MSI unveils lightweight GS70 gaming laptop, hopes to take Razer’s crown

MSI unveils GS70 gaming laptop, hopes to claim Razer's lightweight crown

MSI tentatively entered the world of thin and light gaming laptops with the GE40. With the newly launched GS70, the company is leaping in with both feet. The 17.3-inch portable is clearly built to take on the Razer Blade Pro, mating a big screen with a chassis that’s even lighter — at 5.7 pounds, the GS70 is a flyweight next to its 6.6-pound rival. While the system’s quad-core, Haswell-based Core i7 CPU, GeForce GTX 765M graphics and 128GB SSD match what Razer offers, MSI doubles the RAM to 16GB and complements its storage with a 750GB hard drive. That makes the GS70’s $1,800 base price a potential bargain — if you don’t mind losing the Blade Pro’s touchscreen trackpad, you’ll get more PC for the money.

SteelSeries to unveil line of gaming headsets at E3 2013

EMBARGO SteelSeries HSeries Headsets

Gaming accessory maker SteelSeries has a tradition of showcasing new products during conventions, and the firm will uphold it by unveiling the H-Series headset line at E3 2013. First in the series is the “tournament-grade” 9H headset with Dolby technology, a USB soundcard, and padded ear cushions that feature sound isolation technology. Next is the 5Hv3 headset that boasts a retractable microphone and the same sound isolation technology the 9H has. Finally, there’s the compact and foldable 3Hv2 with its own retractable mic. All three are intended for use on Macs and PCs, but they have swappable ends or adaptors for use with mobile devices. Slated to be available by fall this year, the 9H is the priciest of the trio at $159.99. If you’re not quite keen on paying that much for a pair of gaming cans though, you can grab the 5Hv3 and the 3Hv2 this summer for $79.99 and $39.99, respectively.

SteelSeries Apex LED Gaming Keyboard Lets You Customize its Colors

There are tons of gaming keyboards on the market today, and many of them share the same basic feature set. Acessory maker SteelSeries has unveiled a new gaming keyboard called the Apex that has an impressively customizable backlighting system to set it apart from the masses. The keyboard is capable of displaying 16.8 million different backlight colors.

The backlight also has eight levels of dimming control, and you can select which areas of the keyboard you want to be a specific color. That means you could make keys that go with macros for your favorite game one color, while leaving the remainder of the keyboard another color. Though unlike the completely customizeable Luxeed LED keyboard, this one only supports 5 predefined color zones. It would be nice if you could individually address each key.

Other than the fancy LED lighting system, the keyboard also has 22 macro keys. Each of those keys has four functions states – for a total of 88 possible macros. The keyboard also features anti-ghosting technology supporting up to 20 concurrent key presses. One of the more unusual features of the keyboard is two extra arrow keys that point up/left and up/right for quickly moving on the diagonal.

The SteelSeries Apex keyboard is available now for $99(USD).

SteelSeries unveils super colorful Apex gaming keyboard

If you are a computer gamer, you know what a big difference having the right gaming keyboard can make. Trying to play something like a first person shooter on a normal keyboard can be very irritating. The problem many standard keyboards have when it comes to gaming is ghosting where even when you remove your hands from the keys, whatever action you were doing keeps happening.

If you’re in the market for new gaming keyboard, SteelSeries has announced a new gaming keyboard called the Apex. The most interesting thing about the keyboard is that it has lots of color customization capabilities. Keyboard has five independent lighting zones each capable of displaying 16.8 million colors and eight levels of brightness.

The keyboard also has 22 different macro keys with 10 on the left side of the keyboard and the remainder above the function keys. Those macro keys support four different function settings giving you a total of 88 macro keys. You can also customize the color of those macro keys independently making it a bit easier to remember where you bound your commands.

The keyboard also has anti-ghosting technology supporting up to 20 simultaneous key presses. The keyboard also has something I’ve never seen on a gaming keyboard before, it has a pair of extra arrow keys. Typically you get left, right, up, and down arrow keys and the Apex keyboard adds in diagonal left and right up keys. The Apex keyboard will be available for $99.

SteelSeries announces Apex and Apex [RAW] gaming keyboards (yes, the keys are backlit)

If the keyboards we saw in the run up to CES told us anything, it’s that you ain’t a serious gamer unless your keys be lit. We guess it’s a good thing, then, that the two new ‘boards SteelSeries has brought to the show — the Apex and Apex [RAW] — aren’t lacking that all-important backlighting. Both feature low-riding main keys, an extra-fat space bar, a bunch of macro keys, some extra arrow keys, and various other tricks and treats to give you the upper hand in-game. Despite the [RAW] sounding cooler, it’s actually the lower-spec model, with a few less macro keys / options and only white backlights. The Apex ‘proper’ (pictured above) adds a couple of USB ports to the frame, multicolor backlighting with “ActiveZones” for painting different sections distinct hues, and extra customization options for “more ways to win.” SteelSeries’ Engine software manages your setup — profiles, macros, lighting and such — as well as recording keystroke stats if that’s your bag. The Apex and Apex [RAW] won’t be hitting stores until Q2 this year, but when they do, expect them to set you back $100 / $70, respectively.

MSI ships GX60 gaming laptop to the US, gives us high-end AMD gaming for $1,300

MSI ships GX60 gaming laptop to the US, gives us highend AMD gaming for $1,300

MSI made a reasonable case for AMD-based gaming when it unveiled the GX60 laptop back in September… just not for Americans looking to buy one right away. There’s a better argument now that the 15.6-inch portable is shipping to the US this week. The $1,300 asking price isn’t quite impulse level, but it’s a relative steal for a system whose quad-core, 2.3GHz A10-4600M processor and Radeon HD 7970M should handle modern games without much fuss. The 8GB of RAM, 750GB hard drive, Blu-ray drive, SteelSeries keyboard and Killer networking don’t hurt, either. As long as the GX60’s 7.7-pound weight isn’t too imposing, it might be the ticket to wielding a brag-worthy PC at the next LAN party without having to follow the Intel-owning pack.
