Vacuum Tube Flash Drives Combine Old School, New School Tech

I’ve already got more flash drives than I know what to do with, but every once in a while I’ll see some that I need to add to my seemingly endless collection anyway. With these cool flash drives made out of old vacuum tubes, you’ll be able to send your data back in time.

red vacuum tube flash drive

They’re made by Latvian steampunk artist Slava Tech, and use old Pentode tubes as containers for USB flash memory. The coolest part is how they glow from the red, green or blue LED inside. It would be really cool if he made one with an orange LED for a more authentic look, though the red one is pretty close.

blue vacuum tube flash drive

Each one is based on a high quality SanDisk flash drive, set into an old Russian vacuum tube from the 1980s, and accented with copper details.

Prices for the vacuum tube flash drives range from $69 to $79(USD), and they’re currently available in either 8GB or 16GB storage options.

Mimobot’s US Presidents flash drives give Americans patriotic storage

Mimobot's Lincoln, Washington flash drives give Americans patriotic storage

We wouldn’t have foreseen thumb drives figuring prominently into our President’s Day observations, and yet… here we are. In sync with the holiday, Mimoco has kicked off a US Presidents collection of Mimobot storage that lets Americans carry their national pride on their USB 2.0 ports. Abraham Lincoln and George Washington are the only current options — what, no William Henry Harrison model? — but the 8GB to 64GB of capacity should keep either stick useful once the novelty wears off. As long as you’re prepared to spend between $20 to $130 to pick one up, either of the Mimobots is a decent choice for a drive. Just hurry if you want a flash-based replica of the country’s key founder — there’s only 1,000 Washington drives to go around.

SugarSync 2.0 completed, offers drag-and-drop sharing and a new Android app

SugarSync 20 now official with draganddrop sharing, reworked Android app

SugarSync 2.0 has been in the oven for awhile, having gone into beta last year, but it’s now fully baked. The finished version offers the promised extra-simple sharing and syncing, with drag-and-drop transfers to the cloud, contacts and Dropbox-style public links. A virtual drive and cloud search simply things, too. Both desktop and web apps get more of a consistent look, and the Android app has been given its promised overhaul both for the new features as well as to offer uploads and syncing from an SD card. Android, Mac and Windows users can update at their leisure; iOS users will have to wait a few weeks, although both new and old versions can coexist until everyone is on the same page.
