Harmonix and Hidden Path at Work on Musical FPS Game Called Chroma

If you ever played Rock Band, you might recognize the name Harmonix. Harmonix is the company behind that game, and word is that the company is working on a new music game. But time the game is said to also be a first-person shooter.

harmonix fps 620x320magnify

Harmonix is working with developers at Hidden Path, the company behind Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The musical FPS game is called Chroma, and it’s expected to be a free-to-play title built using the Unreal engine. Though chances are “free to play” includes some sort of paid upgrades.

The game promises to shape and evolve itself based on the music it plays. The landscape will change with the music and players able to move with the rhythm will get bonuses. That means players in tune with the music will be able to jump higher and run faster. It sounds very strange, but it also sounds kind of cool.

If they can pull this off it will certainly be different from any other FPS games out there. There is no word on when the game will be complete, you can sign up to participate in the Chroma closed alpha here.

Forensics Reveal the Face of Crystal Head Vodka

You know how forensic artists are. They can’t pass up an opportunity to take a skull and see what it looked like when it was alive. They might even be curious to see what the skull-shaped bottle of Crystal Head Vodka looked like, had it been living. Forensic artist Nigel Cockerton was just this curious.

So he got a bottle of Crystal Head Vodka and went to work, wondering just what that laughing face would look like covered with muscle, eyes, and skin.

The results are kind of what you would expect. It looks like a drunk guy laughing his ass off.

So now you have a face to think about when you are drinking straight from this bottle. As you drink, you are going to look more and more like this guy too.

Wearable Book Lets You Feel What the Character’s Are Feeling

Read any good books lately? Only the most masterful of storytellers are able to tell a tale that can touch readers and stir their emotions.

girl plugged in 620x416magnify

However, this tale entitled The Girl Who Was Plugged In by James Tiptree Jr. got a little help from MIT. Dubbed as Sensory Fiction, it’s the latest in wearable tech that comes in the form of a book that you can “wear” and strap on to your body via a harness, so you can feel whatever it is the main character is feeling, too. The technology isn’t limited to emotions, as the reader can be made to feel physical sensations like warmth and coldness.

The harness is equipped with LED lights, small heating devices, a vibrating mechanism, and a compression system that tightens or loosens depending on what’s happening in the story.

Wouldn’t it be neat to have a book like this at your local library? Guess it depends on what the book is about.

Doggie Treadmill: Run Spot Run

There’s nothing sadder than a fat dog. It’s bad enough that we American’s need to stuff our faces until we all look like Baron Vladimir Harkonnen from Dune, but it’s even worse that we fatten our animals too. This dog treadmill will help you keep your dog from being a big slob, while you sit by and watch while snacking on your Cheetos.

Military Researchers Working on MRE Pizza Good for Three Years on the Shelf

I’ve never been in the military before, but I know a few people that have been. They have all commented at one time or another how gross most of the MREs (“meals-ready-to-eat”) they have to eat are. Each year researchers at a military lab in Massachusetts put out a survey asking soldiers what they would most like to see in a MRE in the future. The top answer is typically pizza.

mre pizza 3magnify

The researchers have been working on making a MRE pizza for a long time, and it is considered a Holy Grail for food researchers at the lab. The challenge is to create a pizza that will last on the shelf for at least three years with no need to be refrigerated. One reason pizza has taken so long to make it to the battlefield is that the moisture in the cheese and sauce makes the pizza a soggy breeding ground for mold and bacteria.

mre pizza 2magnify

The scientists think they may have finally licked the MRE pizza problem by making tweaks to the acidity of the sauce and other ingredients to stave off bacteria. The researchers also say that using humectants like salt, sugar, and syrups help keep moisture from messing things up.

The result is a prototype pizza that is said to taste like a deep dish pizza with a less crunchy crust. The pizza is still in the prototype stage and hasn’t yet been tasted by soldiers – which will obviously be the true test.

Eterni.me Lets You Live Forever… In Digital Avatar Form

Some people live on in the memories of others, even when they pass on, because of the life they’ve led and the differences that they’ve made on the lives of others. Others may be forgotten, while still others will live on as avatars in the online realm.

The latter is made possible by Eterni.me, a start-up brought about by MIT’s Entrepreneurship Development Program.

