It’s not a Steam Box, but they want us to believe it is: Xi3’s Piston might be the most confusing product in gaming this year, thanks to some muddled messaging and a deal with Valve that never went anywhere.
Here are the specs for the prototype Steam Box units that Valve will be sending out. Rather than just sending a single design to the lucky beta testers, they’ll be sending out a variety of units. And holy crap, the top-of-the-line will be spec’d to high heaven.
Following the announcement of SteamOS, Valve just unveiled the long-anticipated Steam Box — sort of. Instead of releasing a Valve-branded Steam Box, the company will actually work with multiple manufacturers to release a series of Steam machines for your living room.
Yet, Valve also presented a specific prototype, a Steam machine designed by Valve. This particular machine is closer to what everyone expected. For now, only 300 copies will be produced and sent to lucky beta testers. The company doesn’t say whether those prototypes will eventually become the Steam Box, but it wouldn’t surprise anyone.
As for the Steam machines, Valve promises “an array of specifications, price, and performance.” It could be pretty similar to the Chromebook lineup. Customers will be presented with multiple performance tiers — it should make it easier to buy a traditional gaming computer. Hardware will be hackable and you will be able to install another operating system for example.
As a reminder, SteamOS is a Linux-based operating system for your living room. It is optimized for gaming, movies and music. While many games are not available on Linux, SteamOS allows you to stream your games from your Windows or Mac machines using your local network
Today’s announcement is very short and doesn’t say which OEM will actually build Steam machines. All we know is that they will ship in 2014. The Valve-branded prototype could come to beta testers earlier as the company will select beta testers on October 25th.
On Steam’s website, users can find a teaser page with three icons that represent three different announcements for the living room — SteamOS and the Steam machines were only the first two announcements. Valve hints at a new input method for the third one. On Friday, Valve should answer the last standing question — which game controller will ship with the Steam machines?
Valve has talked a lot in the past about shifting PC gaming to living rooms, it has now launched a new teaser website which promises three separate announcements related to such a shift. Right now, the website contains a countdown clock for the first announcement, its counting down until 10 a.m. PT on September 23rd. Clocks for the remaining announcements haven’t been added as yet.
Is it possible that Valve might finally be making a Steam Box related announcement? This was first reported a few days ago, when Valve co-founder Gabe Newell referred to Linux as the “future of gaming” at LinuxCon 2013. He also said that the company will reveal more information about the opportunities it sees for bringing Linux to the living room, next week. A representative for Valve reiterated that they’ll be talking about the steps they’re taking to make Steam more accessible on TVs and in the living room. Valve says on its teaser website that this year it has been working on more ways to “connect the dots for customers who want Steam in the living room,” it also says that soon “we’ll be adding you to our design process.” We’re certainly curious how Valve intends to include users in the design process, hopefully it’ll explain in detail come Monday.

Xi3 Says While Piston May Not Be An ‘Official’ Steam Box, It Could Be Better Than One
Posted in: Today's ChiliThe Xi3 Piston opened for pre-orders on Monday, and seemed to be the first of many Steam Box type devices powered by Valve’s online gaming store and service. But Valve quickly came out and said that despite their investment in Xi3, the company has no “official involvement” in the development of the Piston itself. Now Xi3 is firing back, admitting that while it received investment and the Piston console was built as the result of a request to build a device specifically for Valve, Valve isn’t currently involved in the project.
Xi3 says that Valve president Gabe Newell personally asked its founder and CEO Jason A. Sullivan not to disclose any info about the relationship between the two companies, and that’s just what it has done. The Piston was never an official “Steam Box,” Xi3 says, which is also what we pointed out in our article. Instead, we suggested it would be one of many devices from third-party OEMs that could fit the generic description of a PC console designed for Steam.
The release from Xi3 also goes on to claim that the Piston can actually do one better than any official hardware, since it’s fully open to support a whole host of different gaming platforms, not just Valve’s. Xi3 also says that it’ll ship with Windows initially, since that’s where the “vast bulk of game software and computer gamers are today,” not Linux (thought it is Linux-compatible). Xi3 says this is where Valve and it have a philosophical difference, and where the Piston will be able to offer consumers more choice than any officially blessed Steam Box.
Sullivan says in the release that pre-order demand has been very strong so far, and the company is actually concerned it won’t be able to meet holiday 2013 demand for the console. But the tone overall seems a little like that of a child whose affection was spurned: it gives the impression that Xi3 was slightly taken aback at the force with which Valve distanced itself from the Piston project.
Whatever the situation between Xi3 and Valve, the upshot is that there will be ‘Steam boxes’ and there will be ‘Steam Boxes,’ (Official) and Valve might have trouble keeping the public educated as to which is which. And in the end you have to wonder if it matters, so long as both provide full access to Steam and its games in a console-style environment.
Valve’s ‘Piston’ Steam Box Console Available For Pre-Order Starting At $999
Posted in: Today's ChiliIt was at this year’s CES when we officially got to see Valve’s long-rumored Steam Box, which Valve teamed up with Xi3 in order to make it into an actual retail product. It’s only been two months since the Piston PC debuted at CES, and already its manufacturer Xi3 has started taking pre-orders for the device.
Xi3′s Piston Console, which is what the company is officially calling it, will probably be the most expensive “consoles” we’ve ever heard of as the company is setting its pre-order price at $999.99, although Xi3 is discounting it by $100 if potential customers place their order before 11:59 P.M. CST on March 17, 2013. (more…)

As some of you guys might have heard by now, Valve plans to invade the living room of gamers with their Steam Box, a console-like device that will be able to play Steam games. In fact Gabe Newell of Valve recently said that in a few months, he expects that they will be handing out several prototype units to customers for feedback and testing. While that sounds like a great idea, will Valve’s Steam Box be able to compete with the likes of Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft who are more established as far as consoles are concerned? (more…)

If you were enamored by Valve’s concept of the Steam Box, a console device that would allow the playing of games via Steam in the living room, then you might be pleased to learn that despite several layoffs, the company is still on track with their Steam Box project. In fact according to an interview with the BBC, Valve’s Gabe Newell revealed that they will be handing out prototypes of the Steam Box to some of their customers in the next three to four months. It is unclear as to what sort of requirements one would need in order to be considered eligible for this beta testing, but hopefully we will be able to learn more about the device and its capabilities, assuming there is no NDA involved. Earlier today, Valve has let go several employees who worked on Steam and Half-Life. The news was first reported on Gamasutra, but the conversation continued on the web. There is no definitive information on the motivation behind this decision but there is rampant speculation on the web. First, folks were wondering if it was the hardware group that was let go, and this sparked fear that Valve may be cancelling the Valve Steambox project. This probably came from the fact that one of the hardware designer was let go. (more…)
