Star Trek fans rescue EnterpriseD bridge, plan to restore it to former glory

A trio of Star Trek: The Next Generation fans have rescued the junked remains of the Enterprise-D bridge from Paramount Pictures, with an eye to restoring it to its former glory. The fibre glass set was built for Star Trek: The Experience, after the original (wooden) set was unsurprisingly destroyed filming Star Trek: Generations. When the group knows how much the project will cost, they’ll go to Kickstarter to raise funds, with the hope of exhibiting the set to the public. If you feel you might well-up at the sight of your childhood heroes’ home lying in pieces in a parking lot, we advise you not to click on the gallery below, and instead kick in a couple of bucks when their appeal goes live.

Spock Dreams of Uhura In This Starfleet Uniform Bra (B-Cup Me up, Scotty!)

Every time I think that the guys over at SceeneShoes have run out of ideas for more geeky braziers, they come up with another. Previously, we had some Nintendo and Pokemon bras, followed by a TMNT bra, and then an Xbox 360 controller bra. Now, we’ve got a bra designed to look like a Starfleet uniform.

starfleet bra

While not as outwardly sexy slutty as those latex Trek uniforms, this Star Trek bra can actually be worn underneath other garments, and only revealed when you want to show off your goods to your Captain or First Officer. From the design, I’m assuming this is based on the uniforms from The Original Series. I suppose that’s a good thing, because with the newer uniforms, that would mean you’d have to touch your boob in order to activate your communicator. Awkward.

The (unofficial) Starfleet bra is available over on Etsy for $30 to $40(USD) depending on size, and is not (yet) available in red.

Trekkies to Restore Next Generation Bridge

Since there aren’t any Star Trek The Next Generation episodes or movies being made, Paramount wanted to trash the set. A group of Trekkies is not going to let that happen. They took the old tattered pieces they were chucking out and have decided going to restore the whole bridge. I say, Make it so!

Rusty Harrell, Brian Uiga and Huston Huddleston have teamed up to restore the set which was recovered back in late 2011. Paramount had made it durably using Fiberglas and it survived for nearly 5 years during filming of the show, but had been all but forgotten about.

The team wants to take what he has and restore it to the closest recreation of the set as possible, with the help of some Hollywood professionals, and then go one better. They want to open the bridge to the public for meetings, movie showings, fundraisers, tours, filming, whatever. The project will start looking for funding soon. We will keep you up to date if we hear more. In the mean time, you can read more about the project here.

Starship Enterprise RC Plane: Boldly Go Zip Around the Park

Here’s your chance to be the Picard, Kirk or Janeway of your own USS Enterprise. It’s not a high tech starship, just a small remote-controlled plane, but let’s face it: if you suddenly found yourself on the NCC-1701-D, you and everyone in your crew might as well be wearing red shirts.

The plane was designed by RC enthusiast Dennis aka SGTalon. It’s made from foam and a glued-on skin. Dennis sells kits with all the ship’s parts and skin, but you’ll have to supply the other parts such as the rods and motor, and of course put them all together. The video below is a review of the kit courtesy of YouTuber joehandsome99. You can skip to about 3:05 to see it fly:

You can order the USS Enterprise RC kit from SGTalon for $22-$87 (USD). Not a Trekkie? Dennis also sells Cylon Raider and Imperial Destroyer kits.

Star Trek Door Chime

You would have thought that living in the space age where we are able to travel to far away planets, galaxies even, and something as simple as a doorbell would not have been powered by a trio AA batteries. I guess that is the case with the £24.99 Star Trek Door Chime however, as it has proven that the aesthetics might prove it worthy of being part of the Star Fleet, but the technology itself has yet to catch up in this side of the galaxy (and time). You will not find yourself getting beamed up anytime soon, but at least you are able to access your “quarters” as well as the “vessels” of others while announcing your arrival through this officially licensed motion-sensitive door chime.

Modelled on the original ‘old-school’ Star Trek communicator panels, it is a snap to mount, and will come with a trio of distinctive sound effects – a push-button Communicator Whistle, Door Opening sound and a Red Alert alarm. I guess those who are not hardcore Star Trek fans would most probably give this puppy a miss, others might want to look into it further and consider a purchase.

Neuroscientist Invents Technology to Cure Blind Mice (and Maybe Humans)

A neuroscientist from New York named Dr. Sheila Nirenberg apparently has made a medical breakthrough that allowed her to restore sight to blind mice. Now these mice can see how they run thanks to the nonsurgical procedure. The procedure involves something akin to Geordi La Forge’s visor. The process that restored vision to the blinded mice has the potential of being effective in humans as well.

The technique the neuroscientist came up with uses glasses that are embedded with a tiny video camera and a computer chip. Nirenberg envisions a day when blind humans will be able to wear Star Trek style visors and see the world around them. She believes that the system could be ready to test on humans within two years.

According to the scientist, blindness is often caused by diseases that damage certain parts of the retina that detect light and the neural circuitry that attaches the retina to the brain. The technique bypasses the damaged cells and sends encoded information directly to the brain. The breakthrough came when she was able to decipher the code of neural pulses that a mouse’s brain is able to turn into an image. The treatment for blindness in the mice included the prosthetic glasses and an injected gene therapy to activate ganglion cells that were still alive inside the mouse’s eye. The scientist says she has already figured out how to use the same process with a monkey retina, which is very similar to the human retina.

Singleness is Futile with this Borg Cube Wedding Cake

If you absolutely have to join the collective of two and get married, you might as well go all out and have a wedding cake that features a starship battle over top of that fondant. Remind yourself that Wolf 359 is where the Borg battle took place, and don’t Wolf it down as fast as you can, 359.

This cake comes from Colorado based The Sugarplum Cake Shoppe. You have to admire the level of detail they put into this thing. It’s more a ongoing battle than a cake. And it even lights up.

Phew! Phew! Phew! Wait a minute. What the hell is a Ferengi ship doing on the side of that Borg cube? They wouldn’t last 2 seconds against the Borg. They’re probably using the battle as an excuse to steal some copper wire from the hive mind’s wiring system. The economy sucks for everyone.

You may now assimilate the bride!

Latex Star Trek Outfits Definitely Not Starfleet Regulation

Did that headline get your attention? Good. You have proved that you are a geek male with a pulse. Poison Candy Latex (on Facebook) has created a new line of pop culture latex clothing which will be launching at Montreal Comic Con 2012, which is from September 14 to 16, 2012.

Star Trek fans who are into latex, or just like sexy costumes will be all over this, like a Ferengi on gold-pressed Latinum.

They sent some images to the folks over at Geeks Are Sexy to let people know what to expect from this clothing line. So what can we expect? Pure sexiness and a skin-tight fit. I don’t see any mention of price, but I’m sure they will be pretty expensive, and they’ll look way better than anything Shatner or Nimoy ever wore.
