Memorial To Steve Jobs Shaped Like An iPhone Unveiled In Russia

It’s been over a year since Steve Jobs’ passing which sparked many Apple Stores around the world to be instant memorials as people made trips to their local stores in order to show their condolences. Memorials for Jobs still seem to be popping up, the latest one being located in St. Petersburg, Russia.

A six-foot tall interactive monument shaped like an iPhone 5 is being used to display photos and videos from key moments in Jobs’ life including famous speeches that also appear as text with translations available in a number of languages. And just like Apple’s iPhone, the monument’s display is a touchscreen which can be manipulated to select different parts of his biography.

A QR code is also located on the back of the monument that can take visitors to a specific website commemorating Jobs when scanned.

The monument can be seen in the courtyard of the St. Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics, that is, if you plan on being in Russia anytime soon. If not, then just take our word for it that it’s there.

Steve Jobs’ Venus yacht shown in fresh footage

Steve Jobs’ yacht, the Starck-designed Venus, hasn’t had an easy time over the holidays, impounded in Amsterdam over unpaid bills, but that gave harbor hunters a chance to snap some new video of the crisp-edged craft. Michiel Frackers took a post-Christmas walk to the former container terminal where Venus was being held, and rather fittingly used an iPhone 5 to film the distinctive yacht as it was being tended to by crew.

“There were a few people on board cleaning the upper deck, but there was nobody else around” Frackers said of Venus. He also spoke up in the yacht’s defense, after criticism from some quarters as to Jobs’ and Starck’s pared-back aesthetic, arguing that “it’s a very unique design that looks much better up close than in pictures or even in a video.”

Custom-designed for the former Apple CEO, Venus is 260ft long and was constructed by Feadship in the Netherlands at a cost of more than €100m ($133m). €9m of that was French designer Philippe Starck’s fee, an unpaid €3m of which caused authorities to impound the yacht before Christmas.

A swiftly identified security deposit lurking in a bank account saw Venus freed after five contentious days, though exactly what will happen to the craft is unclear. More on Venus’ specifications (and iMac-filled interior) here.

[Thanks Toby!]

Steve Jobs’s Yacht Captured In Video

Now here’s something you don’t see everyday. If you’ve been dying to see Steve Jobs’s muti-million dollar yacht from up close, an Amsterdam-based investor named Michiel Frackers was able to shoot a video of the techie ”Venus” docked in a desolate area of the Amsterdam harbor this month. Frackers has just posted the video on YouTube for everyone to see. (more…)

Steve Jobs Yacht freed from impound

We can now all move on with our lives amid the freeing of the Steve Jobs-commissioned superyacht from impound as the estate and designer Philippe Starck have reached a monetary agreement. This agreement comes after the Starck group Ubik set the ship in impound because of unpaid fees from the Steve Jobs estate. The big news today has the ship set free. It’s been a devastating five days that the ship has been stopped from glorious water freedom.

It would appear that Starck’s attorney Gérard Moussault has spoken with French daily Le Monde about the situation this week, assuring us all that the Jobs estate had placed a security deposit in a bank account so that the ship could be set free. The amount placed in the account has not yet been made clear. The folks working for Starck had hired a debt collection agency to create a legal order to keep the boat from leaving the Netherlands.

Bloomberg reported that the disagreement included a loose agreement in which Starck would receive 6 percent of the yachts end construction costs. The initial cost of the ship was supposed to be 150 million euros, but according to the Steve Jobs estate, the final cost ended up being closer to 105 million euros – because of this rather sizable difference, the final payment to Starck ended up being 3 million euros short.

The ship goes by the name Venus and has been described several times over the course of the past year. This massive ship is controlled with Apple products such as the set of iMac machines pictured in the one hands-on tour given of the ship this Summer. Have a peek at the timeline below to check out the full epic journey of this beast from rumor to release.

Steve Jobs’ Yacht Is Free to Sail After Being Repossessed

Last week we reported that Steve Jobs’ yacht, Venus, had been repossessed in the Netherlands at the behest of designer Philippe Starck, who claimed that the Jobs family owed him three million Euros. Classy move, Starck. Well, the yacht is free to sail again. More »

Steve Jobs’s Yacht Now Free To Go Home

jOBS film to debut at Sundance Film Festival

We’ve talked on several occasions about the Steve Jobs bio picture made independently with Ashton Kutcher playing Jobs. The movie is called jOBS and originally I thought it was a very strange choice to put Ashton Kutcher in the lead. As more photos from the set of the film surfaced, it was clear Kutcher and the 70s version of Steve Jobs look eerily similar.

Check out the photograph above to see what I mean. Anyone familiar with Kutcher will recognize him on the left and 70s Steve Jobs on the right. We have some more details on the jOBS biopic that have surfaced this week. Previously the film was aiming for a Q4 2012 launch.

Since this is Q4 2012, fans of Kutcher might be wondering exactly when the film will debut. It appears that the Q4 launch window originally promised won’t be met. The movie is set for its first screening on January 27, 2013, which is the last night of the Sundance Film Festival.

Obviously, that moves the picture from a Q4 debut to a Q1 2013 debut. It remains unclear when or if the film will be released into movie theaters. There have been some indications in the past that the movie might go straight to TV. The jOBS biofilm covers 30 years of Steve Jobs’ life from 1971 to 2000.

We learned today that 4G LTE networks are surprisingly easy to bring down, and Dell’s earnings for Q3 are showing a pretty big decline year-over-year. Usage of Microsoft’s SkyDrive has doubled in six months (and there are new features on the way), while a new survey is telling us that consumer demand for Windows 8 is a little on the low side.

Steve Ballmer had some harsh words for the likes of Android and Apple today, while we learned that thieves made off with a shipment of 3,600 iPad minis. The HTC Deluxe was leaked today, leading us believe that it’s the international version of the HTC DROID DNA, and a new augmented reality game called Google Ingress was officially revealed.
