanted to customize your device, such as get an engraving or get it in different colors via the Moto Maker website, you’d have to pay the regular price on contract which is currently at $99.99, but if you’re not too fussed, $0.01 seems like quite a steal! So, any takers?

    Engadget’s smartphone buyer’s guide: fall 2013

    Engadget's smartphone buyer's guide: fall 2013

As the leaves turn to gold and flutter from the trees, the Engadget team digs out their scarves and mittens to get ready for the mad rush of phone launches that take place ahead of the holiday season. We’ve seen big devices (both large and high-profile ones) enter the world over the last few months, including new heavyweights from Apple and Google. Then there’s Samsung, Nokia and HTC, which are all following the philosophy that bigger is better.

But it’s not just on the hardware side that things are getting exciting. T-Mobile’s eliminated roaming charges and Verizon is doubling its LTE speeds to a whopping 80 Mbps. AT&T is offering customers a $5 daily pass for internet and is making mobile share plans the standard rather than the exception. Of course, if you’d prefer unlimited data, Sprint is promising that its Spark LTE will beat the field — but it’s currently only available in NYC, LA, Chicago, Tampa and Miami. Whether you’re looking for a smartphone right now, or if you’re contract is about to expire, this is your guide to the best ones on the market.

Sprint Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 Update Is Finally Out

Sprint Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 Update Is Finally Out

After the botched initial release, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean has been slowly making its way to customers in the U.S. Earlier this month the update was rolled out for U.S. customers however Samsung quickly halted it after receiving reports from various users that the update was causing a number of problems. This past week the update started rolling out once again, gradually. Sprint Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 update is the latest to hit customers, who can now download it over-the-air.

The update ups core OS version to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, and along with it brings a number of improvements and enhancements. First and foremost, Sprint Galaxy S3 users can finally pair a Galaxy Gear smartwatch with their smartphone. Several “premium suite” features have also been added, such as Group Play version 2.5, preloaded Samsung Link, Multi-Windows experience from the Galaxy S4 and a few other features. The update brings compatibility for Samsung Knox enterprise security suite as well. Sprint Galaxy S3 Android 4.3 update is certainly an important one, its the first major update of its kind in seven months and users get to finally jump up from Android 4.1. Sprint is rolling out the update in stages, so you’ll have to be a little patient if the update notification hasn’t already been pushed to your Galaxy S3.

AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile Will Not Charge Customers For Spam SMS

AT&T, Sprint, T Mobile Will Not Charge Customers For Spam SMS

Receiving spam SMS is just a way of life as we’re sure many of you have inadvertently given your number out to a company, not realizing they’d be texting you on an hourly basis with special discounts you can receive if you reply to their offer. The annoying part of these spam SMS is the fact that they counted against your allowance of texts, that is, if you don’t already have an unlimited texting plan. Today, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint are making sure these kinds of texts don’t count against your monthly text allowance. (more…)

LG G Flex For Sprint Passes Through The FCC

LG G Flex For Sprint Passes Through The FCCUnlike the Samsung Galaxy Round, the LG G Flex is a tad more interesting due to its self-healing abilities, and last we heard, the handset will actually be making its way onto the major carriers as an official device, rather than a gray import. Well the good news is that if you’re a Sprint subscriber looking for your next phone, you might be interested to learn that the LG G Flex for Sprint has recently made its way through the FCC, corroborating earlier claims that the device would make its way onto their network.

The device model that was filed has the model number LG-LS995, with another model going by the model number LG-D959, although we’re not what the difference in models are. In any case the FCC filing includes three LTE bands for Sprint, but apart from that not much else is known, such as it availability or pricing. Neither of the major carriers have confirmed that they will be offering the handset upon its launch, but according to an earlier rumor by @evleaks, it has been suggested that it will. No word on when it will be released, but presumably we’re looking at the end of the year, or hopefully early 2014 where the device is still somewhat fresh and relevant in everyone’s minds. So, anyone planning on getting the LG G Flex?

US carriers no longer let premium text message services bill customers

    Facebook girl is mad!

Among the many surprise costs that annoy cellphone owners, unwanted text message service fees can be the worst; they’re hard to stop, and not always worth the effort. Those fees may not irk many US subscribers after today, though — AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile now stop “problematic” premium SMS services from billing their customers. Donations and those all-important talent show votes will still go through. Verizon isn’t part of today’s announcements, although the company’s General Counsel William Petersen tells us that Big Red is already “winding down” premium SMS services. There’s a good chance that these shady messagers will simply change tactics, but they’ll at least have a tougher time scamming phone owners.

Sprint To Offer Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini For $0 On Black Friday

Sprint To Offer Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini For $0 On Black FridayIf you’re looking for a smartphone which shares some of the guts as the Samsung Galaxy S4, but comes in a smaller package, then perhaps the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini could be the droid that you are looking for. Granted the specs aren’t as amazing compared to later models released by Samsung’s competitors, but if you’re on a budget, the good news is that Sprint will be offering up the handset for free come Black Friday’s weekend. Of course needless to say you would be required to sign a new two-year contract with the carrier, but if you were in the market for a new phone and plan to begin with, it does sound like a pretty good deal.

The deal is expected to start on Black Friday and will carry on until the 2nd of December and will be available via Sprint’s online store or physical retail outlets. For those who might have forgotten about the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini, this is more or less a shrunk down version of the Galaxy S4, although some of its specs are quite the same. The handset will feature a 4.3” qHD display and will pack a 1.7GHz dua-core chipset. It will be accompanied by 1.5GB of RAM, 8GB of onboard storage with microSD card support for memory expansion, a 1.9MP front-facing camera, an 8MP rear-facing camera, and will come with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean preinstalled.

LG G Flex for Sprint reaches the FCC

LG G Flex for Sprint at the FCC

Americans pining after LG’s G Flex may not have to pick up the curvy smartphone from AT&T if and when it arrives stateside. A new FCC filing has revealed the LS995, a variant of the G Flex that’s likely destined for Sprint. In addition to sporting the same giant dimensions as the AT&T-friendly D959 model, the LS995 includes both CDMA as well as Sprint’s three native LTE bands (800MHz, 1,900MHz and 2,500MHz). It’s still not clear just when LG might release the G Flex in the US, but the rapid succession of FCC approvals suggests that the company is gearing up for a launch in the near future.
