Uhura recounts her epic Star Trek talk with MLK Jr for Neil deGrasse Tyson

Today on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2013, actress Nichelle Nichols – better known as Uhura from Star Trek: the original series, spoke with space exploration evangelist Neil deGrasse Tyson about her one legendary encounter with MLK, Jr., himself. While some of you Star Trek factoid aficionados may already know, it’s important today of all days to understand the importance of not only what Uhura represented to the future of our society on her own, but what her one talk with Martin Luther King, Jr. meant for the world as well. Listen in and/or read what this chat was all about and keep the spirit alive with a drop on over to Netflix for some cool original series action (they’re all up!)

What Chief Communications Officer Lt. Uhura represented to the world back when Star Trek’s original television show was originally on the air was a strong, black, female presence on the bridge. The bridge being up front and center of the Enterprise, the spaceship around which the entire show centered. As StarTalkRadio host Niel deGrasse Tyson recounts:

“The original Star Trek series was created, as many of you know, by Gene Roddenberry and was groundbreaking on many fronts. For me the most important feature of that show was that the deck of the starship Enterprise was international. Lieutenant Uhura herself represented – again this is the future – the United States of Africa. Not only was she there but there was representation from Asia, from Europe, from the Americans, and even planet Vulcan – of course, in the guise of Spock.

The point is, if you were a science fiction fan of the day, and you viewed how authors and producers portrayed the future, it was a future that did not include people of color. A really frightening prospect if you happened to have been a person of color.

And now comes the series of Star Trek, and you see a woman who is dignified, who has poise, who is not somebody’s maid, and who is in fact an educated communications officer of the deck of the starship Enterprise. And is fourth in command, by the way. And your vision of the future can change overnight.” – Neil deGrasse Tyson

Speaking about her aspirations for being a stage actress and ultimately hitting Broadway with her skills as a dancer and a singer as well, Nichols made it clear that she originally planned to only be on the show for a short while. At the end of the first season, in fact, she handed in her resignation to Roddenberry, who tried to convince her that her part was “more than just a role” and with choice words such as “don’t you see what I’m trying to do here” he implored that she take the weekend to think about her decision.

The weekend in question, Nichols was a celebrity guest (that Saturday night) at an NAACP fundraiser in Beverly Hills, California. This was 1967, by the way, right after the first season of Star Trek had completed filming. Nichols recounts what happened after she’d been formally greeted by the crowd:

“Just as I’m getting seated and getting ready to turn to the other celebrities, one of the promoters walked up from behind and said ‘Miss Nichols, sorry to bother you’, I said ‘no problem’, and he said ‘well there’s someone who wants to meet you, and he says’s he’s your greatest fan.’ And I’m smiling and I say ‘of course’ and I’m getting up to turn and say ‘where is he?’ and he says ‘right over here.’ And I’m thinking it’s a Trekker, you know, maybe it’s a child, maybe a little man – someone that just wants to congratulate me.

And so, delighted, I turn, and I see this man across the room with this brilliant smile – which you didn’t often see on his face. And I remember thinking to myself ‘whoever this little Trekker is, they’re going to have to wait, because this is my leader’ – Dr. Martin Luther King walking towards me with a smile on his face. And I never met the man, you know, this like I’m starting to tremble.

And he walks to me with this smile, he says – and puts his hand on my shoulder and says, ‘Miss Nichols, I am your greatest fan.’ I thought – ‘what an incredible moment.’ I just, was flabbergasted. And he begins to speak about my role on television, and the power of Star Trek, and how important it is.

In the meantime, for the first time in my life, I had no words to say. I could speak anyway, I’m shaking in front of this man. And he is saying how important Star Trek is to the future. That this man who has written this, who has produced this, has seen the future – and we are there, because you are there.

He said “you have one of the most important roles. This is a first. It’s non-stereotypical, it’s brilliance, it’s beauty, and it’s intelligence. And you do it with warmth and grace.”

And I’m just standing there watching him and listening to him, and I’m thinking the only visions I’ve seen of this man, really, are nightly on the news with marching, and black people in the south, marching and demanding their rights to sit at a lunch counter. And having fire hoses turns on them, attack dogs turn on them, men, women, and children, and this man leading them and marching and the face of all this. Being arrested.

Every night I ever saw him I said, ‘they’re gonna kill him. It wont happen past this time.’ But it did, and so he became this power, of hope. And here I am playing this character – that I’m going to give up – and I said to him, ‘Dr. King thank you so much, I’m going to miss my co-stars’ – before I could say ‘because’, he said ‘what are you talking about?’ And I said, ‘I’ve just told Gene that I’m leaving the show after the first season. Because I’ve received’ – and he said ‘you cannot.’

