Lieutenant Calf, You Got New Legs!

A poor calf was literally left out in the cold this winter and suffered frostbite to both of its hind legs. The frostbite was so severe that the calf lost both the back legs to surgical amputation. A person stepped up and adopted the calf rather than see the animal put down and turned into steak.

Rather than having a calf that lay around all the time, the new owner of the animal spent about $40,000 to have a pair of prosthetic legs made for it. To attach the legs to the calf, bovine surgeons had to remove a couple inches of bone to make a tissue pad.

The hooves of the legs are made from titanium and urethane. The connecting hardware is made from titanium and carbon fiber, and it has taken surgeons at Texas A&M University about a year to develop the prosthetics.

X-Mans Art Show: Children of the Coloring Book

10 years ago, pop artist Brandon Bird found an X-Men coloring & activity book filled with awful sketches at a dollar store. Brandon eventually decided to turn it into a collaborative work with his fellow artist friends. But instead of simply coloring its pages, they each picked a sketch in the book and made original art based on it.

Brandon presented the artworks under the appropriate name X-Mans earlier this month at the Nucleus gallery in L.A. Here are some of the pieces:

As you can see, most of the pieces are lighthearted – Nate Carle’s Fourclops looks like it actually came from the sketchbook – but a couple of them made the best out of the source material, such as Amy Dixon’s Grey’s Anatomy and Erin Pearce’s Magneto Hates Birthdays.  Have your browser wear Cerebro and head to Brandon’s website to see all of X-Mans. Brandon is also selling prints of some of the pieces on his online shop.

Star Wars Toilet Decals: Stay on Target!

We have seen some cool stickers designed to stick inside your toilet on a few occasions. One of the coolest was the Sarlacc stickers that made your toilet look like the monster that ate Boba Fett. Some new and much simpler stickers have surfaced for Star Wars fans that want to pee on something.

The stickers – available from LilMrsCrafty – include a Darth Vader helmet, TIE fighter, and a stormtrooper. If you put these in a toilet on the Death Star, none of the stormtroopers could hit them.

If you ever wanted to take a whiz on Vader, here is your chance. You can also show Vader your fully functional Brown Star. See what I did there?

Star Wars Macarons: That’s No Moon, It’s a Delicious French Pastry!

These Star Wars-themed macarons by Semi Sweet Designs look totally delicious! Om nom nom nom. Apparently, macarons are hard to make, but I know that when you bake these cookie sandwiches correctly, they taste heavenly. Things get even better when it is decorated in a Star Wars theme. Everything is better with Star Wars.

Semi Sweet Designs studied some videos to make sure they had the technique and then got to work making three different macarons featuring a chocolate Chewbacca, and almond and vanilla R2-D2, and the lemon and vanilla Death Star. They came out looking perfect.

They look great. If they taste half as good as they look, those are some delicious treats.

Princess Leia Falls for Indiana Jones

I always get a kick out of mashups of films that I loved as a kid. I really like this new work from artist James Hance. He has taken Princess Leia complete with her giant hair buns and put her in a picture with Indiana Jones.

It is cool to see the wrong character put with his love interest from the Star Wars movies. The art is said to be a work in progress, but it already looks complete to me. In fact, it looks realistic enough to have been some sort of mistake at a movie poster printing factory.

Hance is the same guy who melded Adventure Time with Doctor Who in the past.

Wicked Lasers Flashtorch Flashlight: Yep, It Also Sets Stuff on Fire

Wicked Lasers has updated its Flashtorch flashlight to be lighter and longer lasting than ever before. The company claims that the Flashtorch is the world’s brightest and most powerful flashlight. I can’t verify that, though I wouldn’t be surprised if the claims hold up. After all, the Flashtorch is so bright that it can easily start a fire.

The Flashtorch has a 100W halogen lamp that emits 4,100 lumens and lasts up to 2,000 hours, a battery lasts up to 40min. per charge, and a heat-resistant lens and reflector that adjust the beam from a wide floodlight to a focused firestarter.

Put on gloves and goggles  and head to Wicked Lasers to order the Flashtorch. It’s guaranteed to burn through $200 (USD) before you even turn it on.

Guy Making a List of Every Video Game Ever Made

Have you ever wondered how many video games there have been? And if you have, have you wanted to view a list of them? It would probably take several days to read. Well, Pastebin user Data_Baser is making a list – and hopefully checking it twice – to finally find an answer.

gamemagnify

Once he finishes compiling this impossibly huge list, we will know exactly how many video games have been made throughout history. He’s been working with some folks over on 4chan to create the list and he will include console, arcade, PC, mobile and browser-based games.

It is already at 43,000 entries and climbing. It will be interesting to see how this all ends. The list, so far, can be found below, or over on Pastebin.

Printoo Modular, Thin & Flexible Electronics: Diet PCB

Microcontrollers and other electronics components have been getting smaller and cheaper. A company called Ynvisible proves that these parts can be made much thinner as well. The company recently launched a Kickstarter fundraiser for Printoo, a set of modular electronics that are paper-thin and flexible.

Ynvisible partnered with other electronics manufacturers to create an open source Arduino-compatible platform. The company has skinny versions of everything from a microcontroller board to a battery.

Aside from finalizing the design of its flexible boards and lining up suppliers, it looks like the company has finished much of the work even before they set up the fundraiser.

Pledge at least $45 (USD) on Kickstarter to get a Printoo kit as a reward; higher pledges have more robust kits as rewards.

Ghostman Augmented Reality System Lets You Learn from a Teacher’s Perspective

Watching a master at work is a great way to acquire motor skills. But it’s not that easy to keep an eye on someone else while looking at your own movements to see if you’re doing it right. A proof of concept system called Ghostman helps you do both simultaneously, thanks to augmented reality glasses.

Ghostman was designed by researchers from the University of Tasmania and the University of Washington, led by Dr. Winyu Chinthammit. Using two pairs of Vuzix Wrap 920AR glasses, Ghostman overlays a teacher’s hand over the student’s own vision. The student can then see the demonstration from his teacher’s point of view while his own hand is also in full view.

In their limited tests, Dr. Chinthammit and his colleagues found out that teaching a new motor skill through Ghostman is as effective as going about it with an instructor sitting by your side. This means it could one day be possible for instructors to effectively teach motor skills through a remote session. Although I think it would also be beneficial if the teacher could see from his student’s perspective as well to help him provide feedback.

Come on doc, we all know a pottery lesson would’ve been more appropriate. Head to Hindawi to read the researchers’ paper on Ghostman.

Chocolate Toothpaste: Brush with Dessert

If only we could have had chocolate toothpaste when I was a kid. Well, the important thing is that they have it now. Theodent has a new line of fluoride-free, chocolate-flavored toothpaste. And this chocolate flavor isn’t just a novelty.

theodent chocolate toothpaste 620x590magnify

Theodent’s toothpaste formula contains a patented substance that is actually obtained from the cacao plant that gives it its chocolatey flavor. It’s called rennou, and don’t worry, it is safe to eat. Naturally, you want something safe in a chocolate toothpaste, because kids are going to be tempted to gulp this stuff down when they brush.

Theodent Classic is only $10, while the extra-strength version Theodent 300 is priced at a wallet-busting $100 a tube. Damn, those are dentist prices.
