Hasta La Gadget!

In a country that has no shortage of vending machines, Google Japan has decided to join the fray. The company has announced three dedicated Google Play machines that will sell 18 different gaming titles which are a mix of free-to-play and paid-for titles. To use the machines, you’ll need a smartphone running Android 4.0 and NFC — and that’s about it. You rest the phone on the tray below the screen, and NFC pairing takes care of the rest. We put the machine to the test with our LG G2 on hand, and had no troubles choosing and downloading a free game through the machine. There’s a slick unified animation from the giant touchscreen (which looks almost identical to drinks machines elsewhere in the country) to your Android phone of choice when the download kicks in. Also, for trying out another Google app, you’ll get a ‘present’ which ‘drops’ down from the screen and into the vending tray once your download is complete.

Not an Android user? Don’t worry, because the vending machine will offer up a Nexus 4 for you to try out, although you do have to give it back, however. Several boiler-suited Google employees will man the machines when they’re switched on tomorrow in front of the Parco department store in Shibuya. For now, it looks to be a Japan-only promotion — but it’s another great excuse to hit up the country’s vending machines. %Gallery-slideshow99512%

Square Enix just announced that Deus Ex: The Fall will come to mobile devices later this summer. This is the first title of the Deus Ex series to be released on smartphones and tablets, and the initial installment will cost $6.99 (€5.99). The RPG is set in 2027, the same time frame as the console-based Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and it incorporates characters from James Swallows’ novel, Deus Ex: Icarus Effect. We don’t have a precise launch date just yet, but Square Enix will have the game on hand at E3 next week. Check out the trailer below the break.

What a tease. Brand director Hashimoto-san, who’s worked on the likes of Kingdom Hearts, Chrono Trigger and a raft of Final Fantasy titles over the years, took to the stage. And what did he have to tell us? Could Square Enix be working on yet another Final Fantasy title for Sony’s new PlayStation 4? Well, yes. Naturally. But that was about it, adding that they are “preparing for development of a Final Fantasy title. Please be excited for E3 this year.” What’s another few months? Right?

That Nintendo DS re-make of Final Fantasy IV may add 3D graphics, a variety of bug fixes, and a fresh localization, but who wants to lug around their old Nintendo DS? Thankfully, it won’t be much longer before the same version of FFIV ends up on iOS, as spotted by the folks at gaming forum NeoGAF. The game arrives on the iOS App Store for both iPhone and iPad starting on December 20, and is headed to Android sometime next year. As of now, it’s only got a Japanese pricing of ¥1800 ($21.77), but we expect it’ll cost about $17.99 when it launches Stateside. In anticipation of the pending release, Square’s marking down prices of its other iOS FF games (which are usually priced absurdly high), so now’s a good time to snap them up on the cheap. To mark 25 years of dungeon crawling (and soft-resetting), Square-Enix has packaged together all of its core Final Fantasy titles for this elaborate fan-baiting package. Alongside discs for Final Fantasies I through XIII, the games-maker has packaged a numbered presentation plaque — replete with new artwork from renowned character artist Yoshitaka Amano — alongside a two-disc soundtrack and commemorative DVD. The price of a limited-edition slice of Final Fantasy heritage? A total of 35,000 gil yen, (around $450) will net you the compilation, which lands on December 18th. Japan residents can hit the source for preorder details, while global enthusiasts can read up on the full title (and format) breakdown — there’s no news of an international release just yet.
