Star Wars: The Old Republic goes free-to-play on November 15

Earlier this year there were rumors that suggested that Star Wars: The Old Republic could be going free-to-play. This was later confirmed by EA who announced that the free-to-play option would be arriving this fall. Well the good news is that if you were looking to get your hands on the game but wanted to wait until F2P was launched, you’re in luck as BioWare has officially announced that come November 15th, Star Wars: The Old Republic will finally be F2P. The launch will be simultaneous so all players in all regions will be able to access it.

As for those who have been loyal paying customers, BioWare will be rewarding you guys with all the Complimentary Cartel Coins listed on the Cartel Coin Ledger page, plus a one-time bonus of 250 Complimentary Cartel Coins. The F2P version SWTOR is expected not to offer any limits and will basically play like normal, with all gamers being able to level to 50 and participate in the new Cartel Market. More information on SWTOR going F2P can be found on its website. So, who’s looking forward to SWTOR going F2P next week?

Razer gives away custom Star Warsthemed Blade, may turn friends Imperial Guard red with envy

Razer has been big on Star Wars gaming gear, but never quite like this. Enter a free contest and there’s a chance to win a completely unique Star Wars: The Old Republic version of Razer’s Blade gaming laptop. The winner sees the system’s normally black shell replaced with a matte, laser-etched aluminum gray and the green backlighting dropped in favor of a subtler yellow matched to the MMORPG logo. Anyone who brings out this portable at a bring-your-own-computer gaming party is inevitably going to be the center of attention, although we have a feeling some would almost prefer the second-place bundle of peripherals — at an estimated worth of $15,000, the Star Wars Blade might be too precious to carry for all but the most well-heeled of fans.

BioWare promises Star Wars: The Old Republic to get content update every six weeks

It was a while back that there were reports of BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic facing a decline in logins, suggesting that players might have gotten bored and tired of the MMO. If you are one of those players, or if you’re still hanging on and hoping that things will start to shape up, you might be interested to learn that BioWare will be taking a pretty aggressive approach as far as content is concerned and will be releasing major updates every six weeks. This was revealed by BioWare Austin’s general manager, Matt Bromberg, in an interview with AusGamers.

“We’re committed to: about every six weeks, doing a major update for the game […] which would be a new Warzone, a new Operation, a new Flashpoint, a new event — and to doing that on a really frequent cadence, every six weeks. So we’re going to stick to that.”

Will the move to free-to-play and the promise of content updates every month and a half be enough to convince players to come back, or to keep them playing? What do you guys think? SWTOR (ex) gamers out there, let us know in the comments below!

Star Wars: The Old Republic adds free-to-play option

Looks as though our rumors from last week were true, EA has decided add a free-to-play option for its popular MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic. This fall, they will add an option that will not require a $14.99 monthly fee. Starting August, they will cut the price by $14.95 which will also come with a free month of subscription.

Star Wars: The Old Republic allegedly in the process of adopting the free-to-play model, according to anonymous BioWare Austin employee

Back in June, we reported that according to Star Wars: The Old Republic’s lead designer, they were considering the free-to-play model. For those unfamiliar, the free-to-play model, as the name implies, lets gamers play the game for free without any subscription fees (unlike MMOs such as World of Warcraft). Instead developers make money by selling perks, items, gold and whatnot for cash. At the time of reporting, the developers were only considering the model and there was no indication that they would adopt it.

However according to reports, an anonymous BioWare Austin employee lashed out at Star Wars fans, blaming them for the game’s “failure”. The employee also went on to “confirm” that the game was in the process of converting to the free-to-play model, but due to layoffs, the team is currently shorthanded and are having difficulties managing the change. Safe to say anyone can claim to be an employee of a company online, and since there has been no official word just yet, we suggest taking this with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think? Is the free-to-play model an inevitable move for SWTOR?

Star Wars: the Old Republic to offer free trials

Bioware has just announced that they are now offering free trials for Star wars: the Old Republic. Beginning today, you can try the game with no limitations up to level 15 at no cost as long as you don’t already have an account.

You’ll be able to use any of the 8 character classes available as well as explore the Origin World and your character’s faction world. You can even participate in PVP war zones and play with friends through a flashpoint. This free trial isn’t much of a surprise as we previously heard that Bioware was considering different free-to-play models.
