Edmonton, Canada Man Wants a 1,000-Foot Wolverine Statue

Detroit is working on a Robocop statue, so of course Edmonton, Canada wants their own statue now. Not just any statue, mind you. They want a 1,000 foot tall statue of Wolverine. If this keeps up we are going to have superhero statues everywhere. I’m ok with that.
wolverine

It all started as a joke by Brian LaBelle who wanted to mock the city’s plan to build a pricey new arena, but the idea began to gain traction. Of course. Who wouldn’t want a giant Wolverine statue. LaBelle started a petition for the project. Here is his argument for why the statue would be important:

It is important to build this statue because in order for Edmonton to be considered a “world class” city, we NEED a statue similar to the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Statue of Liberty in New York City. Wolverine is arguably the most famous Albertan around the world and this statue would be a major boon for tourism in the city. It is also important because it is what is commonly referred to as a “catalyst project”, meaning it will spur greater growth on the downtown of Alberta’s capital city and create numerous spin-off projects in much the same way that the X-Men comic book spun off dozens of other successful books. In order for Edmonton to join the ranks of other world-class cities we need a hero to champion Edmonton across the globe, because Wolverine already does that as a former student at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning and as the current Headmaster of the Jean Grey School for Gifted Youngsters, he is the natural choice. Please don’t miss this opportunity to revitalize our downtown core Edmonton City Council, I fear the downtown arena and other developments will be in jeopardy if we don’t.

I doubt they will ever build the 1,000 foot version, but I’m sure we’ll eventually see a smaller one in Edmonton. Seems like another good use for Kickstarter.

Detroit’s Robocop Statue is Ready to Be Bronzed: I’d Buy That for $67,436 Dollars!

In 2011, a Kickstarter project raised more than $67,000 to build a Robocop statue for Detroit. Now the statue is finally ready to be cast in bronze and you have a chance to see what a pre-bronze Robocop statue looks like. It looks pretty sweet!

The design was sculpted by artist Frank Barton. The model as it is now, was done by Across The Board Creations by 3D scanning a smaller version of the design and digitally scaling it up to ten feet-tall. This pre-bronze assembly was put together from foam, wax, and clay and will be the model for the bronze cast.

Gotham has Batman. Metropolis has Superman. Detroit will now have it’s Robocop statue. Your move, punk!

Iron Man Mk. 42 Life-Size Figure: Iron Statue

Some Iron Man fans are not too keen on his gold-heavy Mark XLII armor, but if you’re absolutely enamored with it Sideshow Collectibles has the ultimate item for you – a life-size replica of the suit.

The armor stands 85″ tall (about 7′) and weighs 105 lbs. It’s finished with automotive paint to give it a glossy look and it has LEDs on its eyes, arc reactor, palms and on the display base.

You’ll need Tony Stark’s wallet to get it, but I think we all expected that. You can pre-order it from Sideshow Collectibles for $8,500 (USD). I wonder if it could be modded into a wearable suit.

Sandboxr 3D Printing Service: Toys R Yours

If the folks behind Sandboxr have their way, someday you won’t have to wait or hunt for figurines of your favorite game character. You’ll just log in to a website or even a mobile app, pick the character and order a 3D printed statue of it. You’ll even be able to customize its pose and accessories. It sounds too good to be true, but you can help make it real.

3D printing your own figurine is nothing new. Some of you may have used FigurePrints to get a replica of your Minecraft world or World of Warcraft character. Last month we also featured Autodesk123D Creature, which lets you make your own character and then order a 3D print right from your iPad. What should set Sandboxr apart are two things. First and most important of all is the company’s dream of becoming a central platform for 3D printing videogame characters, like a Steam for videogame figurines.

sandboxr game character 3d printing service 2

MAKE has a neat example of how Sandboxr could be integrated into videogames: “Imagine a game where every time you defeat a boss, you unlock that character’s model in Sandboxr. You can then order a print as a trophy rack, or fashion them wearing a tutu, signifying your total dominance of your enemies. Or a game could allow you to pose and outfit your in-game character in their best gear.” How awesome would that be?

