William Shatner fights alien Gorn in new Star Trek video game commercial

I’m a fan of Star Trek The Next Generation, but I’ve never really been a fan of the original Star Trek television series. I have always liked all of the big-screen Star Trek movies with the original crew. The original series was a bit too cheesy for me, but if you’re huge fan of Captain Kirk and crew you may remember an episode from 1967 called Arena.

In this episode, Captain Kirk battles a giant lizard race called the Gorn. A new commercial for the coming Star Trek: The Video Game launching on April 23 shows Shatner and Gorn trying to bury the hatchet while playing the new video game. The commercial for the game re-creates the classic television battle, this time in the living room.

Shatner and Gorn get into some sort of argument over the video game and then re-create almost blow for blow the fight from the 1967 episode. The new Star Trek video game has an updated version of the Gorn playing the key enemy against Captain Kirk and Spock. The highlights co-op play and has Kirk and Spock working together to solve a mysterious attack by the Gorn.

The story for the video game was written by Marianne Krawcyzk. The game follows Captain Kirk, Spock and the crew of the enterprise battle as they battle to save the universe. The video game will be available for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC and can be pre-ordered now.

Star Trek: Into Darkness Will Have a NASA Ad for Real-Life Starfleet

Star Trek is every thing we hope space travel can be someday. Maybe we could do without all the universe-threatening disasters, but we’re all hoping for a warp drive, or a tricorder, or a replicator. Until then, NASA is carrying the fire, and the 30-second NASA trailer that will play before Star Trek: Into Darkness aims to get you stoked about our current day, real-life Starfleet. More »

Quadcopter Fleet Forms Starfleet Insignia in London Sky

No, that is not a message sent from the future by James T. Kirk, warning us to treat the whales nicely. You’re looking at 30 lit quadcopter robots forming a Starfleet insignia in the night sky above London, just because they can.

I don’t care that it is a publicity stunt. This is a great use of robots. The promotional event for the new Trek movie coincided with Saturday night’s Earth Hour, which was meant to encourage people to take one hour and to conserve electricity.

It’s totally okay to use electricity to make robots form a Federation symbol while others save it. I’m cool with that. It was an amazing once in a lifetime geek event. I wish I could have seen this up close and personal, as I’m sure the video doesn’t do it justice.

30 Quadrotors Form a Star Trek Constellation In the London Skyline

It’s supposed to be an hour when everyone conserves energy by turning off the lights and other superfluous power drains. But apparently Paramount is still not up-to-speed on what Earth Hour is all about since over the weekend it celebrated the event by sending 30 quadrotor drones into the air, forming the Starfleet insignia to promote the upcoming release of Star Trek Into Darkness. Hulu making all Star Trek episodes free until April [UPDATE]

Apparently today is William Shatner’s birthday, and he turns 82. To celebrate, Hulu is making its entire Star Trek catalog free for everyone. Normally, only Hulu Plus subscribers would have access to all episodes, but now anyone can watch them without needing an account or having to pay up for a monthly subscription.

Shatner played the infamous Captain James T. Kirk in several Star Trek films and TV series, and while Shatner has become more of an odd character nowadays (now known as the “Priceline negotiator” in those weird hotel booking commercials), he’ll leave behind a legacy for Star Trek fans to remember forever.

Five Star Trek television series are available on Hulu, all of which will be free until the end of the month: Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Enterprise. All of these shows are available now to watch at no cost.

UPDATE: We’ve been informed that Star Trek: The Animated Series is missing out of the bunch, as well as “The Cage,” which is the pilot episode of Star Trek: The Original Series.

As an extension of the festivities, Star Trek will be conducting a poll to see which episodes they’ll feature on the Hulu home page, and they’ll also be holding a “Star Trek Madness” tournament, putting all of the major Star Trek characters up against each other to see who is the most popular Star Trek character of them all.

Star Trek Into Darkness International Trailer crash lands with details

If you’re all about the next Star Trek movie “Into Darkness”, you’ll be more than pumped up about the newest full trailer, stacked to the brim with no fewer explosions than you’ll need to blow your eardrums out. What we’re still not sure of is who this enemy of our friendly protagonists is. What we ARE sure of is the fact that, whether or not we’ve heard of this bad guy before, we’ll be flipping out over the awesome crash of first-generation Federation ship into the sea and up against the shore of what we’re pretty sure is London, England.

If you’re a fan of the original Star Trek television series, you’ll perhaps have been guessing at the idea that the antagonist for this film was going to be Khan. The man who launched a thousand memes. But consider this: we’re in a completely alternate timeline now – an alternate dimension, if you wish – where the Enterprise crew hasn’t necessarily even found the frozen crew of ultra-beings from whens Khan came.

Does that rule out the idea that Khan will make another appearance here in this film? Not necessarily. But it’s much more likely that the team behind this installment of the Star Trek franchise will opt for another brand new enemy to our best buddies Kirk, Spock, Uhura, and the rest. Here we’ll quite likely find that Benedict Cumberbatch – the actor you’re seeing acting quite mean in this and the other trailers – ends up being a brand new character altogether.

Fun Fact: you’ll also see Peter Weller standing up about 35 seconds into the trailer. That’s Robocop, just so you’re aware. He was also in several episodes of the television show Star Trek: Enterprise as a Terran supremacist – certainly not reprising that role here.

Star Trek Into Darkness International Trailer: Set Your Faces To Stunned

So far J.J. Abrams and the whole Star Trek Into Darkness marketing crew have done a great job at keeping Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch’s identity a secret. But the latest international trailer for the film reveals a few more clues that seem to point away from the popular “he’s KHAAAAAN!” theory. More »

Borg Yoda Tattoo: Futile, Resistance Is

Yes, the Borg is a hive mind entity. But even so, there must be some mastermind behind the hive mind. Who could have orchestrated the attack at Wolf 359? Who is powerful enough to lead the Borg? It can only be one being. Jedi Master Yoda.

Futile, Resistance is. This Star Wars/Star Trek tattoo mashup was inked by Tara Quinn from Texas. Strangely, Yoda doesn’t look all that happy about being part of the collective. They must have caught him by surprise and used his powers to coordinate the entire Borg collective and make them smarter.

Judge me by my tatt do you? I knew that the Borg must have had help.

Geeky Hand Towels: Cleanliness is Next to Geekiness

Etsy seller Elizabeth Dean’s hand towels are embroidered with icons from classic videogames and sci-fi franchises, including Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda and Doctor Who. They’re great for tidying up the occasional geekgasm. Actually I don’t know what that’s like and I don’t want to know.

Just look at that Kirby hand towel. How can anyone resist that face? Plus it probably gets bigger as it gets wetter. I’m sorry I meant it gets bigger as you use it. Dammit lets just look at the pictures!

The New Star Trek Into Darkness Trailer Kicks It Up to Warp Speed

We were able to make a pretty good guess as to the villain of Star Trek Into Darkness after the full-length trailer came out, and although this new teaser doesn’t seem to reveal any big secrets of its own, it’s damned awesome. This trailer’s been showing up attached to Oz: The Great and Powerful and gives us a near whiplash-inducing, full-speed tour through the upcoming movies awesome set-pieces. More »
