When closed up and stowed, these tongs look like Darth Vader’s red lightsaber. They’re perfect for flipping over your meaty foes on the grill, and even make the proper lightsaber sound effects too.

[SPOILER] Bravely Default Easter Egg Uses Konami Code

I love Bravely Default. It’s one of the best RPGs I’ve played in a long time. I had so much fun playing it that I made a mini-guide for a certain part of the game. So I headed to GameFAQs, and while I was figuring out how to write my guide I came upon this neat Easter Egg for the game. I can’t describe the trick without spoiling a major feature of the game though. You’ve been warned.

bravely default konami code easter eggmagnify

Here’s your final warning. SPOILERS INCOMING! Okay, Amigo-bot, here’s the trick. As you know, the game’s Start screen has four main options. Normally the fourth option will only be unlocked if you get the game’s “true ending”, which needless to say takes a long time to obtain. But YouTuber Shmiam found out that you can temporarily unlock that option by entering the Konami Code. More specifically, at the Start Screen, point the cursor to the fourth option then enter the code. The contents of that option are shown in Shmiam’s video as well, so you might want to stop watching after he demonstrates the trick.

I already got the fourth option before I found out about this trick, so I can’t verify if it works. That said, when I tried it I also heard the exact same sound effect that Shmiam got. Switch to the Browser Job and head to GameFAQs if you want further assurance that the code works.

Cloudwash Smart Washing Machine Prototype: Shut Up and Take My Laundry!

Washing clothes shouldn’t be rocket science, but you’d be forgiven for thinking that when you look at the controls of modern washing machines. So when cloud services company Berg set out to create a prototype for an Internet-connected washing machine, they didn’t want to smarten it up just so it can tweet which socks you prefer. Berg knew that smart doesn’t mean needlessly complex.

Berg’s Cloudwash prototype is built on four premises. The first one is that, for all the intricate settings on conventional washing machines, most users only ever use a handful of them. That’s why Cloudwash only has a few, easy to understand physical controls.

The first set of options lets you choose from your three most used wash settings. You’ll then use its companion app if you want or need to tweak these settings. Which brings us to Berg’s second premise: the early examples of smart appliances are not really smart.

Berg noticed that the current crop of Internet-connected appliances mainly have two ways of distributing controls or options. Some smart appliances have all of their controls thrown to a mobile app, rendering the appliance nearly useless if you don’t have a mobile device on hand. On the other end are appliances that come with a touchscreen or mobile device tacked on, with few if any remote controls.

Berg opted for a middle ground. The Cloudwash app has all of the controls and options so you can control everything remotely if you wish, but the most used controls are also on the machine itself.

Berg’s third premise is that Internet-connected appliances should be able to adapt to your lifestyle. That should be part of why they’re called “smart.” Thus the second set of controls on Cloudwash lets you delay the washing machine’s final rinse.

This can also be adjusted through the mobile app, so you don’t have to hurry home to take out your clothes before they get wrinkled. It’s about making the machine adjust to you and not the other way around.

The third set of options includes a button to toggle notifications, but the other two buttons are more interesting. They’re manifestations of Berg’s fourth premise: subsidized washing machines might become a thing, just like what Nestle did to coffee machines with Nespresso.

See, you can set the two buttons to either send a reminder on your phone that your conditioner or detergent is running low. Or you can use them to make one-click purchases. Berg thinks that online retailers like Amazon or laundry product manufacturers may be willing to give away free machines or at least subsidize them to reel in customers.

Check out Berg’s case study on the Cloudwash for more information. I think its mobile app is a bit over designed and cluttered – there’s a freaking washing machine calendar, and it still uses vague washing machine terminology. I also don’t want a future where my appliances are cheap but will only work with a certain brand of detergent or brand of popcorn (because what else will it ultimately lead to?). But I do love the attempts to make machines more user-friendly and flexible.

Full-Size TARDIS Replica Made from Cardboard

The Doctor Who merchandising machine has reached down bestowed us with yet another piece of swag. A new product is coming your way that is really cool and reminds me a bit of the box forts we made as kids. Rather than having to get out the markers and a steak knife to customize your own cardboard creation, all you have to do is put this one together.

tardis boxmagnify

The finished product is a life-size TARDIS replica. According to the product description, the cardboard TARDIS measures 55″ square and stands 180″ tall. That second dimension doesn’t sound right though. That would make the guy in the picture a 10-foot-tall giant. Also, this TARDIS isn’t any bigger on the inside. It’s exactly as it looks on the outside – minus the thickness of the cardboard.

