S Cloud spotted on Galaxy Note II, reveals Dropbox integration (video)

S Cloud spotted on Galaxy Note II, reveals Dropbox integration (video)

We’re still recovering from the onslaught of goodies shown off at IFA 2012, but there’s one thing we didn’t notice while perusing Samsung’s gadgetry. The team at German site BestBoyZ discovered S Cloud in the settings menu of the Note II, which included the option to sync user data with Dropbox. Apparently, Samsung reps didn’t have much to say on the matter, and BestBoyZ believe that’s because it’s not quite working yet (we’re willing to agree, given the various delays). It’s looking like the feature might be ready in time for the Note II’s launch, which ties in nicely with the 50GB of free Dropbox storage you’ll snag if you pick one up. Owners of other Samsung gear needn’t be disappointed though, as it’s suggested that S Cloud integration will be part of the Jelly Bean upgrades expected soon. We’ve embedded the reveal vid below, and don’t worry if you can’t speak German — you’ll still get the gist.

Western Digital My Book VelociRaptor Duo Thunderbolt HDD

Western Digital My Book VelociRaptor Duo Thunderbolt HDD

Western Digital has proudly introduced the new My Book VelociRaptor Duo dual-drive storage system that supports the Mac OS X operating system. The device is powered by two 1TB 10,000 RPM WD VelociRaptor drives and two Thunderbolt ports. The Western Digital My Book VelociRaptor Duo has the ability to transfer 22GB full-length HD movies in less than 65 seconds, 2000 5MB pictures in less than 33 seconds and over 500 5MB songs in less than 8 seconds. Western Digital VelociRaptor Duo is an extreme Thunderbolt HDD

The Western Digital (WD) VelociRaptor name originally came from WD’s line of high-performance hard drives which are pro-summer/enthusiast version of drives typically used in servers etc. Instead of rotating at 7200rpm, those drives could spin at 10,000rpm, which made data seek times much better.

The Western Digital VelociRaptor Duo is an external Thunderbolt case that contains two such drives, and the combined maximum capacity is 2TB (2x1TB).  Each VelociRaptor Duo box has additional Thunderbolt connectors so that users can “daisy-chain” drives to add additional capacity or simply connect more Thunderbolt devices. WD Unveils Crazy Fast Velociraptor Duo External Hard Drive

I don’t know why but I always want to have the fastest components in my computer that I can find. It’s not like I can drag race my computer against the guy across the street in some sort of grudge match, but I still have this unnatural desire for the fastest computer hardware around. Western Digital has unveiled a new external hard drive that really speaks to the computer geek in me.

The drive is called the My Book Velociraptor Duo and it packs a pair of 10,000 RPM 1 TB hard drives. That gives you data access speeds similar to what you’d find in an external hard drive with SSDs inside while getting 2 TB of total capacity. The speed isn’t only from the 10000 RPM internal drives either.

Western Digital also fits the external storage device with a pair of Thunderbolt ports. The company says that the external storage device is capable of real-world data transfer rates of up to 400 MB/s. The dual Thunderbolt ports allow you to daisy chain other devices to get even more storage. The system also supports RAID 0 and RAID 1. All this performance isn’t cheap, though – the Velociriraptor Duo lists for a penny less than $900(USD), though it’s likely to retail for a little bit less.

AcerCloud blows into Europe, bringing remote access to your (Acer) laptop

Acer Cloud

We took a good look at the AcerCloud service early this year and its companion Android handset, the award-winning CloudMobile phone. Now, Acer has launched a beta service in Europe, so buyers of the company’s new laptops and desktop machines over there will be able to try it out for themselves. To get it working, you can install the portal app onto your Android device and Acer PC, allowing you to download images and other files between the pair. You can also send files back to your computer for backup, expanding the storage of your smartphone or slate through your own mini-cloud. Everything will be synced through the service, which will store the data if your home machine isn’t fired up — and transfer everything when it’s alive again. There’s no word on when users will be able to partake stateside, but if you’re across the pond, hit the source link for the mobile app.