My mouth just dropped, and he said, ‘you cannot leave. Do you understand, it has been heavenly ordained. This is God’s gift, and onus for you. You have changed the face of television. Forever. Because this is not a black role, it is not a female role – anyone can fill that role.’ He said, ‘it can be filled by a woman of any color, a man of any color, it can be filled by another Klingon or an alien.’ He said, ‘this is a unique role and a unique point in time that breathes the life of what we are marching for: equality.’ He says, ‘besides, you’re Chief Communications Officer, you’re fourth in command!’

I’m thinking, ‘nobody told me that.’ He knows Star Trek is built on the Air Force, on the rankings, so he knew the rank. And he said, ‘you have no idea the esteem that we hold for you.’ And I start shivering. And I’m just looking at him, and my mouth was quivering. And he said, ‘Nichelle, you have no idea the power of television. This man has shown us, in the 23rd century, this man has created a reality. And because it’s in the 23rd century and you are Chief Communications Officer – 4th in command on a starship on a 5 year mission going where no man or woman has gone before. It means that what we are doing today is just the beginning of where we’re going.’

‘You cannot leave,’ and then he smiles again, and says ‘besides, Star Trek is the only show that my wife Coretta and I allow our children to stay up late and watch. And Nichelle, I can’t go back and tell them this, because you are their hero.’” – Nichelle Nichols

Needless to say, Nichols went back to Roddenberry and asked to stay with the show. She recounted the words King had spoken to her to Roddenberry and, with tears rolling down his face, he said, “God bless Dr. Martin Luther King, someone realizes what I’m trying to achieve.”

Gingerbread Star Trek Communicator: Eat Me up, Scotty!

Scotty. One to beam up. And hurry up, I’m hungry. I don’t want to eat my communicator and end up stranded on this alien planet. Yep, this is a gingerbread version of a standard-issue Starfleet communicator from Star Trek.

gingerbread communicator

It comes from the author of Trek food blog Food Replicator. Indeed, there is a whole blog devoted to Star Trek food. Big surprise, nerds like nerd food. The gingerbread communicator actually sounds pretty easy to make if you want one for yourself. To make it, he cut out the pattern pieces on thick card paper and used them to cut out the cookie pieces. He then used royal icing for all the decorations and to glue the pieces together.

GingerBreadCommunicator

I especially like the detail on the speaker grill. It’s obviously delicious. Judging by William Shatner’s girth these days, I’m betting he ate a few of these in between takes.

BS Your Way Through Starfleet Paperwork With Riker Ipsum

The next time you’re filling out your logs after a long shift on the Enterprise and need to pad it out, just hop on over to Riker Ipsum, which generates random text based on quotes from William Riker. Of course Picard was always far more quotable, but the mundane musings of the first officer make for much better filler. More »

Worf Hoodie: Don’t Let Klingons Catch You Wearing One

Confession: I’m wary of sharing anything related to Star Trek because I barely know anything about the franchise. It’s a franchise right? Right. But I do know that I’d rather wear a Worf hoodie instead of a Chewbacca hoodie. Notice how those two sound like they were named after dogs? Notice how I changed the subject because I didn’t have anything else to say?

Oh I know! If Worf ever needs to go under cover or keep a low profile, he can wear this hoodie so he can blend in. The hood will hide the ridges on his head. Oh wait.

Star Trek Webcam

When it comes to two of the more successful space operas around, Star Trek and Star Wars have their set of fans, although the former does have more material to fall back upon since it has movies as well as a back catalogue of TV shows to fall upon, while Star Wars folklore consists of just half a dozen movies, some computer games and a number of novels. I am not going to take sides as to which is the better franchise, as each of them has their own merit, but one thing’s for sure – both of them are cash cows which have yet to be fully milked. Case in point, the £39.95 Star Trek Webcam, allowing you to communicate with aliens. Wait a minute, I meant, your friends, right in front of your computer.

Voice control for computers are not quite on the same level as that of the USS Enterprise just yet, so you will still have to do your fair share of button clicking and typing, but to have the USS Enterprise webcam hover above your computer screen is definitely a statement of intent, and it tells the rest of the world just which sci-fi series you prefer. The USS Enterprise Starship webcam is a plug and play USB device, and comes with an adjustable flex so that you can set it up easily, while the engine nacelles light up when plugged in with the deflector dish holding the focusable camera for that touch of realism.

