Western Digital shows off upcoming WD Black hybrid drives, we goes eyeson

As devices get thinner and thinner, there’s no place in the world for chunky hard drives, and to that end Western Digital has been talking about bringing ultra-thin 5mm hybrid drive technology to the market. We just got a look at the new drives, which will be branded WD Black — two 2.5-inch models consisting of a 500GB, 5mm thick (or thin) unit with 24GB of NAND memory, along with a 1TB, 7mm drive that also has 24GB of NAND. A spokesperson said that NAND could eventually go up to 32GB. There’s no performance figures or pricing available yet, but WD has already started shipping copies of the new models to OEMs, and expects that they’ll land in the laps of consumers within the next 6 months. For a brief video tour of the new products, head after the break.

Mushkin Announces 960GB Chronos SSD

chronos dx Mushkin Announces 960GB Chronos SSDThe world of solid state drives (SSDs) continue to expand in terms of capacity and speed, and in the future, you will most probably find the classic hard drive being rendered obsolete – this is assuming that the price of flash memory will fall down to the level of hard drives, otherwise, there will always be the price vs performance issue to mull over. Mushkin intends to forge ahead with their latest 960GB Chronos solid-state drive that is tipped to ship from this month onwards.

You do not need a rocket scientist to tell you that a 960GB SSD is extremely rare in this day and age, and it will definitely cost you a bomb if you were to include it in your notebook. This is nearly double the storage capacity of a standard 2.5-inch form factor drive, and it will most probably target disk intensive applications like workstations and servers. The layperson is not going to fork out insane amounts of money for shaving off some seconds from their program loading sequence.

OCZ demos Vector SSD in even speedier PCI Express form for the pros

OCZ demos Vector SSD in even speedier PCI Express form for the pros

OCZ produced something of a surprise when its in-house Vector SSD stood well against more seasoned competition. It’s proud enough of that feat that it’s following up with demos of a PCI Express model for creative pros and others that may deal with exceptionally massive file transfers. The switch away from SATA isn’t just cosmetic, as PC Perspective saw: PCIe gives the Vector more bandwidth and raw actions per second, on top of boosting the peak storage and reducing lag. OCZ warns us that the demo unit is a prototype and doesn’t say when we might see a production model, though we’d venture that the usual PCIe storage price premium will be in effect.

Mushkin launches enterprise class SSDs

Mushkin is a company that has been offering computer hardware, specifically memory, for quite a while. The company is on hand at CES 2013 and has announced the launch of a new line of enterprise class SSD storage devices. The new line of solid-state drives is called the ProSpec series.

The SSD line uses the SandForce SF-2582 processor and is fitted with enterprise grade MLC flash NAND. The drives have a number of features designed specifically for the enterprise environment. The drives in the series use the SATA 3.0 6Gb/s interface and feature 128-bit AES encryption.

Mushkin promises random read and write performance of 80K and 42K IOPS respectively. The drives also promise sustained data transfer rates of 560 MB/s. The SSD series will be offered in capacities ranging from 100 GB up to 400 GB. The enterprise MLC flash NAND used inside the drives promises 10 times the write endurance level without file degradation compared to normal flash NAND.

Other features include TRIM support, SMART support, garbage collection, and wear leveling. The firmware is user upgradable and the drives are RoHS, FCC, and CE rated. Pricing and availability information for the line of SSDs is unknown at this time.

[CES 2013] Solid State Drives (SSDs) are becoming more common by the day, and it doesn’t look like the trend is going to stop. At CES 2013, SanDisk has announced the launch of two more SSDs: the Ultra Plus SSD and X110 SSD. While the latter is for OEMs to create new faster and slimmer devices, the Ultra Plus SSD is designed for consumers who want a high performance drive.

The Ultra Plus SSD delivers up to 530MB/sec sequential read and up to 445MB/sec sequential write speeds, so if you’re looking for a huge performance boost on your PC, you can’t go wrong with picking up one of these SATA 3.0 bad boys. The SanDisk Ultra Plus SSD is available now in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB capacities, and priced at $74.99, $109.99, and $219.99 respectively.

SanDisk releases Ultra Plus and X110 SSDs with speed on a budget

SanDisk is coming to CES with the aim of democratizing solid-state drives, and its new Ultra Plus (X110 for PC builders) just might do the trick. The 2.5-inch drive (not yet pictured here) musters 530MB/s peak read speeds and 445MB/s writes, like many higher-end SSDs, but promises to ditch some of the premium we commonly associate with that breakneck pace. The 64GB, 128GB and 256GB capacities on offer will cost just $75, $110 and $220 — low enough that we could see them easily slotting in as a fast boot drive or a full-fledged replacement in a laptop. Anyone looking for a quick storage pick-me-up should already find the Ultra Plus waiting at Amazon, Microcenter and Newegg.
