Swedish Politicians Compete In A StarCraft 2 Tournament Against Each Other

Swedish Politicians Compete In A StarCraft 2 Tournament Against Each OtherStarCraft 2 is a great game to teach gamers about strategy. It’s also a way to study the effects of aging, and it seems like it can also be used as a platform to help raise awareness about politics as well as politics amongst gamers, or at least that’s what Swedish politicians had in mind when they took part in a StarCraft 2 tournament over the weekend.

According to a report from The Daily Dot, the tournament was played for fun and was meant to help “raise awareness about eSports in politics, and politics among gamers.” It’s called “Politikerstarcraft” and was created by Jonathan Rider Lundkvist, a member of the Swedish Pirate Party that was put together in 2006 to help focus on issues like net neutrality, censorship, copyright, and so on.

The game, like we said, was held for fun and it’s actually the second time that such a game has been held. The participants included candidates for local government posts and came from parties like the Left, the Sweden Democrats, the Social Democrats, the Liberals, the Green part, and more. According to NyTeknik, it seems that the Left party won the tournament.

It’s a pretty interesting way to go about politics and if only we could see more disputes and wars resolved over more peaceful means, like in a video game where the only casualty would be the pixels on the screen. What do you guys think of Sweden’s approach to politics?

Study Uses StarCraft 2 To Prove The Effects Of Aging

Study Uses StarCraft 2 To Prove The Effects Of AgingWe all know how old we are and for those of us who are in their 50s or 60s, well it’s safe to say that you’re energy levels, reaction times, and strength might not be what it used to be compared to when you were in your teens, early 20s, or 30s. In fact scientists have recently conducted a study in which they used Blizzard’s RTS game, StarCraft 2, to prove just how scary the aging process is.

Now StarCraft 2 is a pretty fast paced game and if you’ve seen the professionals play, you’ll know that they’re constantly clicking and pressing buttons from start to the end of the game. This is because there are a lot of things that need to be micro-managed, even in the heat of battle where you pull out dying troops or activate certain abilities and so on. (more…)

Patch 2.1 For StarCraft 2 Unlocks Custom Maps For Starter Edition Owners

Patch 2.1 For StarCraft 2 Unlocks Custom Maps For Starter Edition OwnersBlizzard’s StarCraft 2 is one of the hottest RTS games at the moment and is played worldwide in tournaments and championships. Unfortunately it isn’t necessarily free to play, although there is a Starter Edition that basically lets gamers enjoy some elements of the game, while restricting some features to those who have paid for the full version of it. Now the good news is that for gamers who are still holding out on purchasing a full version of game (maybe you’re waiting for all three expansions to be released and purchase them as a bundle, who knows) is that Blizzard has announce patch 2.1 for StarCraft 2 gamers that basically unlocks more features of the game for those who own the Starter Edition.

Previously one of the restrictions of the Starter Edition was that gamers could not access the Arcade section, but now thanks to patch 2.1, Starter Edition owners of the game will be able to access custom maps and the Arcade. The Arcade section is basically where custom maps and games are created. If you have played Warcraft 3, this is basically the same thing where you will be able to play all sorts of cool and weird custom maps created by other StarCraft 2 gamers. Heck, we’ve even seen how one gamer managed to create a StarCraft 2 MMO through the map editor, so who knows what other gems there are out there. The patch will be going live today but as Blizzard has stated, it will be rolled out region by region, so fret not if you haven’t received the update just yet.

Blizzard WCS App Announced, Lets You Stream StarCraft 2 Matches On The Go

Blizzard WCS App Announced, Lets You Stream StarCraft 2 Matches On The GoWhile games are meant to be played, rather than you watching someone else play it, it can sometimes be pretty entertaining watching professional gamers in their element where you can really see the game and its features being utilized to its full potential. The good news for StarCraft 2 fans is that if you were hoping to watch the StarCraft 2 World Championship Series but because you have a job or school which means you can’t glue yourself in front of your computer forever, Blizzard has announced a new Blizzard WCS App for iOS, which we assume could end up being a huge distraction at both school and work!

Basically what the app does, in case it wasn’t already obvious, is that it will keep you informed and up to date on the progress of the event. While Blizzard states that the app won’t make you a better player, there’s always something that can be learnt from watching the pros and see how they think and react. The app will allow viewers to stream the competition live, VODs of recent matches, stream video to a TV using Airplay, set reminders for upcoming matches, and even prevent “spoilers” of the results of matches for those who are really picky about these sorts of things. The app is free for download and will be compatible with iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch devices. No word on when an Android version will be released.