Star Trek Into Darkness teaser released!

The official teaser for upcoming movie Star Trek Into Darkness has been released, helping build excitement for the second installment of the reboot due to hit theaters in May 2013. Seeing the return of director J.J. Abrams, along with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as Captain Kirk and Mr Spock, the movie also includes the addition of Benedict Cumberbatch – known for his role on UK Sherlock Holmes reboot Sherlock – as the gruff-voiced villain.

Exact details of the movie are still under wraps, but we do know it will feature some impressive audio. Abrams and his team have partnered with Dolby Atmos, though not every theater will be able to live up to the quality of the soundtrack; there’ll be a special list of qualifying locations released closer to the movie’s debut.

What does seem to have made it through – judging by the teaser, at least – are some Prometheus-esque siren wails. It’s not the only connection Star Trek Into Darkness has with the Ridley Scott movie, with Lost-alumni Damon Lindelof also having penned the new Abrams film.

According to the little we know so far, the movie sees the Enterprise crew return to Earth to find crisis has taken hold, with Starfleet in disarray and Kirk forced to lead a manhunt to catch the man responsible. Star Trek Into Darkness opens on May 17, 2013.

Star Trek Into Darkness international trailer:

Update: Looks like the Japanese trailer has a little extra to it (thanks Mike!); there’s a plot clue tucked in at the end which the international version doesn’t get:

New Star Trek Movie’s First Trailer Looks Terrific and Apocalyptically Dark

J.J. Abrams has released the trailer for the next Star Trek movie: Into the Darkness. Just watch it, because it’s awesome. Seriously. I mean, I’m sold just on the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch—of Sherlock Holmes fame—plays the bad guy. That’s enough for me, but this teaser makes me want it all now! More »

Wil Wheaton’s Doodled-on Wesley Crusher Card up for Auction

Wil Wheaton has a gnarly sense of humor. Maybe that’s something you sort of develop if you play a character that creators loved but audiences loathed on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Yes, folks, Wil Wheaton is the guy who played Ensign Wesley Crusher. He’s also a superstar among geeks.

Wil Wheaton CardHe also happens to have a big heart.

Wil was recently asked for an autograph by the friend of a friend who loved Star Trek. Wil happily obliged, but when he signed the card, he accidentally over-signed and left a huge black mark on his face. So he did what anyone would’ve done in the same situation: he doodled on a pair of sunglasses over his eyes.

Then to complete the whole thing, he added on a ‘Yeeaahh!’ on top to transform the sunglasses into the Sunglasses of Justice. Yeah, that’s all it takes.

Long story short, Wil’s friend forgot who the autograph was supposed to be for so he’s decided to put it up for auction instead – and all the proceeds go to charity. Bidding began at $1 but now it’s up over $1000, and the auction closes late tonight.

“Star Trek” Classroom Uses Multitouch Desks

Scientists and researchers around the world are always investigating better ways to help children learn important subjects like math and science. A group of researchers at Durham University has been working for the last three years on a project to design and develop the classroom of the future. The project is called SynergyNet and hopes to help children learn mathematics more efficiently.

star trek class

The location is referred to as the “Star Trek” classroom because it replaces individual desks with futuristic communal desks featuring a multitouch surface. All of those desks are linked to a main “smartboard” used by the teacher. The desks allow students to work collaboratively on solving problems in ways that traditional pen and paper are likely to limit.

According to the researchers working on the project they have found that 45% of students who use the high-tech classroom increased the number of unique mathematical expressions they created after using the system. In contrast, only 16% of students who used the traditional paper-based method increased the number of unique mathematical expressions they created.

The system has a way to go before it might show up in classrooms around the world. Some notable holdbacks at this point are the cost of the system and the complexity of maintaining it.

Klingon Bat’leth Necklace Perfect for Taking Down Tiny Romulans

The Klingon Bat’leth is a formidable weapon in the hands of a true warrior. It will slice and dice your enemies with honor. Now you can wear a miniature version on your neck.
batleth
I hear ya. If it can’t kill, why would I want that? Well, if you are in a fight and lose your Bat’leth and your opponent and you are rolling around on the ground in hand to hand combat, just rip this small version off your neck and take his eye out. Aside from that, you can give this small version to your action figure and let him disembowel some other figure.

Sadly it has already sold on Etsy, but if you ask its creator, Starbright Silver, maybe she can make you another one. It seems like it would come in pretty handy as a weapon of last resort.
