OCZ’s new Vector SSD breaks cover at IDF, packs in-house developed Indilinx controller

OCZ's new Vector SSD breaks cover, packs wholly inhouse Indilinx controller

As we were wandering the floor today at IDF 2012, we happened upon an OCZ rep who pulled the company’s new 2.5-inch SATA 3 SSD out of his pocket and let us get our mitts on it. Called the Vector, it will replace the well-received Vertex 4 at the top of OCZ’s lineup. Like its predecessor, the Vertex packs an Indilinx controller, but this time it’s the Barefoot 3, which was developed totally in-house without any assistance from Marvell designs. You can expect to see 256GB and 512GB versions of the Vector hit the market in Q4, with other sizes possibly showing up after. Of course, IOPS, read/write speeds and pricing remain a mystery, but we can share the gallery of shots below.

Myriam Joire contributed to this report.

Western Digital builds 5mm-thick hybrid hard drive, Ultrabook makers sign on early

Western Digital builds 5mmthick hybrid hard drive, Ultrabook makers sign on early

Those 7mm-thick hard drives you’ve seen in some Ultrabooks are already looking a tad on the chunky side. Western Digital has started producing sample versions of a hybrid hard drive (you’re not yet looking at it here) that measures just 5mm (0.2in) tall, even as it crams in both flash and a 500GB main disk. If you think the slimmer drive is just the ticket for a best-of-all-worlds laptop that’s both fast and capacious, you’re not alone: Acer and ASUS have mentioned their collaboration in the same breath, which may be a strong clue as to where future Aspires and Zenbooks are going. The remaining question is when they arrive. Sampling isn’t the same as mass production, which could leave us with months to go before the 5mm drive lands in future extra-skinny PCs.

SanDisk announces 32GB ReadyCache for Windows: $55 at Amazon, keep your existing HDD

SanDisk announces 32GB ReadyCache for Windows 7: $55 at Amazon, keep your existing HDDSanDisk has built itself a decent reputation in the SSD game, and a cheap cache-only drive is a logical addition to its line. Unlike regular SSD or hybrid upgrades, you don’t have to transfer your system to the new drive — the 2.5-inch, 32GB add-on simply hooks up to a spare SATA III port alongside your spinning storage and then you run SanDisk’s ExpressCache software to do the rest. The program, which is currently Windows 7-only, monitors which files you access most frequently and then automatically caches them on the SSD, promising up to 12x faster application launches and also faster boot times compared to your HDD working on its lonesome. Importantly, the ReadyCache works with multiple hard drives too, rather than just boosting your primary drive — a feature that SanDisk claims gives it a one-up over most other caching solutions. The list price is $100 but Amazon has it up right now for $55.

Maingear Solo 21 receives a makeover, $899 allinone PC is now fully upgradable

Back in March, Maingear entered the world of the all-in-one PC with the utilitarian Solo 21. Even though the unit is now only five months old, it’s being replaced with a model that’s more attractive, more functional and that carries a lower price. We’re most excited that the redesigned Solo 21 is now fully upgradable — and yes, this includes the Mini-ITX motherboard itself. Available from $899 on up, the baseline configuration includes a 3.3GHz Intel Core i3 2125 CPU (Ivy Bridge), 4GB of RAM, 500GB of storage, a DVD burner, Bluetooth, WiFi and Windows 7 Home Premium. The Solo 21 also supports mSATA SSD storage and can also be outfitted with Blu-ray in place of the standard DVD configuration. You’ll also find it supports the VESA mount, should you decide to throw the PC on your wall. If you’d like to become a bit better acquainted with Maingear’s latest refresh, you’ll find the full PR after the break.

Kingston unveils new enterprise focused SSDNow E100 SSD

Kingston is a technology company that offers all sorts of computer hardware from power supplies and computer RAM to storage devices. Kingston’s line of SSD storage devices runs the gamut from consumer devices to enterprise storage aimed at corporate use. Kingston has announced a new SSD specifically aimed at enterprise customers called the E100 Enterprise SSD.

Enterprise SSDs tend to focus more on endurance and reliability than outright speed. Kingston promises that its new E100 SSD has 10x improvements in endurance and reliability compared to SSDs aimed at the consumer market. Kingston says that the SSD can also help reduce the physical footprint of enterprise storage because less SSDs are needed to handle the tasks of traditional hard drives.

Kingston says that it conducted a virtualized database performance test comparing its new SSD to the traditional hard drive. The storage company found that replacing an enterprise solution with a server and an external chassis containing 24 hard drives with only six internal SSDs increased total database performance by 91.8%. While the performance was significantly increased, power consumption was 51% less with SSDs than with the hard drives.

Kingston is shipping the new enterprise SSDNow E100 offerings immediately. The storage devices are available in capacities of 100 GB, 200 GB, and 400 GB and have a three-year warranty. Pricing is unannounced at this time.

[REVIEW] Shuttle XPC SZ77R5

Introduction
During this year’s Computex, one of the products that caught our eyes was this Shuttle XPC (model: SZ77R5). It is a fairly small machine so you tend to walk by very quickly, however we stopped to read the specifications sheet of this little black box claiming to be a fully-fledged gaming rig. First impression was quite obviously “yea, like this baby case will… “
After agreeing to test one of these XPC (eXtreme PC) models, we have to admit there is a lot more than meets the …
