Ubi Voice-activated Computer: Home-Based Siri

One of the cool technologies from the Iron Man movies is the computerized take on the Avengers’ butler Jarvis. The Ubi computer can’t be sarcastic and exchange witty banter, but it might be the closest we can get to Tony Stark’s A.I. servant.

ubi voice activated computer

Ubi – short for Ubiquitous Computer – is an Android 4.0-based personal assistant device that docks into a power outlet. Similar to Apple’s Siri, you can ask Ubi to search the Internet for information, call someone on your contacts list, record memos, set alarms etc. But the Ubi has a much greater potential than its iPhone-constrained cousin, mainly because of its open platform and its hardware (which might allow for it to be sarcastic and witty some day.)

The Ubi has an 800MHz ARM CPU, 1GB RAM, RF, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, temperature, humidity, air pressure and ambient light sensors. It also has more ways to communicate compared to Siri. Aside from its synthesized voice, Ubi also has different colored lights and can even be set to send emails and text messages.

Pledge at least $189 (USD) on its Kickstarter fundraiser to reserve a Ubi unit. Now someone needs to do a Kickstarter project for Tony Stark’s armor.

Chef Cui Robot Slices Noodles in China, Noodle Slicers Union Revolts

It’s a tough job, but somebody has to slice all of those noodles in China, and Chef Cui is taking on the task. This noodle-slicing robot was developed by Cui Runguan, a Chinese restaurateur and it is now being mass-produced and sold in China.
chinese noodle robot
He slices noodles into boiling water and that’s it. The robot has no fancy bells and whistles. Although it does light up for some reason. Maybe to slice noodles at night. This might actually be cheaper for restaurants to purchase instead of employing humans – assuming that there’s some worker standing around whose only job is to cut up noodles all day.

These robots cost about $2,000(USD), while the average worker makes about $4,700 a year. Too bad for the workers. There goes another job that humans used to do.

miraDry Zaps Your Pits to Stop Sweating

Sweating is part of the summer. No matter where you are, especially with the heatwaves of this year, you’ve probably sweat quite a bit over these last few months. If you tend to sweat a lot from your pits, and would like it to stop soaking your clothes, you could always microwave them so that they completely stop sweating.

miradry sweat procedure dry

miraDry uses microwave energy to zap your armpits and kill off 22,000 to 30,000 sweat glands in that area, reducing the amount of sweat that you generate when you get hot. It’s supposed to work in 90% of patients and reduce sweating by 82%. The effect is supposed to last for a year, but you’ll need a couple of sessions for this to work well.

Aside from evaporating your sweat glands, it will also evaporate some of your cash as this procedure costs $3,000. For some reason, it doesn’t sound like a good idea to mess with you body’s biological processes this way. What happens if you overheat? Sweating is a nature’s way of cooling us down.

R2-D2 Beverage Dispenser Serves the Drinks You Are Looking for

This little droid may not look like much, but he’s fulled to the brim. With booze. Or whatever other beverage you choose. This R2 unit has electronic Super Soaker parts inside and here, he is filled with blue gatorade.
r2 drink dispenser
Due to the unfortunate placement of his spigot, it actually looks like the little droid is relieving himself right into your cup. That’s a great image to consider while you are drinking up. Inside is the Super Soaker pump and a water bottle to store liquid. R2′s body was one of those big protein drink mix containers. Its creators explain “After spraying it white and masking off the entire thing with blue painter’s tape, the shapes for the blue designs were cut out and painted. Half of a foam sphere from the hobby shop was used to form the dome.”

Pretty cool, but I’m glad we never saw R2 relieve himself in the movies. I didn’t know droids peed blue, though, so you learn something new every day.

