Beard Cozy Adds Some Hair to Your Drink the Right Way

We’ve all gotten a hair in our drinks at some point, though we probably all reacted differently. (Only the small majority of us hit someone and then was beaten by a group of hoodlums and left to die on the streets. That was me. Not the hoodlums, of course, the guy who almost got killed.) We’ve also probably all spilled a little bit of a drink in our facial hair, which I can assure you populates my face in a gorgeous manifestation of peach fuzz. With the Beard Cozy, you can cover your booze or other canned drink with the beard off of someone else’s face to help maintain the temperature of your beverage! Also, the manliness of your sole.

The Beard Cozy is a manly “mug cozy” for cans, and you should probably pick one up if it’s interesting to you. Also, you should pick up my phone, which I just dropped, and I don’t care if you find it interesting. I hope you find it uninteresting, because it finds you uninteresting you LOVELESS SLUG. “You know this is the last time I’m ever inviting you over, right?” I don’t care, since I just climb through your fire escape and watch you eat anyway.

This was made by Etsy seller armsandink, and you can cheat on me by heading over there, but the Beer Cozies are currently sold out. If you’re looking for more beard-related items, check out the Bearded Ski Mask and the Viking Beard Helmet when you’re prepared to move on.

Superhero Tutus: Get Girls Ready for Batman Ballet

These superhero tutus are pretty adorable and will instantly turn your little girl into a member of the Junior Justice League or Anklebiting Avengers – and that is pretty awesome, because it gets more little girls interested in superheros. Let’s face it, comic books don’t always write women characters all that well, so maybe these tutus will inspire a new generation of female comic book writers several years from now.

Nendo Rootote Bag: For Puppet Shows on the Go

Some multi-purpose things have a lot of alternate uses, and pretty good ones, too, like the shopping bag that doubles as a helmet. Then there’s Nendo’s Rootote Bag, which has a more novel second use, apart from being a bag, it’s also a puppet show.

puppet bag 1
These bags with puppets, with puppets like kangaroos, bears, humans, and dinosaurs, are a concept design by Oki Sato. Unexpectedly, there are many uses that an adult might have with an integrated puppet. For one, it’s instant entertainment for the kids and will keep them quiet, at least for a little while.

Another use for it, although pretty unconventional, is as a glove–so when you spot something you’d rather not touch, well, you can just stick your hand in the puppet and use it as you would a glove (but make sure to wash it thoroughly afterwards.)

If you’re sold on the idea, then you might have to wait a while because they’re not being commercially produced yet.

Make Your E-books Smell Like a Real Book with Paper Passion

Ah, the smell of real honest to god books. There’s nothing quite like it. The smell of a book can instantly transport you back to something amazing that you once read. But sadly you can’t get that smell from E-books. Actually, now you can.
paper passion
Paper Passion will make your reader or tablet smell just like books of old. Hey, you wear perfume or cologne, why shouldn’t your E-reader? Okay it’s really meant for you to wear, but it makes more sense to spray it on your gadget in my opinion. It will set you back $115(USD) for a bottle, packaged in a matching, but unreadable book.

The “new book smell” perfume was commissioned for the Wallpaper magazine Handmade exhibition in Milan. But I have to ask, what about “old book smell”? That smells pretty good too. There’s nothing like the smell of an ancient paperback.

Trackball Game Controller: Stuck Between a PC and a Console

When it comes to FPS gaming, I don’t think anything can top the ol’ mouse and keyboard combo if we’re looking at functionality. The sheer number of keys plus the accuracy of the mouse just can’t be beat. But if we’re talking about comfort, you can’t beat the console’s sidekick, the gamepad. What if there was a controller that combined the best of both worlds?

trackball pc game controller by peter von buskirk

Sadly, Peter Von Buskirk’s Trackball PC Game Controller is not that perfect amalgam. But it is a compromise with potential.  If you’ve used either a gamepad or a trackball then you know what to expect from this concept.

I like the controller a lot, but I have two complaints about it. First of all, why is this only being made for the PC and not for consoles? I think this will benefit not only the fans of the annual Shoot of Shooty: Men of Shooting fps games, but also strategy games and other games that require lots of pointing and browsing, games which are hard to implement on the console partly because of the lack of a mouse.

