Starbucks now allowing Square Wallet payments

Starbucks, the popular Italian-style coffeehouse chain, has announced today that it will begin accepting mobile payments through Square’s Square Wallet in around 7,000 Starbucks stores. The “aromatic” announcement follows after Starbucks and Square decided to team up in August this year to create a payment solution. And after breaking the news in October that coffee addicts will be able to pay their coveted cup using Square Wallet, it’s finally launching the payment solution beginning today. Square Wallet will now allow customers to pay at Starbucks using their phone.

To to that, customers will have to download the Square Wallet app on their Android and iOS device to setup an account and debit or credit card for payments. Once done, users will only need to tap the “pay here” button and scan their QR code. “Square Wallet gives people an easy way to pay at Starbucks and neighborhood businesses,” said William Henderson, Square Wallet director. “ We’re excited to work with Starbucks to introduce a broad new group of people to the benefits of using Square.” If you’re on Android, you can the app here. iOS users, on the other hand, can download the application here.

Starbucks begins offering Square Wallet purchases from today

While you probably won’t be able to get Jack Dorsey to buy you a grande spearmint green tea the next time you go for coffee (we should know, we’ve tried), you can at least use his payment service. Yes, today’s the day that Starbucks begins accepting Square Wallet purchases at 7,000 of its stores — just scan a QR code or NFC-tap your smartphone to make a payment. In 2013, you’ll also be given the ability to tip your barista, presumably assuming you can go through the awkwardness of pre-selecting how much you think their service is worth in front of them.

Square launches in Canada, streamlines payments on the world stage

Square launches in Canada, streamlines onthespot poutine payments

For all of Square’s fast growth, it’s been exclusively the domain of US shopkeeps; others had to scrounge for an alternative, if there was one at all. The payment pioneer clearly isn’t content to isolate itself or anyone else, as it’s making its international debut with support for Canada. Locals can immediately request the free Mobile Card Reader and swipe credit cards with an Android or iOS device at the same flat, 2.75 percent rate that more experimental American stores know very well. Complete equality isn’t available to Canucks just yet, as Square Wallet won’t be available until 2013, but the access remains a step forward for Canadian merchants that don’t want to be tied down to a terminal any more than their southern neighbors.

Square making Starbucks debut in November, will accept digital tips in 2013

Square making Starbucks debut in November

If you’re wondering when Starbucks is finally going to get around to rolling out Square, wonder no more. The company announced that starting in November customers will be able to pay for their no-fat soy mocha lattes using the platform founded by Jack Dorsey. Of course, being able to use Square Wallet at the nation’s largest coffee chain is a major milestone for the mobile payment scene as a whole, but loyal customers likely already have a Starbucks card and its associated app. Only problem with both Square and the Starbucks app is you still need to carry cash to tip your barista. Thankfully, at some point in 2013, the company will start accepting tips through its own app and Square Wallet. Which also means you’ll be out of convenient excuses for not tipping, you cheap bastard.

Starbucks customers can pay with Square Wallet in November 2012

If you are a frequent customer of the gourmet coffee chain Starbucks, then you might be interested to hear that you will be able to pay for your coffee using Square Wallet from November this year onwards. This would mean approximately 7,000 company-operated US stores that would embrace such new technology, but that is not all. It seems that Starbucks will also introduce digital tipping from next summer onwards, and baristas will definitely be thrilled to hear about this bit of news.

This particular partnership between Starbucks and Square Wallet looks set to boost the mobile payments industry, where Square will be behind the processing of all Starbucks’ credit and debit card payments from next month onwards. From November 2012, all Square users need to do is show Starbucks cashiers a barcode on their phones, where that code will then be scanned for payment. This is the next step for Starbucks who rolled out their own payment apps for mobile phones in January last year, which incidentally have already clocked up a cool 70 million mobile transactions.

Square Wallet—formerly Pay With Square; formerly Square Card Case; formerly something else probably—is a platform agnostic alternative to Google Wallet, Apple Passbook and, soon, Microsoft Wallet.