Vending Machine Dishes out Dishes

I’ve seen some wacky vending machines over the years, and there’s no indication there’s an end in sight to the world’s obsession with buying inappropriate stuff out of machines. In this particular case, we have a vending machine that dispenses dishes.

dish vending machine

Why, you may ask would you do this? Well, this machine isn’t loaded with fragile Bone China. It’s actually filled with Corelle dishes which are designed to be chip resistant. Hence, this was actually part of a guerilla marketing stunt to show off how durable these plates are.

I’m guessing the machine has one of those foam pads at the bottom like they have in machines loaded with glass bottles filled with liquids. Though It would be pretty impressive if it doesn’t. Even more impressive would be a bottom tray loaded with concrete and nails sticking out of it, though I’d assume that’s not the case here. Regardless, buying a whole set of dishes this way would be a huge pain in the butt, never mind how to carry them home, but at least it gets the marketing point across.

The handset plugs into the 3.5mm jack of mobile phones and has a built-in mic on the cord, along with a on/off and volume dial and a mute button. You can also use it as a speaker, but why do that when you can use it to pretend you’re a detective or a member of the Resistance?

ThinkGeek is the M20, bring $20 (USD). Over and out. 10-11. 12-13. Copy-paste.

Super Mario Spiral Clock: Down the 16-Bit Hole

Every time is Super Mario time with this spiral clock featuring characters and icons from Nintendo’s timeless platformer. You might find it hard to tell the time on this clock because of its pseudo-asymmetrical look. That’s all I see when I look at this thing.

Warp-pipe to Etsy and pay $25 (USD) to get the clock. Seller BackStreet Crafts also sells other geeky clocks and spiral clocks.

Blizzard Launches New Trailer for Mists of Pandaria

Fans of World of Warcraft have been clamoring in anticipation for the next expansion pack for the video game to launch. That expansion pack is called Mists of Pandaria and is set to release on September 25. To help build excitement for the launch of the new expansion pack, Blizzard Entertainment has released a new trailer for the game.

wow panda 1

We’ve seen videos for the expansion previously and Blizzard has announced that Mists won’t be the last expansion pack for the aging MMORPG game. The expansion pack will allow fans of the game to explore a previously hidden area of the game world ruled by kung fu fighting pandas. The panda characters remind me more than a little of Kung Fu Panda – Gee, I wonder why.

Along with the new land, players also get to check out a new character class, the Monk. The new trailer is the opening cinematic from the expansion pack and debuted this week at Gamescom in Germany.

Flexible Starfish Robot Can Camouflage Itself

In November of 2011, we talked a bit about a soft, flexible robot that was powered by compressed air. The Harvard University team that designed that soft and flexible robot is back with an updated version of the same air-powered robot that can camouflage itself. The camouflage properties can allow the robot to blend into its environment.

camo bot

Just like the robot from last year, this soft and flexible bot moves when compressed air is pumped into cylinders in the legs. The camouflage system takes cues from those found in cephalopods such as the octopus and squid. In the current design, dye is pumped through small channels inside the robot to quickly allow it to blend into its environment.

According to the researchers working on the project, cold or hot fluid can also be pumped into the robot to allow it to thermally hide itself from heat sensing cameras. The robot currently uses an external reservoir for the dye, but researchers developing the robot say in the future it could be integrated inside the robots body.

Disney’s Botanicus Interacticus Lets You Play Plant Hero

Not content with turning inanimate objects into touch sensitive interfaces, Disney Research is now developing a noninvasive technology they call Botanicus Interacticus, which turns plants into touch sensitive input devices.

botanicus interacticus by disney research

In simple terms, an electrode is buried into the soil where a plant has taken root. This allows Disney’s researchers to apply a weak current to the plant at multiple frequencies. The use of multiple frequencies helps the researchers identify not just when but also where the plant is being touched. These signals can then be used in a variety of ways – the demo below shows plants being used to play music and video.

Imagine having just a couple of plants inside your room instead of switches. Or perhaps you can make it so your door will only unlock when you touch a nearby plant in a certain way. That sounded wrong, but you get what I mean.