StarCraft 2 2.0.10 Patch Adds eSport Features And Color Blind Mode

Playing StarCraft 2 undoubtedly requires a lot of skill, so much so that the game and its predecessor have both enjoyed the competition circuit and are part of eSports. Well the good news for StarCraft 2 gamers who take the game pretty seriously in the competitive sense, Blizzard will be rolling out patch 2.0.10 this week which will be adding your usual bout of bug fixes, balances, along with some new eSports features and even a color blind mode that will assist players who might be afflicted with the problem.

Blizzard has updated the UI that will allow players to customize the Observe Interface and let them choose between a more detailed layout, or a more lightweight one. The new UI will also support additional zoom levels that will allow observers to gain a wider perspective along with a “Units Lost” overlay. Scrubbing the replays has also been made easier as Blizzard has made some improvements that will allow observers watching replays to find particular areas within a multiplayer match. If you’d like to learn more, you can hit up the official StarCraft 2 blog or check out the video above for the details.

Watch StarCraft 2 Played From A Professional’s Perspective

Playing real-time strategy (RTS) games like StarCraft 2 involves a lot of action from the player, and staying idle and clicking lazily will not win you games. This is so important to the point where prowess has even begun to be measured in actions-per-minute, or APM, whereby the top gamers usually manage to clock some impressive numbers. Of course high APM doesn’t necessarily equate to being good, but if you’ve always wondered how the pros of StarCraft 2, the video above was taken by GomTV’s Khaldor in which we basically get to look from a first person’s point of view at how one of the best players in StarCraft 2, STX_INnoVation, plays the game. Needless to say STX_INnoVation’s speed is incredible and breath taking, so if you have a few minutes to spare and want to have your mind blown, be sure to check it out in the video above.

StarCraft 2: Heart Of The Swarm Sells 1.1 Million Copies In 48 Hours

StarCraft 2: Heart Of The Swarm Sells 1.1 Million Copies In 48 HoursBlizzard’s StarCraft series of RTS games is no doubt pretty popular, especially in the competitive gaming scene where live television events have been broadcasted in countries such as South Korea where the video game is apparently taken very seriously. Like we said earlier, it is one heck of a popular game, but just how popular? Well according to the sales figures, it looks like Blizzard has managed to sell an impressive 1.1 million copies of StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm in 48 hours. To put things in perspective, Wing of Liberty managed to sell 1.5 million units in 48 hours, and while this might seem like a decline, those numbers could pick up later on.

For those unfamiliar with the StarCraft franchise, Heart of the Swarm is the successor to Wings of Liberty which was released a couple of years ago. The game, unlike the first StarCraft which saw all campaigns playable, is split up into 3 – one game for every race. Personally it feels like a way for Blizzard to make more money, but on the other hand having played through Wings of Liberty and Heart of the Swarm, it really does feel more like a complete game rather than an expensive expansion set. So, were you one of the 1.1 million that bought Heart of the Swarm? Or did you, like many professional gamers, retire after Wings of Liberty?

Blizzard Claims Nobody Is Close To Figuring Out StarCraft 2: Heart Of The Swarm Yet

Blizzard Claims Nobody Is Close To Figuring Out StarCraft 2: Heart Of The Swarm YetBlizzard’s super popular RTS game StarCraft 2 had its expansion, Heart of the Swarm, launched not too long ago. We’re sure that many players were excited about its release and have since gone and completed the campaign and are now furiously engaged in online multiplayer battle against each other. While we’re sure that there are hardcore gamers and theorycrafters out there who are busy crunching the numbers and figuring out the best strategy, according to Blizzard, it seems that players have yet to figure out the game just yet.

According to Blizzard’s David Kim on the RTS forums, “The super aggressive play is turning out to be really fun to watch. Nobody is close to figuring the game out yet. A few players are really changing up their play and having completely different results than what’s expected by the majority.” Kim went on to acknowledge that there are some initial balance concerns that may need to be addressed, but stated that there are players out there who are finding creative ways around them. “We’ll continue watching all the pro and community concerns, but keep in mind we’d really like the game to settle before we step in and make a move.”
