Giant Steampunk Dragon, Enough Said

I don’t know about you, but I need a giant steampunk dragon in my home. One that doesn’t actually breath fire, because, well… no more home if it were to breath fire in my living room. This is exactly why Daenerys Targaryen is always on the move. You just can’t keep these things indoors.

Anyway, this sculpture by Kreatworks measures 10.8 feet-tall, 9 feet-long and 10 feet wide. Yes, this is an amazingly big dragon. It is made out of recycled metal and auto parts and weighs over 880 pounds. It may just sink into the foundation of your home if your floors aren’t well reinforced. And you can’t easily move it to vacuum underneath.

The one seen here was sold. Of course. Because large ass dragons are in demand. If you want one for yourself, Kreatworks will custom make one for you for just $11,500 (USD). Totally worth it. I’m gonna start saving today – though I have no idea how I’ll get it through the front door.

TC Makers: Inside Will Rockwell’s Steampunk Workshop

Screen Shot 2013-04-07 at 7.27.14 PM

Hidden amidst the winding pathways of Llewelyn Park, New Jersey, America’s oldest gated community, steampunk designer Will Rockwell is building a future that never was. He began his career as a TV producer but he always loved to tinker with metals, leather, and wood – the three components of good steampunk. After building a set of Rocketeer-style USB keys, friends turned him on to Etsy. He opened a shop and almost immediately was flooded with orders.

These designs are a labor of love for Rockwell who scours the junkyards of New Jersey for cool odds and ends. He has two workshops, one in Pennsylvania and one in the basement of his 1912 home.

Rockwell doen’t expect to get rich with his hobby but he’s doing well, nonetheless. His unique style, nautical-themed designs, and electronic additions to his devices meld the modern and the mysterious in a quirky way. My favorite project? His electric guitar outfitted with wild effects and knife switches, although his handmade USB keys are still amazing.

Will is definitely following the maker spirit and is even making a little money. His world is one of the imagination, full of undersea starships and steaming hard drives run by pistons. It’s enough to make you think you’ve stumbled upon the world of Captain Nemo via the Jersey Turnpike.

DIY theremin goggles marry the art of noise with steampunk style (video)

DIY theremin goggles marries the art of noise with steampunk style

Sometimes annoying just isn’t annoying enough. For DIY enthusiast and self-described “maker of awesome” Sarah Petkus, the incentive to irk was merely a happy by-product of her latest goggle design. The steampunk-ish effort, chronicled on Petkus’ blog Robotic Arts, combines some artfully arranged scrap metals with an integrated optical theremin that lets the wearer manipulate an incredibly unpleasant tone just by waving their hands and adjusting the amount of light fed into the sensors. Since the volume control and speaker are housed inside the eyepieces, the goggles are little more than a head-mounted accessory. But that shouldn’t stop cosplay types (or sociopaths) from strapping on a set and tweaking the nerves of unfortunate passers-by. That’s if Petkus gets around to selling the “eyewear.” For the public’s sake, we hope this inventive mod remains a one-off. Head past the break for a video demo of this cringe-inducing, gesture-controlled cacaphony.

Vacuum Tube Flash Drives Combine Old School, New School Tech

I’ve already got more flash drives than I know what to do with, but every once in a while I’ll see some that I need to add to my seemingly endless collection anyway. With these cool flash drives made out of old vacuum tubes, you’ll be able to send your data back in time.

red vacuum tube flash drive

They’re made by Latvian steampunk artist Slava Tech, and use old Pentode tubes as containers for USB flash memory. The coolest part is how they glow from the red, green or blue LED inside. It would be really cool if he made one with an orange LED for a more authentic look, though the red one is pretty close.

blue vacuum tube flash drive

Each one is based on a high quality SanDisk flash drive, set into an old Russian vacuum tube from the 1980s, and accented with copper details.

green vacuum tube flash drive

Prices for the vacuum tube flash drives range from $69 to $79(USD), and they’re currently available in either 8GB or 16GB storage options.

Iron Man Arc Reactor Pocket Watch: If He Only Had a Heart

If Tony Stark had been born a century or two earlier,  he would have probably skipped the high-tech Arc Reactor and gone with something more like the Tin Woodsman had – a pocket watch heart. This is what that watch would look like. Yeah, basically a pocket watch that matches Iron Man’s armor.
iron man watch
This Iron Man steampunk style pocket watch was made by Adi Simion and even though it may not be able to keep track of time, I know that I would buy one in a heartbeat.

