OCZ demos Vector SSD in even speedier PCI Express form for the pros

OCZ demos Vector SSD in even speedier PCI Express form for the pros

OCZ produced something of a surprise when its in-house Vector SSD stood well against more seasoned competition. It’s proud enough of that feat that it’s following up with demos of a PCI Express model for creative pros and others that may deal with exceptionally massive file transfers. The switch away from SATA isn’t just cosmetic, as PC Perspective saw: PCIe gives the Vector more bandwidth and raw actions per second, on top of boosting the peak storage and reducing lag. OCZ warns us that the demo unit is a prototype and doesn’t say when we might see a production model, though we’d venture that the usual PCIe storage price premium will be in effect.

These Rugged, Encrypted Pocket Drives Keep Your Data Locked Up Safe

There are plenty of external drives floating around at CES, but Rocstor’s offer up a rugged casing and secure encryption in a surprisingly sleek package. More »

Rocstor unveils three ruggedized pocket drives at CES: Amphibious X5, Hawker HX and Lancer LX

Rocstor unveils three ruggedized pocket drives at CES Amphibous X5, Hawker HX and Lancer LX to arrive later this month

We’ve seen quite a few external enclosures trotted out at CES already and now Rocstor’s looking to reveal its cards. The company has announced three ruggedized pocket drives: the Amphibious X5, Hawker HX and Lancer LX. Following up last year’s X7, this year’s Amphibious model casts off the Smart Card while keeping the AES-256 encryption and both FIPS and NIST Cryptographic Engine validation with single-factor authentication. USB and FireWire connections return for the key-code unlocking unit in 64GB to 512GB SSD options and HDD varieties ranging from 250GB to 1TB. The Hawker HX keeps all of the above listed specs except for the FireWire connections and the pass code access. Finally, the Lancer LX scraps the super secure internals, but brings back FireWire — adding a second port to boot — and touts 64GB to 256GB SDD and 500GB to 1TB HDD models. All three offerings sport aluminum-clad, shock-absorbing ruggedized frames and will arrive this month. No word on pricing for any of the trio yet, though.

Kingston 1TB USB 3.0 Thumb Drive Hands-on

Earlier this week we mentioned the folks from Kingston unveiled the worlds first USB 3.0 thumb or flash drive to also have a full 1000GB of storage. We’ve certainly seen 1TB flash drives before, but none support USB 3.0 at the moment. Today here at CES we managed to quickly get some hands-on pictures with the new flash drive so check it out.

1TB of storage just slightly bigger than the size of a thumb rocking USB 3.0 speeds. That’s just crazy. I want one already. Sadly as I’m sure many of you know, the price tag is pretty ridiculous. Now like mentioned above, we’ve seen 1000 GB flash drives before, so lets talk about the speed in this crazy fast thumb drive.

Kingston has added this to their HyperX Predator series for the simple fact that it’s blazing fast and they didn’t compromise on speed when building this device. Kingston’s Predator doesn’t skimp on speed, at all. Promising read/write speeds of up to 240MB/s and 160MB/s, respectively. Nice right?

It might not be as fast as many SSD’s available today, but then again this this is relatively small and fits in your shirt or pants pocket. Then as usual Kingston’s popular wireless storage WiDrive was updated and their new model features removable storage — instead of the integrated versions available today. Add this 1TB thumb drive to that and you’ll have your own 1TB of sweet sweet storage. Almost your own personal cloud as the storage is all accessible over WiFi. The 1TB HyperX Predator will be available later in Q1, and while the price hasn’t been disclosed yet, the 512GB version is available for a staggering $1,750. Tough pill to swallow right there. Expect a rather steep price when they reveal all the details later this month. Start saving those nickels.

Mushkin launches ‘next generation’ USB 3.0 drive, promises 300MBs read/write speeds

Mushkin launches 'next generation' USB 30 drive, promises 300MBs readwrite speeds

While Mushkin tipped its hand early regarding details of its “world’s first” 480GB mSATA SSD, it did keep one thing back for CES. It’s launching what it promises is a SandForce-packing, “next generation” USB 3.0 drive that will have read and write speeds of over 300 MB per second. The company is keeping the specifics about its performance, its pricing, availability and even its casing a secret for now, but we’ve gotten in touch and will update this when we learn more.

Corsair Voyager Air Keeps You Connected on the Go

Corsair has been a name in the computer accessory and peripheral market for a number of years. The company first made its reputation for creating some very speedy memory for enthusiast computers. Corsair also makes a number of USB devices such as flash drives and more. At CES 2013, Corsair unveiled a new mobile storage device called the Voyager Air.

voyager air

The Voyager Air is an all-in-one wireless mobile drive and home network storage solution. The portable hard drive comes in capacities of 500 GB or 1 TB and has integrated Wi-Fi, a rechargeable battery, Ethernet, and USB 3.0. When connected to an Ethernet cable, the Voyager Air acts as network connected storage.

The integrated Wi-Fi means that the Voyager Air can also act as a wireless network hub and repeater. An internal battery promises seven hours of use per charge. Corsair also has apps available for computers and smartphones which will allow users to stream video from the Voyager Air directly to their devices. The 500 GB version of the drive will sell for $199(USD) and 1 TB version will sell for $229 when they launch this February.

Corsair’s Voyager GT Turbo USB 3.0 flash drives put super fast I/O speeds in your pocket

Corsair's Voyager GT Turbo USB 30 flash drives put super fast IO speeds in your pocket

Corsair’s best known for its SSD and HDD storage solutions and gaming peripherals, but at CES this year the company has unveiled a trio of new USB 3.0 jump drives. Called the Flash Voyager GT Turbo, it promises to deliver read speeds of up to 260MB/s and writes of up to 235 MB/s. Corsair claims those speeds make it the fastest USB 3.0 flash drive on the planet — a claim we can neither confirm nor deny — but we can tell you that pricing starts at $50 for the 32GB version, while the 64 and 128GB models cost $90 and $180, respectively, and can be yours now if you venture over to Corsair’s website.

Corsair outs Voyager Air with WiFi storage, NAS, USB 3.0 and repeater all in one

Corsair launches Voyager Air with wireless storage, NAS, USB 30 and WiFi repeater in one

Corsair is very much associated with devices that need a physical connection to work, whether they’re thumb drives or memory sticks. It’s looking to cut the cord in style through its new Voyager Air. You’ll have seen some of what it does with a predecessor like Kingston’s Wi-Drive, with media streaming to Android and iOS devices, a WiFi repeater mode and USB 3.0 support, but Corsair’s drive goes the extra mile by serving as network attached storage through a gigabit Ethernet link. The 7-hour battery life when completely wireless certainly helps its prospects, at least among its immediate rivals. Corsair plans to ship the Voyager Air by early February in a 500GB version for $199 and 1TB for $229 versions; either price sounds reasonable for a home media server that ultimately doesn’t have to stay at home.
