Lomography reinvents Petzval lens for analog and digital SLRs

Lomography reinvents Petzval lens for analog and digital SLRs

When it was invented in 1840, the Petzval lens revolutionized photography thanks to its f/3.6 aperture. It’s legendary for producing images with super sharp centers and unique backgrounds with a whirly bokeh — as such it’s particularly well suited for shooting portraits. Most Petzval lenses today are defective because of age and not optimized for modern cameras, so Lomography set out to reinvent the lens for the 21st century. The company just launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring the Petzval lens back for $300 — it’s teaming up with Zenit to manufacture high-quality lenses for analog and digital SLRs with Nikon F and Canon EF mounts. Lomography’s Petzval lens is made of brass, features a gear rack focusing mechanism and comes with a Waterhouse aperture set (f/2.2, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11 and f/16). Are you as intrigued as we are? Follow the source link below for the full campaign details.

This Walking Lego Steampunk Ship is Terrifying!

As far as post-apocalyptic, steampunk-themed trading ships go, this MOC build is pretty impressive. Jason Allemann’s landship, Amagosa, is based on the "Strandbeest," a badass kinetic sculpture created by Theo Jansen. It’s mesmerizing to watch this Lego machine in action, but the tarantula-esque movements of the walker sorta freak me out (in the sense that I’m reminded of the giant mechanical spider from that terrible film, Wild Wild West).

Steampunk AT-AT Liquor Cabinet: for the Lords of the Victorian Empire

Vancouver artist Colin Johnson made a unique piece of furniture shaped like the AT-AT from The Empire Strikes Back. He calls it the Emperor’s Cabinet. You wouldn’t want to take down this Imperial Walker, but you would want to open it up. That’s because it’s hiding drinks behind its door.

Colin made it out of plywood, mahogany veneer, brass and glass. I wonder what a Jedi’s drink of choice would be. I assume the Sith just drink the blood and tears of their victims.

Colin is looking to sell the liquor cabinet to make room for his other projects. You can reach out to Colin on his website if you’re interested.

Owner gives Palm Pre 2 a steampunk makeover

Palm Pre 2 steampunk mod

Most people would buy a Bluetooth controller if they decide to keep an old phone for gaming, but one particular user from Chinese site Zoopda was struck with a better idea. Kissing his plan to buy a Bluetooth add-on goodbye, he instead spent a weekend adding steampunk-inspired accoutrements to his Palm Pre 2. Check out a video of the tricked out phone in action after the break. It’s not in English, but it might give you an idea of what to do with your old handheld devices in case you’re looking for something to go with your goggles and Victorian-era laptop.

Steampunk Nintendo Controller Coffee Table: NESSSS

Here’s a coffee table that would go well with the steampunk NES. It was made by Charles Lushear of Bohemian Workbench using found items. I wouldn’t disagree if you think it’s more junkyard than steampunk, but either way it’s an impressive piece.

The cedar wood tabletop used to be part of a fence, the A and B buttons are antique clock movements and the Start and Select buttons are vintage rifle magazines. But the most intriguing part is the directional pad.

Apparently that piece of metal is a Katanga cross or a handa, a copper cross that was used as a form of currency in the Democratic Republic of Congo from the 19th to the 20th century. Katanga Katanga cross, y’all.

Lushear is selling it on his Etsy shop for $2,600 (USD). That’s a lot of Katanga crosses.

Steampunk Nintendo NES Controller Table Is Made From Reclaimed Parts

Steampunk Nintendo NES Controller Table Is Made From Reclaimed PartsAre you a fan of retro video games and video game consoles? If you are, the image above you would have to agree is a sight to behold! Designed in the shape and style of the classic Nintendo NES controller, this is actually a coffee table that has been made out of recycled parts to resemble the NES controller and was designed by Charles Lushear and Bohemian Workbench. Measuring 40” in length and 18” in height, the table has actually been designed used recycled and reclaimed materials, so for those who love their gaming and care about the environment, this is a furniture that is just screaming your name!

For example the table’s frame is made out of a fence picked up by the side of the road, with the directional pad made from a copper cross, the buttons from antique clock movements and so on. Considering that the table was assembled using junk and parts lying around, at the moment only 1 unit is available and is priced on Etsy for a whopping $2,600! Kind of pricey but hey, it certainly is one of a kind!

Steampunk AT-AT Walker: The Ultimate Engagement Gift

What do you get your fiancee when you are both Star Wars fans? Well, you could get her a boxed set of movies, but a steampunk AT-AT is an even better idea. Too bad it doesn’t actually spew smoke. That’s just some clever Photoshopping.

Broken Journalist made this awesome AT-AT to give to his fiance as an engagement present and thereby assaulted her cold Hoth heart. I’m sure her heart is fine, but it never hurts to present an amazing gift to the one you love.

It actually started out as a vintage AT-AT toy. I love the patina on this thing, which took a bunch of coats of paint to create. You gotta love that widow’s walk on top too.

Steampunk Locomotive Barbecue Grill: Chew Chew

This is a real man’s grill. Not some round pot on a tripod that you shove coals in and forget about on the back porch. If I have all the translations right, this was made by a group called “Tvoryukami” for a private owner. The guy loves to grill obviously and has a ton of money to burn (and now he has a place to do it.)

People in the Russian village near Ryazan Deulino don’t have a lot to do, so they are apparently craftsmen, building all kinds of cool stuff. Like this amazing 4-ton locomotive barbecue pit that has three bays and a brick-lined furnace. Some of the controls in the cab are even functional. For instance, the wheel turns the rotating spit.

This is a grill to kill all other grills. Maybe they can put it on the tracks and have a mobile barbecue.

Lady Froggy Steampunk Gatling Gun for Dainty Death Dealing

If you’re into steampunk cosplay, you know that it’s important to have the right weapon in your arsenal. While there are plenty of manly steampunk weapons out there, there aren’t too many for the ladies. The Lady Froggy aims to change that.

This eight-barreled, wrist-mounted gatling gun is sure to take down any evil top-hatted, mustache-twirling lotharios you might encounter on your steam-powered journey through the 1890s.

The Lady Froggy Gatling gun is handmade by Arsenal Best Armory, using polished brass, plastic, a metallic lacquer coating and embellished with Swarovski crystals. Because what lady weapon doesn’t have Swarovski crystals on it?

Keep in mind that the Lady Froggy Gatling gun doesn’t actually fire projectiles, but you probably will still have some ‘splainin’ to do if you try and wear it through airport security. They do have security checkpoints for dirigible flights, right?

Cyberpunk Robot Skull: the Borg Assimilate the Walking Dead

What the hell happened here? Did a Predator go hunting the Borg and take a trophy? Did the Borg assimilate a zombie? I have no idea. I just know that skulls are cool. Robot skulls are even better, and this hot, dead, robotic mess looks pretty bad-ass to me.
robot head
This skull is made from metal and has various tubes, a mohawk, a glowing LED eyeball, a Phillips head screw screwed through it’s face as if it were some robot right of passage and what appears to be head mounted lasers. Oh and some tubes that keep it all lubed up for some reason.

I love the wing nuts at the base, which would presumably tighten this thing down onto a body that is just as twisted. This mixed medium skull was made by horror sculpture artist Drakodarksydedesigns. Behold it’s awesomeness.
