Insert Coin Transporter, the collaborative cloud storage hub

Although cloud storage is a mainstay of modern teamwork, there’s any number of problems that come along with trusting it explicitly: the limited space for the money, the heavy dependence on a constant connection and the risk that a hack could expose sensitive projects. Veterans from Drobo, Sling Media and TiVo (among others) think they’ve got a much safer solution in the Transporter, a dedicated internet connected storage hub. Once online, the funnel-shaped device stores and automatically syncs files with the Transporters of invited friends and groups — and only their Transporters. The focused sharing space keeps data both private and accessible offline, while free accounts limit the costs to the hub and a 2.5-inch hard drive, if it isn’t already in the box.

Mushkin unveils world’s first 480 GB mSATA SSD

There are a few different types of SSDs on the market today for storing data in computer systems. Typically, when we think SSD what comes to mind are the 2.5-inch form factor drives that are used in larger notebooks and desktop computers. However, when it comes to putting SSDs and some of the incredibly thin ultrabooks and other small notebooks on the market those 2.5-inch form factor SSDs are simply too big.

In thin and small devices, mSATA SSDs such as the one in the picture above are typically used that do away with the housing and plug directly into the mainboard of the computer. Mushkin has announced a new extremely high-capacity mSATA SSD that is certain to find its way into high-end ultrabooks and other compact computing devices in the future.

The new storage device is the world’s first 480 GB mSATA SSD cramming an incredible amount of storage space into the tiny MO-300 mSATA form factor measuring 50.80 x 29.85 x 4.85 mm. The storage device uses the mini PCIe interface and has user upgradable firmware.

The SSD uses a SandForce SF-2281 SSD processor and supports ATA APM, Security Set, and NCQ features. The little storage device also has integrated BCH ECC providing up to 55 bits correctable per 512 byte sector. The little SSD will be available in early January via resellers and distributors for $499.99. With this little SSD being available via distributors, you should be able to find one to upgrade your existing computer.

Dropbox to open first overseas office in Dublin

Dropbox, the increasingly popular online storage service, has announced that it will open its first international office in Dublin, Ireland. By doing so, it will join the likes of Facebook and Google in establishing business in a place known for attracting tech companies. In addition to being its first international office, the Dublin location will be Dropbox’s second office.

As of the announcement, Dropbox hasn’t yet selected a building for its international office, nor has it chosen the individual who will head it all. The current Dropbox office is located in San Francisco, California. The company’s CEO Drew Houston has expressed that, despite the need to move into international territory, it is important for both offices to have the same “team culture.”

The majority of Dropbox’s users are located outside of the United States, with 200 countries being home to 100 million of the service’s users. Of its total user base, 30-percent of them are located in Europe. According to Houston, for Dropbox’s continual improvement and expansion, it’s important for the company to grow beyond the US.

We reported back on November 13 that the cloud service had hit its 100-millionth user. Over the course of this year, Dropbox has seen an explosion in growth, with the number of individuals registered with the service quadrupling. Houston had expressed dissatisfaction, stating that although 100 million users is quite a bit, it was nowhere near where it could be.

Code hints Microsoft may add direct music playback to SkyDrive

Code hints Microsoft may add music playback to SkyDrive

Microsoft has been busy streamlining SkyDrive to make the most of our time in the cloud, but it hasn’t yet cut out the middleman for audio playback; if a song wasn’t obtained through a channel like Xbox Music, it won’t play online in Microsoft’s universe. LiveSide has made some code discoveries suggesting the storage service could at least partly remedy the problem with a web-based music player. We don’t know much of how it would work, although the presence of interface elements hints that Microsoft is at least committed to development. The real dilemma is an absence of clues as to when (and if) playback will ever go live — and there’s nothing that would reveal whether or not SkyDrive is the heart of an upcoming option to upload personal tracks for Xbox Music streaming. If the music player mentions reflect more than just experimentation, however, the Redmond team may soon have a more direct answer to the likes of Amazon Cloud Player or Google Music.
