Blizzard looking into turning Starcraft 2′s multiplayer into a free-to-play experience

I’ve never really fancied the free-to-play model as it usually leads gamers to spend more than they would have if they had bought the game outright. However it seems that the F2P model is catching on and it seems that Blizzard might be interested in it as well. If you thought that this might have something to do with their MMORPG, World of Warcraft, you’d be mistaken as apparently Blizzard is currently looking at perhaps turning the Starcraft 2 multiplayer experience into a F2P one. This was revealed (via PCGamesn) at Valencia eSports Congress by Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm’s lead designer Dustin Bowder. However this is not a guarantee and is by no means confirmation, but rather Blizzard just exploring the possibility.

According to Bowder, “We don’t know how [Blizzard] would monetize it. While it might be good fun for me to play against someone with only half the units available to them, that’s not going to be an enjoyable experience for them.” What do you guys think? Should Blizzard embrace the F2P model for Starcraft 2?

StarCraft 2: Heart Of The Swarm unit details unveiled

You know for sure that a storyline as rich as StarCraft’s is definitely not going to remain just like that, as there are plenty more arcs for one to explore and tap, just like looking for new stomping grounds in order to harvest additional vespene gas. Having said that, additional unit details about StarCraft 2: Heart Of The Swarm has been uncovered, where among them would include a couple of new Zerg units; namely the Viper and the Swarm Host. The former represents a large dragonfly and will need a Spawning Pool, an Infestation Pit and eventually a Hive as a prerequisite. As for its abilities, you would be able to consume 200 life of a friendly building over 20 seconds, converting that into 50 energy. How’s that for a quick charge?

Abduct costs 75 energy, but this allows the Viper to pull a friendly or enemy unit to the Viper’s location thanks to its harpoon-like tongue. Definitely a game changer when you remove units from a certain death, which bodes well for the gas-and-mineral economy.

As for Blinding Cloud, that results in a 10 second cloud which reduces the attack range of biological and mechanical units to just melee range.

Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm beta now live

A while back we mentioned that Blizzard would be launching the Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm beta soon, and if you were looking forward to hearing some feedback on the game, well it’s your lucky day as Blizzard has announced that the Heart of the Swarm beta is now live. At this point in time the beta will only be open to pro-gamers, members of the press, contest winners and etc., and since the beta is not under NDA, we can look forward to hearing and seeing tons of reviews.

If you want to get in on the beta, fret not as Blizzard has also announced that the beta will eventually be opened to the rest of the public, although it will still be a selection process and not everyone is guaranteed access. In any case if you’d like to find out more on how to get in on the beta later, head on over to the Starcraft 2 blog for the details.

LAN still a no-show in StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm, apparently not part of Blizzard’s philosophy

Back in the day when internet speeds were not as fast as they are today, many gamers relied on LAN connections to play multiplayer games together. Blizzard’s games in the past used LAN, such as StarCraft and Warcraft, but as StarCraft 2 gamers are probably familiar, the LAN feature is currently missing. For those who don’t mind playing online, it’s not a big deal but for those who like to go to friend’s houses to play multiplayer games, having many friends hog the internet is usually a recipe for a slowed down connection. Now if you were hoping that Blizzard will introduce the LAN feature come Heart of the Swarm expansion, you’d be out of luck.

Speaking with PC Gamer, game balance designer David Kim stated that the LAN feature was not part of what Blizzard was trying to achieve, and as part of the bigger picture, it was not in line with their philosophy of how they are making the game. “I think moving forward we’ll be looking at things like ways where people who are nearer each other can find each other more easily. But that’s not necessarily LAN it’s just a way of finding people nearer to you.” So gamers are you bummed by this or did you resign yourself to the fact that the LAN feature will probably never be introduced in the end?

StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm beta coming “very soon”

Blizzard’s StarCraft 2 has enjoyed a huge amount of success, and if you’re looking forward to the next expansion, Heart of the Swarm, Blizzard has announced that the beta for the upcoming expansion is expected to take place “very soon”. The beta is expected to be sent out to a handful of players, such as those who helped test patch 1.5, pro gamers, the press (like us, hopefully!) and will basically beta test the multiplayer experience. Blizzard is also expected to add more testers to the mix over time and the good news is that you can opt in for the beta if you like. The instructions can be found on Blizzard’s website in the source link below, but it should be noted that opting in for the beta does not guarantee you a spot, but at least you’ll be on the list! So, who can’t wait to get their hands on the Heart of the Swarm beta?

SRK contest produces a 26button Starcraft II arcade controller, probably won't stop Zerg rushes video

Almost as a dare, Shoryuken (SRK) challenged its fans to produce a fighting game-style controller for Starcraft II. Mauricio Romano took them up on that contest and won with a surprisingly polished arcade stick of his own. Its cornerstone is a heavily modified Ultrastik joystick that’s turned into an on-controller, two-button mouse. You didn’t think a PC gamer would cling to a plain joystick, did you? In the process, the usual 101 keys of a typical keyboard have been pared down to a set of 26 buttons most relevant for Blizzard’s real-time strategy epic. Packaged up in a single, polished USB peripheral, the one-off prototype’s design is good enough to imagine a Major League Gaming pro taking it out on the road. We’d put that idea on ice for now, though: as Mauricio shows in the video below, the learning curve is steep enough that most players won’t be fending off diamond-league marine and zergling blitzes anytime soon.

Starcraft 2 arcade stick can replace your keyboard and mouse

Starcraft Arcade StickAs most hardcore PC gamers will tell you – nothing will replace the traditional mouse and keyboard combo, especially when it comes to real time strategy games. However, that doesn’t stop people from trying to come up with alternatives. For SRK’s cross-over contest, a guy named Mauricio Romana decided to come up with an arcade stick that can be used to play Starcraft 2. His winning entry made use of an Ultrastick analog joystick configured to work as a mouse, and a collection of Sanwa buttons to replicate the keys of a keyboard.

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm can be played at gamescom

Blizzard is one games company that definitely has plenty of gamers in their pocket – figuratively speaking, of course, not only their hearts but their money as well. After all, they have basically churned out hit after hit, and prior to Diablo III being one heck of a title, there was the award winning StarCraft II title. Of course, another way to expand upon canon in the game as well as develop its stories further, would be to release expansions. And this is exactly what Blizzard has in mind with StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm. Blizzard recently announced that gamescom attendees will be able to play StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm – as well as WoW: Mists of Pandaria.

Basically, those who head out to the Blizzard Entertainment booth will also be able to enjoy a hands-on demo of World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, in addition to, in Blizzard’s own words, “take control of all-new terran, protoss, and zerg units,” in StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm. Of course, there is also Diablo III available just in case you are the only one left in your group who has yet to give it a go.