It also reminds me that we need to take some of these superheros and throw them into the Victorian era. Those are the movies that I would like to see. Somebody get on that.

Atomic Clear Tube Lighting: Turn Your Pad into Your Steampunk HQ

There are plenty of different kinds of lights to illuminate your home or office with, but I’ve never seen anything quite as interesting as these lights. They almost look like neon tubes, but the designers say that they can be used to light up ceilings, walls, floors, and just about anything else.

The Atomic Clear Tubing system was developed by Polish design group Em and Es, and allows people to experiment with the modular design. They can be positioned horizontally and vertically, and are available in modules of 18″, 26″, and 35″, which can work as single units or be joined together. The fittings can be coated in a number of different colors.

The system also promises to eliminate problems with cables and wires, building the power circuitry into each section.

Steampunk Cellphone Casemod: Gorilla Brass

We’ve seen a steampunk desk phone before, but Andrei of Steampunker steamrolls that with his awesome casemod. He replaced all of the external parts of a mobile phone with brass or copper and gave it a shiny yet grimy finish to make it look like it’s always been that way.

Here’s what the phone looked like before Andrei got his hands on it:

Check out the pictures below to see more of the phone’s details, including the engraving on the inside of the rear cover, which seems like it contains a lost and found message.

Steampunk Batman Blaster Pistol: Where Does He Get All Those Wonderful Toys?

If you’ve ever read any of the Elseworlds trade paperbacks from the DC Universe, then you have seen your favorite heroes in “What if” scenarios – like Superman being a hero in Gotham while Batman is in Metropolis, or Batman in the Civil War – that sort of thing. Well, if you like your Batman from the Victorian era, check out this Steampunk Batman gun.

nerf batman gun

We’ve seen plenty of Steampunk weapons before, but I have never seen one specifically made for the Caped Crusader. This gun was originally a Mattel Triple Barrel Grapnel Gun, which can fire soft projectiles, a la Nerf.

It was painted up with copper and given some Bat decorations by Nerfenstein. I love the detail and now I want to see some Elseworlds stories on the big screen. We can start with Batman in Victorian London, packing this gun.

Holy Crap, This Nixie Clock is Cool

There’s just something so cool about the design of Nixie tubes – I think it’s just that for such an old technology, they’re still sort of timeless. It’s been a little while since I saw a really good looking Nixie clock though, but this one was definitely worth the wait.

lamina nixie clock 1

The extraordinary Lamina Nixie Clock was handcrafted by artist Zoltan Acs using walnut and maple woods, along with brass gears and disks to give it a look all its own. The designer says it’s a combination of Art Deco, Industrial and Steampunk, and I think he nailed the description. He forgot to mention that it’s just freakin’ good looking.

lamina nixie clock 2

This thing looks just as cool from the back as it does from the front.

lamina nixie clock 3

The clock uses antique Russian Nixie vacuum tubes, along with a cool blue LED glow to make them look like they’re floating in some sort of test chambers. And even better yet, it’s got an alarm function, so you could put this thing by your bedside and wake up to it every morning.

Of course, all of this intricate craftsmanship comes at a cost. The Lamina Nixie clock is listed for €1,100.00 (~$1500 USD), which means that most of us will just have to admire it from afar. But if you’ve got deep pockets, you can purchase this amazing work of functional art over on Etsy now.

This Steampunk arm guard comes with a working Bluetooth keyboard

While there are keyboards that pair with your smartphones or tablets via Bluetooth, they’re probably not as interesting compared to this Steampunk arm guard that features an actual working Bluetooth keyboard strapped onto it. While the Bluetooth keyboard itself might be your run of the mill keyboard, the fact that it has been done up Steampunk-style complete with leather and brass makes it stand out from the crowd, and probably adds on quite a bit to the price which its creator, Thomas Willeford of Brute Force Studios is asking $1,200 for. According to Willeford, these are some of the features that you can expect from the keyboard:

– 3-in-1 multimedia wireless keyboard (Keyboard, TouchPad, Laser Pointer)
– Control your media while sitting on the sofa, lounging in bed, up to 100 feet away
– Built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a short re-charge time
– Includes mini 2.4 GHz USB wireless receiver
– Wireless receiver stores inside keyboard when not in use
– Stand-by time: 500 – 700 hours

Also based on the photos, the keyboard arm guard will be available in either a square-key finish, or a round-key finish depending on your preference. It might not be the most practical thing but if you’ve got $1,200 to spare and wouldn’t mind walking around with it strapped to your arm, head on over to Willeford’s Etsy page to purchase one for yourself.
