Google launches Android game vending machines, puts first ones in Tokyo (naturally)

Google launches gaming app vending machines, places first ones in Tokyo naturally

In a country that has no shortage of vending machines, Google Japan has decided to join the fray. The company has announced three dedicated Google Play machines that will sell 18 different gaming titles which are a mix of free-to-play and paid-for titles. To use the machines, you’ll need a smartphone running Android 4.0 and NFC — and that’s about it. You rest the phone on the tray below the screen, and NFC pairing takes care of the rest. We put the machine to the test with our LG G2 on hand, and had no troubles choosing and downloading a free game through the machine. There’s a slick unified animation from the giant touchscreen (which looks almost identical to drinks machines elsewhere in the country) to your Android phone of choice when the download kicks in. Also, for trying out another Google app, you’ll get a ‘present’ which ‘drops’ down from the screen and into the vending tray once your download is complete.

Not an Android user? Don’t worry, because the vending machine will offer up a Nexus 4 for you to try out, although you do have to give it back, however. Several boiler-suited Google employees will man the machines when they’re switched on tomorrow in front of the Parco department store in Shibuya. For now, it looks to be a Japan-only promotion — but it’s another great excuse to hit up the country’s vending machines. %Gallery-slideshow99512%

Final Fantasy V rolls to Android, still $16

Final Fantasy V rolls to Android, still $16

Ardent old school Final Fantasy fans know: the mobile versions of classic FF games can be rather costly. Square Enix, the franchise’s publisher, is well aware of how much your nostalgia values the series, and Final Fantasy V is no different at $16. Perhaps you’ve already got the game on Super Nintendo and iOS, but needed another platform to try it out on? At very least, the mobile version has some fancy new graphics and a handful of added job types to help ease the pain of paying so, so much for a far from new game. Head below for a trailer of FFV for Android in action.

Final Fantasy IV hits Android (critical hit!) for $16

Final Fantasy IV hits Android critical hit! for $16

If there’s a way to prepare for Active Time Battling, you should probably get on it — Final Fantasy IV is now available on the Google Play Store. That said, you may want to grab a Phoenix Down before we tell you the price: an ice cold $15.99. At very least, it’s the same price carried by its iOS counterpart, and a good bit less expensive than various Sony and Nintendo portable versions. It’s also got the upgraded graphics and new localization enjoyed by iOS players — as far as we can tell, it’s identical to other mobile versions. Grab your nearest chocobo and head past the break to see a trailer of the game in action.

Square Enix’s Shinji Hashimoto announces … that he has a Final Fantasy PS4 announcement for E3

Square Enix's Shinji Hashimoto announces that he has a Final Fantasy PS4 announcement for E3

What a tease. Brand director Hashimoto-san, who’s worked on the likes of Kingdom Hearts, Chrono Trigger and a raft of Final Fantasy titles over the years, took to the stage. And what did he have to tell us? Could Square Enix be working on yet another Final Fantasy title for Sony’s new PlayStation 4? Well, yes. Naturally. But that was about it, adding that they are “preparing for development of a Final Fantasy title. Please be excited for E3 this year.” What’s another few months? Right?

Sony teases PlayStation 4 developer list, includes many of the majors (update: Blizzard and Bungie)

Sony teases PlayStation 4 developer list, includes many of the majors

Want to know just who’s developing for the PlayStation 4? Sony just gave is a very good peek: it’s promising worldwide support for the console, and quickly flashed just which companies that entails. The cursory look shows us many familiar heavyweights, such as 2K, Activision, Capcom, EA, Konami and Ubisoft. We’ve also spotted Rockstar, Square Enix and other names that most would have hoped for with the new PlayStation. Suffice it to say that Sony hasn’t had any problems attracting the support it needs for a decent early lineup, although we don’t know how many of these developers will have something ready for launch day.

Update: A few exist that aren’t (directly) mentioned in the graphic above: Blizzard is porting Diablo III to the PS4, and Bungie will put its future MMO-like shooter, Destiny, on the game machine.

Final Fantasy IV headed to iOS on December 20, Android version to follow in 2013

Final Fantasy IV headed to iOS on December 20, Android version to follow in 2013

That Nintendo DS re-make of Final Fantasy IV may add 3D graphics, a variety of bug fixes, and a fresh localization, but who wants to lug around their old Nintendo DS? Thankfully, it won’t be much longer before the same version of FFIV ends up on iOS, as spotted by the folks at gaming forum NeoGAF. The game arrives on the iOS App Store for both iPhone and iPad starting on December 20, and is headed to Android sometime next year. As of now, it’s only got a Japanese pricing of ¥1800 ($21.77), but we expect it’ll cost about $17.99 when it launches Stateside. In anticipation of the pending release, Square’s marking down prices of its other iOS FF games (which are usually priced absurdly high), so now’s a good time to snap them up on the cheap. If you’d like to take a gander at the first images of the iOS port, Japanese publication Gamer has a first-look.

Square Enix Coreonline offers top-tier games on the web for free — if you feed the ad meter

Hitman Blood Money

It’s not hard to see that offering high-quality games through the cloud has its pitfalls, not the least of which is getting customers to pay. Square Enix may have licked that last problem through its new Coreonline web gaming service. Players can still pony up for the full-priced games or even single levels if they want unfettered access, but the cleverness comes through Coreonline’s parking meter approach to ad-supported free play: the more ads you watch and the longer they run, the longer you’ll get to play without spending a single coin. As our colleagues at Joystiq found out, however, the current level of OS support is inconsistent. Windows gamers can use Chrome, Firefox or Internet Explorer to start playing, but their Mac-owning friends have to lean on Chrome for some games and can’t even consider running the marquee title, Hitman: Blood Money. Square Enix’s library of eligible games will start expanding in October; while there’s no guarantee the Final Fantasy series or many other dream games will make it to the roster, Coreonline’s approach might just be viable enough to spare us a few raids on the bargain bins.