My second complaint is the location of the trackball. By placing it on the right, it exacerbates the weakness of gamepads – now you’ll have access to even less buttons because your right thumb is making sweet love to that sexy trackball. It would be fine if the left half of the controller had buttons, but there’s still a D-pad there.

Von Buskirk setup a Kickstarter fundraiser for the controller; unfortunately as of this writing he’s only managed to raise about $12,000 (USD) out of his $125,000 goal, with only 8 days remaining to fulfill the quota. You can still pledge for the controller if you want – $36 is enough to reserve a unit – you won’t be charged if the fundraiser doesn’t meet it’s quota anyway so you don’t have anything to lose. I hope Von Buskirk keeps working on his controller even if his fundraiser fails. Maybe he’ll find the perfect compromise someday.

Students Set Record for Human-Powered Helicopter

A team of students at the University of Maryland A. James Clark School of Engineering have been hard at work trying to perfect one of the ideas that many inventors and pioneers of aviation have tried to achieve for many, many decades. That goal is human-powered helicopter flight. The students have set an unofficial flight duration benchmark with their pedal-powered helicopter dubbed the Gamera II.

The team set the unofficial flight duration record on June 20, with a time of 35 seconds. The 30-second flight has to be verified by the National Aeronautic Association and if verified will become the new record superseding the teams previous record of 11.4 seconds set last summer. The team of students is only the third team to achieve human-powered helicopter flight.

The team is vying for $250,000 prize if they can become first team to build a helicopter powered only by person to liftoff and hover for 60 seconds. The helicopter has to attain a height of at least 3 meters at some point during the 60-second flight and stay within a ten square meter area for the duration of the flight. You can check out the video of the June 20 flight above.

An Ear Within an Ear: Earception

We’ve all heard about the third eye; but have you ever heard of the third ear? And the fourth ear that follows? If you haven’t, then you’re about it. And let me just say, they’re probably not what you expected.

Ear EarringIt’s not some weird ability or anything. It’s basically a pair of earrings fashioned in the shape, color, and form of a human ear. They’re made from Super Sculpey clay attached to stainless steel earring studs.

These are the unique creations of London-based artist Percy Lau, who has put these quirky and somewhat creepy earrings up for sale on her Etsy shop. Aside from ears, she’s got all sorts of jewelry like necklaces and rings featuring ears other human body parts, like mouths and men’s wieners (for lack of a better word), up for grabs.

The Little Third Ear earrings retail for £26 (~$41 USD) a pair.

Ancient Turtles Died Getting Their Freak on

Bowww-chica-boww-bowww. Scientists discovered fossils this month of ancient turtles that shows several mating pairs that went out in epic style. I imagine it went down like this, girl turtle shouts “OMG we are sinking!” Guy turtle says, “So what?” Scientists discovered the fossilized remains of nine mating pairs of an extinct turtle called Allaeochelys crassesculpta.

turtle style

These turtles died in the act of procreating and were discovered in the Messel Pit in Germany. This particular location was once the volcanic crater lake in a wet tropical environment. The location was used as a mine in the past for the oil in the shale located there. However, it has since become one of the most important sites in the world for understanding what the environment was like in the Eocene era between approximately 56 million and 34 million years ago.

Other fossils discovered in the area include early horses, reptiles, primates, honeybees, giant ants, birds, and bats. The scientists speculate that the copulating 47 million-year-old turtles died when they sank into the poisonous depths of the lake. This is scientifically important because no vertebrates have been found in a mating state before.

Stair Rover Skateboard Ready to Conquer Flights of Stairs

Grinding down flights of stairs isn’t always easy when you are on a skateboard, so Po-Chih Lai decided that skateboards could be improved so that they would have no problem going down steps.

Stair Rover skateboard tackles stairs

The Stair Rover skateboard uses extra pivoting trucks with two wheels on each side to follow the contour of stairs, allowing the board to ride down smoothly. While the video shows a skateboarder using the Stair Rover successfully, I wonder if it has enough ground clearance for all kinds of stairs. Nevertheless, it looks like it works well on a variety of bumpy surfaces.

For now, the Stair Rover is just a working prototype. There’s no word if it will ever be mass produced, but I can think of people who wouldn’t mind having the extra wheels that they can thrash down stairs.