The second potentially big thing about Sandboxr is in how it lets you tweak character models before you have them printed. They made it so you can run through a character’s various animations and then freeze the pose that you like. Imagine having your own unique Link statue. Or owning statues of the Team Fortress 2 characters in hilarious poses.

Right now Sandboxr is in closed beta, which you can get into by pledging at least $5 (USD) into their Kickstarter. As of this writing they’ve only raised a little over $14,000, way below their $125,000 goal. But the state of their Kickstarter is not why I’m not so optimistic about this service. It’s just that I don’t see major game publishers partnering with Sandboxr. Why would they do that when they can start their own similar service and keep all the money for themselves?

Indie games could be all over Sandboxr, but they don’t have the reach or appeal of mainstream games that Sandboxr needs to grow and prosper. For example, Sandboxr has already partnered with Supervillain Studios, maker of Tower Wars, Order Up! and Fat Princess. They’re good games, but I’m sure more gamers would rather order a Magikarp, Nathan Drake or Master Chief statue. Without in-demand game characters, Sandboxr loses much of its appeal.

But I am wondering if Sandboxr can become the deviantART of 3D models, i.e. a community of artists who upload “fan-made 3D models” of copyrighted characters that people can then order as statues. Or will deviantART get there first?

Google’s Latest Android Statue Is Resplendent in Chrome

Google’s a massive fan of celebrating Android through the medium of sculpture. Its latest, though, is a surprisingly tasteful vision in shiny, shiny chrome, strapped to the side of one of Google’s Mountain View buildings. More »

Did Google make its latest Android statue out of chrome for a reason?

Did Google make its latest Android statue out of chrome for a reason

When Google staffer Paul Wilcox started throwing pebbles at his girlfriend’s office window, he never expected to be confronted by an angry giant Android made out of chrome. But crazy things happen at Mountain View all the time and Wilcox was quick to recover his composure.

“What have you done with my girlfriend?” he cried. And then, “why, of all things, are you made out of chrome?!”

Eventually Wilcox realized it was just a statue, recently put up in the mostly-green robot’s honor, and that his girlfriend was safe and well. (Honestly, we just invented the whole girlfriend thing for dramatic effect, and we don’t know where she works.) Anyways, the question remains: why this particular metallic finish? Is it to mark the constant updates to the Chrome browser on Android devices? Possibly. Or could it be, as MobileGeeks suggests, some oblique reference to Android apps running in a Chrome browser on some other OS? We don’t know, but imagine this: an Android app running in a Chrome browser running as an Android app running in a Chrome browser… Freaky, right?

Thing Pumpkin Statue: The Fantastic Gourds

Thing is one of Marvel’s coolest superheros. Well, aside from Spidey, Wolverine, Iron Man, the Hulk and… Okay, so he’s not an A-list Marvel superhero, but he’s still pretty awesome in my book. He’s definitely the coolest member of The Fantastic Four.
the thing
And that is probably why redditor Wizardtig created this life-sized version made from 11 busted-up pumpkins. I have to say, pumpkins make some surprisingly good Thing skin. This statue stands 6’4″ tall, and is even built on a custom wood platform.

The whole thing is lit up from inside and you just know that the neighborhood kids are loving this. Awesome job, Wizardtig. You know how to use smashed pumpkins better than anybody.

Licensed Portal 2 Turret replica to arrive later this year, leave bullets at home

If an enthusiast-built Portal 2 turret piques your interest, Gaming Heads’ Valve-licensed miniature replica may very well force your wallet open. Modeled using Portal 2‘s in-game assets and cast in “high quality poly-stone,” these mini-turrets aim to intimidate intruders with a motion activated light-up eye. In addition to the stoically silent basic model, the company’s offering an exclusive edition, which plays sounds and voice samples from the game. Only 1,100 of these hand painted facsimiles will be produced (350 with sound, 750 without), but the company notes that other figures based on the adorable death machines are in the works. Pre-orders have already begun, so collectors will want to act fast — provided they’re ready to pony up $300-325, of course.
