Starbucks’ New Machine Is a Little Too Realistic

Face it, you go to Starbucks to feed your socially acceptable drug addiction. Starbucks is the dealer, and you’re jonesin’. Being surrounded by conspicuous writers writing conspicuously, other impatient addicts, and baristas who didn’t quite hear your name correctly is just a bonus. And SNL imagines a world where you can bring that last part of that bonus home with a sass-talking Verismo. You know, in case you’re a masochist. [Laughing Squid] More »

Meet Beautiful Existence, the Woman Who’ll Be Living on Starbucks for a Full Year

Before anything else, yes, her name is Beautiful Existence, and yes, she might not have a very beautiful existence if she goes through with her challenge of chowing down on nothing but Starbucks food for a year.

I’m not saying Starbucks doesn’t serve stellar sandwiches, donuts, or coffee, because they do. Heck, I love their hot chocolate to pieces and it’s a drink I turn to when I’m feeling particularly down or homesick (when I’m away for work.)

Starbucks Lady

However, living only on Starbucks food for a year doesn’t sound appealing, even to a fan like me. Beautiful isn’t being sponsored by Starbucks or any other company, and if you do the math, she’ll be spending close to $7,000 the whole year due to this ‘resolution.’

Beautiful explains her motivation behind the challenge: “The company pays good benefits for part-time workers. That’s where my money is going… We’re really lucky and I would say actually spoiled as Americans because we have all these different eating options…You go to all these other countries and they don’t have these luxuries. Really? Is it really going to be that hard for one year of my life to limit my menu? We’ll find out.”

Sounds like a plan but I wonder what this is going to do to her health? We all saw what happened to that guy who ate nothing but McDonald’s for one month (remember Morgan Spurlock and his Super Size Me documentary?)

All I can say is… Good luck, Beautiful!

Starbucks begins selling Square card readers at 7,000 coffee shops

It wasn’t too much of a surprise to see Starbucks begin accepting Square payments at many of its coffee shops last year, but the company’s latest expansion of that partnership is a bit more unexpected. It’s announced today that it has started selling Square card readers at some 7,000 locations across the US, letting customers pick up a means to accept credit card payments along with their beverage of choice. That’s only the latest retail deal for Square following partnerships with Apple, Walmart, Best Buy and others, and as with those the readers themselves are essentially free — you pay $10 up front, but get a $10 credit that you can redeem after you activate your account.

Starbucks now allowing Square Wallet payments

Starbucks, the popular Italian-style coffeehouse chain, has announced today that it will begin accepting mobile payments through Square’s Square Wallet in around 7,000 Starbucks stores. The “aromatic” announcement follows after Starbucks and Square decided to team up in August this year to create a payment solution. And after breaking the news in October that coffee addicts will be able to pay their coveted cup using Square Wallet, it’s finally launching the payment solution beginning today. Square Wallet will now allow customers to pay at Starbucks using their phone.

To to that, customers will have to download the Square Wallet app on their Android and iOS device to setup an account and debit or credit card for payments. Once done, users will only need to tap the “pay here” button and scan their QR code. “Square Wallet gives people an easy way to pay at Starbucks and neighborhood businesses,” said William Henderson, Square Wallet director. “ We’re excited to work with Starbucks to introduce a broad new group of people to the benefits of using Square.” If you’re on Android, you can the app here. iOS users, on the other hand, can download the application here.

While you probably won’t be able to get Jack Dorsey to buy you a grande spearmint green tea the next time you go for coffee (we should know, we’ve tried), you can at least use his payment service. Yes, today’s the day that Starbucks begins accepting Square Wallet purchases at 7,000 of its stores — just scan a QR code or NFC-tap your smartphone to make a payment. In 2013, you’ll also be given the ability to tip your barista, presumably assuming you can go through the awkwardness of pre-selecting how much you think their service is worth in front of them.

Starbucks in-store wireless smartphone charging debuts in Boston

Folks in Boston who love drinking coffee while modding with their smartphones will be happy to know that Starbucks has just rolled out a series of wireless smartphone charging stations in Boston. The world-renowned Italian-style coffeehouse chain has partnered with Duracell Powermat to provide a limited time in-store trial for wireless charging in Boston. Approximately 17 locations were selected for the tests, with the first three stores located in One Financial Center, 125 Summer Street, and 101 Federal Street, respectively.

Starbucks uses the technology of Powermat to install charging pads into their tables. This, of course, will be made possible through a process called inductive charging, which uses electromagnetic field to transfer energy between two objects. Basically a charging station will send energy through inductive coupling to a smartphone that supports the said technology. Starbucks is planning the test the technology through the holiday season until early next year.

“Customers are coming into our stores every day with mobile devices, and putting them down on the table. If they could be charging their device at the same time, then we’ve connected with that customer and met their need, maybe even before they realized they had a need for wireless charging,” said Adam Brotman, the Chief Digital Officer at Starbucks.
