Lovefilm bringing Star Trek, other CBS shows to the UK and Germany

CBS may have teamed up with Netflix in the US to satisfy those of us with an Enterprising bent, but the company has taken a different tack in the UK and Germany. Instead, the firm has signed a deal with Lovefilm to bring CBS and Showtime-owned shows to Amazon’s streaming network. The press release promises that users will be able to watch classic Star Trek, Voyager, The Good Wife, Dexter and Californication instantly, although a brief check of the UK site reveals that you may need to wait a short while more before you can immerse yourself in the Delta quadrant / Hank Moody’s psyche.

Someone Needs to Make This 8-Bit Abrams Star Trek Video Game Right Now

There’s a very good chance that if you’re a fan of Star Trek, you’re also a fan of video games. And even if you didn’t grow up in a time when 8-bit graphics were mind-blowing, it’s still easy to love this condensed re-telling of J.J. Abram’s first Star Trek movie as told via the original NES.

Watch Christmas Lights Recreate Star Trek’s Beam Me Up Scotty Effect

Even non-Star Trek fans have dreamed about teleporting away to space by just saying Beam Me Up, Scotty. And though it’s unlikely to ever happen in our lifetimes (prove me wrong smart people!), the special effects maestro Shanks FX has cooked up a slick way to recreate the Star Trek teleportation effect with Christmas lights.

Vianney Halter’s Deep Space Tourbillon: Analog Time from Deep Space Nine!

I’m for any watch inspired by science-fiction, but you probably wouldn’t have guessed that this awesome tourbillon watch, which costs probably as much as your house got its inspiration from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

The Vianney Halter Deep Space Tourbillon watch took several years to design and build. Just like other tourbillon watches, the mechanism is quite elaborate and detailed. It has a spinning triple axis tourbillon that appears to float beneath a bulbous crystal dome, making it look like it’s floating in space.

The “Deep Space” tourbillon powers the arching hour and minute hands, which curve up from the side of its face.

The Deep Space Tourbillon watch sold for an astronomical $192,000(USD) to a collector in China.

Star Trek Klingon Disruptor

Star Trek fans, listen up! I know that Spock Day has already come and gone, but this does not mean you will do nothing but sit around and mope all day long! No sir, you might want to take your eyes off the Vulcan race and concentrate on the warring Klingons instead, and what better way to introduce the Klingon culture to the rest of the world than with the $59.99 Star Trek Klingon Disruptor?

Brandishing this about, you would be able to be a true blue Klingon. Of course, if you are going to attend a fancy costume party and decided to go as a Klingon, then carrying around this screen accurate, highly detailed Star Trek Klingon Disruptor is a surefire way of making everyone look at you with green eyes, considering how this is an officially licensed Star Trek prop replica. Your cosplay sessions will never be the same again, as there are only so many times you are able to wear that uniform before you tire of Prime Directive jokes. It will require a couple of AAA batteries to keep it going.

Homemade Soapbox Starship Enterprise: To Boldly Go on Grocery Runs

I’m not sure how this flew under the radar for so long, but for the premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness, Rob Wixey showed up in this awesome soapbox Starship Enterprise.

Rob built it in his backyard in two months time. Well, he had some help from three friends. Probably named Kirk, Spock and McCoy. He built it for the Red Bull Soapbox race that will take place at London’s Alexandra Palace on Sunday, July 14.

This thing is two meters long with steel framework welded to a bike that is cut in half with inverted handlebars. That makes steering easier. It was shaped with plywood and polystyrene and coated in fiberglass, then painted. I wish I had this in my driveway – I’d use it to go on some five-hour missions to explore strange new neighborhoods, to seek out new fast food restaurants and new coffee shops.

The Deep Space Tourbillon Is A One-Off, Handmade Watch That Will Take You To Infinity And Beyond

Vianney-Halter-Deep-Space-Tourbillon-10

As you may well know, the tourbillon is one of the hardest (and most expensive) complications to build and only the very rich and very obsessed can afford them. This watch, however, may be just the ticket if you’re a hardcore Trekkie and you just hit a liquidity event.

The Deep Space Tourbillon is made by Vianney Halter and is supposed to look like the Deep Space Nine station from Star Trek. The tourbillon – essentially a rotating balance wheel – is suspended between two gears in the movement and the whole thing has a very steampunk meets Spockpunk vibe. It has a large domed crystal and 46mm case. It is a triple axis toubillon, which makes it extra hard to make and quite unique.

Before you place your order, you should be aware that Halter’s work is often amazing in theory but difficult to build in practice. You should also note that this thing will cost $200,000 when complete and it appears that it has already sold to a buyer in Asia. As we know too well, fools and their money are soon parted and sci-fi fans with money are the most dangerous impulse buyers of all. Regardless, it’s a cool piece with a surprising pedigree and enough geek cred to convince me that Khan shot first.