Eternmimagnify

It’s essentially a service that learns and creates an online personality for the departed, based on their old chat logs, emails, photos, and social network interactions. A blurb on the site explains:

Eterni.me collects almost everything that you create during your lifetime, and processes this huge amount of information using complex Artificial Intelligence algorithms. Then it generates a virtual YOU, an avatar that emulates your personality and can interact with, and offer information and advice to, your family and friends after you pass away. It’s like a Skype chat from the past.

Marius Ursache, the startup’s Chief Executive, revealed that over 1,300 registrations were received in a span of 24 hours, so there’s certainly an interest in from people interested in being preserved as an electronic avatar.

To say that it is both unusual and creepy is an understatement. You can check out Eterni.me here.

Plotclock Writes the Time by Hand: Useless & Depressing Machine

We’ve seen a handful of unique analog digital clocks, but the Plotclock has to be the most unusual of the bunch. It’s also a metaphor for a dozen sad things. Made by Thingiverse member joo, Plotclock writes the time by hand, then erases what it just wrote so it can write again.

plotclock by joo 620x465magnify

Joo used an Arduino Uno, three servos and 3D printed components to make the clock. Though I strongly suspect that he also added a liter of sighs, a patch of wrinkled skin and some shredded tax forms to the device.

This clock knows life’s a waste of time. Check out joo’s page on Thingiverse for more on the futility of it all.

King’s Assembly Keyboard & Mouse Hybrid Will Have you T-rexin’

We’ve featured a couple of unusual keyboard and mouse hybrid devices, but so far it looks like people like their devices just as they are – separate and not looking like devices you’d use to pilot an alien spaceship. I wonder if Solid Art Labs’ King’s Assembly will fare any better. At the very least it’s the least weird-looking of the bunch.

kings assembly mouse keyboard hybrid by solid art labs 620x465magnify

The King’s Assembly is a pair of devices (a left and a right “hand”) that each have an optical laser sensor, 35 keys with Cherry mechanical keyboard switches (30 in front and 5 near the thumb rest) and an analog joystick. Because you only get 70 keys at most, one of the keys can be set to serve as a modifier. Hold that down and you can access the secondary function of the other keys, giving you a total of 139 key mappings. Speaking of which, each device will have a preset key mapping, but you’ll be able to create new mapping profiles as well.

Each hand can serve as a mouse and keyboard on its own. But if you have both hands you’ll need to link them using the included interconnect cable if you want to use them in tandem. Once they’re linked, your computer will only see one mouse and one keyboard instead of two of each peripheral. Also, each hand has its own USB cable, but when they’re linked you only need to connect one of their USB cables to your computer. This means you can connect a pair of hands to two computers at once.

kings assembly mouse keyboard hybrid by solid art labs 2 620x465magnify

How will the two mice act as one? The King’s Assembly’s built-in Atmel microcontroller will average the input from the hands’ optical sensors and send that as one signal to your computer. That may sound weird, but we’re used to using just one of our hands to move our mice anyway, so that shouldn’t be a big problem. You’ll also be able to tweak the sensitivity of each hand’s sensor separately or even disable a hand’s mouse input altogether.

Finally, the joysticks will be useful in playing video games, but you can also use them as scroll wheels.

Pledge at least $110 (USD) on Kickstarter to get one King’s Assembly hand as a reward; pledge at least $200 and you get a pair. I think I’m good with my low-tech keyboard and mouse for work and daily use, but I can see myself using these for gaming.

Scent Rhythm Watch Lets You Smell What Time It Is

Can you tell the time based on scent alone? People encounter different smells throughout the day. From the smell of freshly-brewed coffee to car exhaust or printer toner, it’s all in a day’s work for some.

Hardware designer and physical computing lecturer Aisen Caro Chacin stripped away the specifics and went with common and general smells for her concept watch called Scent Rhythm.

scent rhythm watch 1 620x736magnify

The wristwatch is unusual in the sense that it does away with hour and minute hands in favor of a four-chambered timepiece that emits distinct smells at certain times of day to indicate the current time – or rather, the current time period.

Scent Rhythm 620x413magnify

The watch is attuned to a person’s circadian rhythm, or internal body clock, which regulates the 24-hour cycle of the body’s biological processes. Correspondingly, the watch keeps track of time in four segments of six hours each, and triggers the related scent emitter. From 6 am to midday, or the rise period, the Scent Rhythm emits whiffs of coffee with caffeine.

Scent Rhythm isn’t for sale, although design files and its parts list are available on Aisen’s website, in case you want to find out more about its inner workings and how it was made.
