The World’s Most Confused Handheld Gaming System

Oh, China. You’re such a great nation, but sometimes we’ve got to call you on your ridiculous reinterpretations of trademarked and copyrighted works from other parts of the world. This handheld gaming console is one such example.

image 620x380magnify

This ridiculously confused PVP Station Light 3000 handheld co-opts imagery from Sony, Nintendo, Rovio and Naughty Dog all in one single package. And having played some of these craptacular systems over the years, I’m going to bet it can’t even play most of the games referenced on its box. Or if it can, it does it very badly.

Actually each can contains a stuffed severed dragon head. It’s already slightly charred, so you don’t need to go Dracarys on it. You can order Canned Dragon Meat from ThinkGeek for $10 (USD).

Legend of Zelda Pizza: A Link to the Pepperoni

It’s dangerous to go alone. Take this. Just make sure that you cut it into Tri-Force shapes. This Legend of Zelda inspired pizza was made by denacem to celebrate the 28th anniversary of the release of Legend of Zelda.

This is the tastiest Legend of Zelda treat you will see all day. You will want to eat it, but you can’t. It’s just an image. It’s also raw, so you’ll get sick.

There, that’s better. Though Link’s hammy face seems to have disappeared into the tomato sauce after baking.

You can’t beat a Link made from green peppers on a pizza. Though he looks kind of mean. It needs another sword just so it can have more bacon. Now I’m hungry again. I really have to stop writing about food. Is it lunch time yet?

Armatix Smart Hand Gun Now for Sale in U.S.

Back in 2010, we first talked about an interesting smart firearm that came from a company called Armatix. That gun was designed to fire only when the person was wearing a watch fitted with an RFID sensor inside. Without the watch on the wrist, the gun isn’t functional. The idea was to keep unauthorized users from being able to use the gun.

The Armatix iP1 gun was expected to hit the market in 2010 at a price of nearly $10,000. Well, fast forward four years, and the gun is now available in the US with the Oak Tree Gun Club in LA selling it. Plus, the cost has come down substantially.

The gun is a .22 caliber weapon with a 10-round capacity. The watch and gun are sold separately. The gun sells for $1399, while the watch, which is required to use the gun, sells for another $399. If there’s any real downside to the gun, it’s that a .22 caliber isn’t what most people want for home defense or concealed carry.

BigRep One 3D Printer is Big Enough to Print Furniture: 3DXL

It’s not the world’s largest 3D printer, but the BigRep One still dwarfs most of the consumer 3D printers available today. With a build volume of 1.3 cubic meters, it’s big enough to print furniture in one piece.

BigRep One can print using a variety of filaments, including the wood-infused Laywood and the sandstone-like Laybrick. Here’s a side table made with the printer:

Sadly most of us would have to print a huge stack of money to afford the BigRep One, because each unit will set you back $39,000 (USD). Contact BigRep to order.

OpenKnit Clothing Printer: Programmer Wear

The burgeoning small scale 3D printing industry is focused on producing plastic or metal objects. A small team of makers led by Gerard Rubio hopes to turn the spotlight on a more practical material: fabric. The OpenKnit is a work-in-progress open source printer that automatically knits thread to create clothing based on digital templates.

The printer is powered by an Arduino Leonardo and can control three needles at the same time. Like the pioneering RepRap, the OpenKnit printer itself will have parts that can be 3D printed to further save on costs. Gerard says the printer should cost around $750 (USD) to build.

Aside from the printer itself, OpenKnit also has a companion program called Knitic that can be used to design clothes. Knitic was developed by Mar Canet and Varvara Guljajeva, who used their experience from hacking old electronic knitting machines to create a user-friendly program for designing clothes. Finally, there’s Do-Knit-Yourself, a “virtual wardrobe” where people can share their designs. Think of the site as the Thingiverse of clothing.

Obviously, all three parts of the OpenKnit project are still in their infancy, and the clothes that have come out of it are not much to look at. But I hope the project takes off and democratizes fashion, because that industry badly needs a wake up call. Check out the OpenKnit website to learn more about the printer. Makers should head to Gerard’s Github page to find out how they can replicate the device.

“SMS” iPhone Case Sends Smoke Signals Instead of Text Messages

A lot of phone cases incorporate features that give users added convenience. This particular case, however, takes a couple of steps backward.

iPhone Case Smoke SignalDubbed by artist/hacker Dennis DeBel as the S.M.S. or “smoke messaging service” case, the bulky case can be used to send smoke signals at the push of a button. It has a chamber where lamp oil is stored, which is heated when the button is pressed. This, in turn, produces the wisps of smoke when you’re ready to send a message of the smoky kind.

The SMS Case is just a concept design for now, considering the fact that, well, they’re incredibly bulky and you can’t really translate smoke into actual messages. But it’s still pretty neat, though.

75,000+ People Are Playing a Game of Pokémon: MMOkémon

Pokémon are elusive creatures. If you want to catch them all, you better bring an army. That must be their thinking on Twitch.tv, where right now more than 75,000 people are in a chatroom controlling a single game the Game Boy version of Pokémon Red.

twitch pokemon 620x368magnify

The users are entering controller input into the chat window (up, down, left right, B, A, select, start) and that is how they are playing the game. It’s just a bunch of crazy chaos. Scroll down or hit the link and watch it for a while. It is strangely engrossing.

Watch live video from TwitchPlaysPokemon on www.twitch.tv

I just watched for several minutes as they tried to enter a name and got nowhere. Clearly, they are never going to catch them all.

Rekindle Candle Rekindles the Candle, Not the Flame

Candles are one of those things you can recycle again and again (in theory), because they’re basically just made from melted wax and nothing more. I say “in theory” because most people don’t really bother to re-melt and mold melted wax after a single use.

rekindle candle 620x348magnify

However, that might all soon change with designer Benjamin Shine’s Rekindle candle holder. It’s basically a two-tiered candle holder that has a chamber at the bottom. As the candle melts, the melted wax that doesn’t burn up drips slowly into that chamber.

When the candle has been used up, you can remove the cover and re-use the candle at the bottom. Repeat the cycle over and over again, and you might not have to buy another candle for a very long time.