You can pre-order the cardboard contraption from Urban-Collector for $224.99(USD). The estimated release for the cardboard TARDIS is May 2014. This would go very well with your TARDIS cat condo.

Rolls-Royce Shows off Drone Ships That Could Revolutionize Shipping on the Oceans

Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc is touting what it thinks could be the future of shipping on the high seas. The company has been working on a design for drone ships that ditch the crew so they can carry more cargo and cut expenses. The ships would be controlled by sensors and a captain that sits in a remote VR cockpit on land that shows them what they would see standing on the deck of a ship.

rrholdings 620x348magnify

The firm says that the drone ships would not only be cheaper to operate, but they would be safer and less polluting as well. The idea is to get rid of the bridge and all systems that are needed to support a living crew and replace that with more space for cargo.

By eliminating the crew on the ships, the company thinks it could cut 40% of the costs of a cargo shipment right away. The drone ship would have redundant systems like an aircraft and would be able to continually monitor itself to improve efficiency. Supporters of human-crewed vessels say that nothing can replace the eyes and thought processes of humans aboard a ship in the ocean.

The remote-controlled ships could be ready to sail the seas in the next decade.

Mini Museum Contains Tiny Samples of Rare Objects: What is This? A Museum for Ants?

Mobile devices let us look up practically anything we want to know about anywhere and anytime, but there’s nothing like looking at the real deal. Relics and artifacts invoke a sense of wonder and fire up our imagination. Product designer Hans Fex thought of a brilliant way for us to experience that spark anytime and anywhere with his Mini Museums.

mini museum by hans fex 620x465magnify

Hans says he’s wanted to make the Mini Museum since he was seven years-old. He got the idea from his father, a research scientist. In 1970 the elder Fex brought his son some artifacts that he embedded in clear resin, perhaps to protect them from his child’s curious and unsteady hands.

mini museum by hans fex 2 620x456magnify

Now in his forties, Hans has gathered 33 very rare specimens that he’s chopping into tiny bits to share with you. These include a meteorite from the Moon, a T-rex tooth and even a 4,568,200-year old object, the oldest piece of matter ever collected.

Help Hans feed his growing beard. Pledge at least $99 (USD) on Kickstarter to get a Mini Museum as a reward. Pledge at least $230 if you want to get the Mini Museum that has all 33 specimens.

Xbox 360 Controller Dog Leash: Pet Simulator

Instructables Community Manager and avid maker Mike Warren figured out a way to work on his gaming skills while walking his dog. He gutted a broken Xbox 360 controller and turned it into a large but somewhat practical dog leash.

I say the mod is somewhat practical because Mike replaced one of the gamepad’s rumble motors with a poop bag dispenser.

Check out Mike’s Instructables page to see how he did it. An Instructables commenter suggested hacking the controller’s buttons so that they trigger sound effects, or perhaps make your dog’s collar light up.

For the Lonely: DIY Make-out Pillow

The day that a lot of singles dread has now come and gone. While more and more unattached people choose to go out and spend the night with friends when February 14th rolls around, there are still those who stay home and sulk over their singlehood.

Then there are those who choose to have a little fun with the situation, like Instructables user Emily Grace King. After finding a bunch of CPR dummy mouths in a dumpster by her apartment building, Emily was inspired to create the Make-out Pillow.

kissing pillow 1 620x442magnify

Staying true to its name, it’s a pillow that lonely people can make out with (ew) if they feel the need to, well, make out. While it looks pretty simple, making the Make-out Pillow requires a bit of work.

kissing pillows 620x317magnify

You’ll need a sewing machine (yeah, you gotta work for that kiss!), some scissors, thread, embroidery floss, glue, felt or fabric, pullow stuffing, some cardboard, and of course, the CPR dummy mouth.

Want to make one of your very own? Check out Emily’s Instructables page to see how she did it.

Super Mario Gumball Machine Aquarium: Do Mushrooms Grow Underwater?

Etsy artist H2retrO has created a unique aquarium. This aquarium not only resides inside of a gumball machine, but it is also Super Mario themed. Or at least it’s got a couple of Mario figurines sitting inside it.

mario gumball aquarium 620x709magnify

The downside to this thing is that you can’t put a gold coin in it and get some gum, but the upside is that you have a pretty unique aquarium that will impress your friends. It even lights up. It looks like Mario and Toad are working together to complete the underwater level.

mario gumball aquarium1 620x605magnify

The entire piece stands just over three feet-tall, but the aquarium itself isn’t very big, so if you buy it, I would suggest you only put one small fish inside. You’ll have to get your gum elsewhere.
