[CEATEC 2012] Toshiba renames its Satellite U925t in Japan as a Dynabook

Announced early September, the Satellite U925t, a Sony Vaio Duo like ultrabook powered by a Core i5 Ivy Bridge is now making its debut in Japan under the Dynabook series. While Toshiba did not gave any specific price and specification details on this Japanese version of the Satellite U925t is schedule to hit Japanese stores within a few month with identical specs as its North American cousin.

TDK breaks the Hard Drive density limit, could go on to develop supersized storage

While the old-fashioned hard drive isn’t as fast or slender as an SSD, it can still lord its greater capacities and cheaper price over its upstart rival. TDK thinks it’s extended the mediums lead in that area by tweaking the magnetic heads and recording medium of the hardware — increasing the areal density of a unit to 1.5 TB per square inch. It means that we could see 1TB platters arriving in 2.5-inch laptop drives and 2TB platters in desktop modules, meaning even your commuting machine can store all of your heftiest data with ease.

Modbook Pro to launch with SSD storage, up for preorder October 3rd

It wasn’t all that long ago that Modbook Inc‘s CEO, Andreas Haas, made the mac-in-tablet Modbook Pro official, now we’re learning that the super-slate will launch with high performance SSD storage. So, as you wield your MacBook Pro come tablet, you’ll be free from spinning disks. Great, but what impact will this have on capacity? Well, according to the firm, storage will start at 64GB as standard, with upgrades possible all the way up to a, not-unreasonable, 480GB. Pre-orders go live on October 3rd, along with the all important reveal on price. Regardless of cost, if that void between the iPad and full-fat Windows 8 slates had been irking you, here’s your answer.

LaCie Portable Thunderbolt SSD: Fasted Rugged HD Available?

Sure, Thunderbolt is fast, but there aren’t many devices that you can buy that work with it, leaving Apple fanboys crying in their closets. LaCie has released a new Thunderbolt-compatible portable drive, that uses a speedy solid-state drive for that extra special cherry on top. It also supports USB 3.0 for PC users.

The LaCie Rugged drive comes in three versions. The 120 GB SSD sells for $199(USD), the 256 GB SSD sells for $349 and there’s a 1 TB 5400 RPM drive for $249. The prices aren’t that bad, especially for SSDs. LaCie claims a top speed of 380 MB/s for the SSDs, which seems a bit dubious. Currently, the fastest USB 3.0 external SSD transfers at 195 MB/s. If the claims are accurate, then this will be a blindingly fast external drive.

The drive is MIL-compliant to handle shock and drops from up to about 4 feet, so it should be fine if you drop it off your desk or out of your backpack. Though a SSD might hold up to much more severe drops. Just don’t try dropping the hard disk based model out of an airplane any time soon.

The Best SSD: Corsair Neutron GTX 256GB vs. Samsung 840 Pro 256GB [Battlemodo]

The pace of development in the SSD world is staggeringly awesome, as each generation of SSD controllers has delivered substantial increases in performance and reliability, while at the same time we’ve seen flash prices drop like a stone. It’s a great time to be storing and accessing data, for sure, but we’ve also seen the market dominated by a trio of SSD controllers from SandForce, Marvell, and Indilinx, with different vendors applying their own tweaks to the drives’ firmware to differentiate them. Though these controllers are all pretty sweet, we were beyond stoked to see two brand-new drives from Samsung and Corsair arrive this month, both with all-new SSD controllers. Will either of them put a dent in the SandForce/Marvell juggernaut? More »

Toshiba Ships First MQ01ABDH Hybrid Series Drive

Toshiba is one of the biggest names in storage products, and it offers a wide range of internal storage devices and external storage devices. Toshiba has announced that it has started shipping its first Hybrid Drive MQ01ABDH series (PDF) storage devices. These new Hybrid Drives combine the performance of a SSD with the capacity and pricing of a traditional HDD.

Toshiba offers the drives with capacities of up to 1 TB, and the drives are 2.5-inch form factor with a 9.5 mm height. The new Hybrid Drives use SATA connectivity and have self-learning caching algorithms to learn the data access patterns of the user and optimize performance. These algorithms determine what data should be stored in the flash memory for quick access and what data should be stored on the traditional magnetic platters.

The hybrid drive is initially available in 1 TB and 750 GB capacities. Toshiba says the drives are sized for use in ultrathin and standard notebooks, gaming PCs, AIOs, and slim desktops. The hard drive portion of the Hybrid Drives spins at 5400 RPMs and has an average seek time of 12 ms.

On 1 TB and 750 GB capacity Hybrid Drives the amount of NAND Flash storage is 8 GB. Toshiba says that the design of the Hybrid Series storage devices will enable faster system boot times and faster data access. Pricing on the new drives is unannounced at this time.

MSI makes AMD-laden GX60 gaming laptop official with A10 heart, Radeon HD 7970M graphics

MSI launches GX60 allAMD gaming laptop with A10 processor, Radeon HD 7970M graphics

We can’t say that there’s a huge cross-section of buyers who want a gaming laptop but refuse to touch Intel components. Whatever the size, MSI likely has that group sewn up with the official unveiling of the GX60 following a stealth appearance at Computex. The 15.6-inch portable is built as showcase for AMD’s latest mobile technology: it revolves around a 2.3GHz, quad-core A10-4600M processor using the Piledriver architecture as well as a Radeon HD 7970M to feed its 1080p screen at full speed. Thankfully, the PC is more than just a marketing vehicle and carries some of the gamer-tuned parts that we’ve seen in other MSI rigs, such as dual SSDs in a RAID stripe, a low-lag Killer networking chipset and a heavy-duty SteelSeries keyboard. Buying a GX60 may prove to be the real obstacle — in keeping with most MSI introductions, there’s no mention of a price or ship date, and none of the usual suspects have it in stock as of this writing.
