Razer Project Christine Modular Computer: Puzzle PCs

Now I know what you’re thinking. Most personal computers available today are already modular. That’s true, but what Razer wants to do is to make swapping computer components as easy as replacing the batteries on your remote control.

Project Christine has a base station with a number of slots with proprietary connectors. To build your PC, you just plug in the components to the base. But instead of dealing with fragile chips and odd-looking doodads, Project Christine’s CPU, RAM, GPU, storage drives and other parts will each have its own container.

Each container will be labeled and it will be able to connect to any slot or slots on the base station. No cables, no fragile connectors and no need to figure out which part goes where. In other words, the modules work like USB devices. Project Christine will also have an LED touchscreen that shows the status of its modules.

This means even non-techies can assemble, maintain and customize their own rigs. If you want more storage, then fill the slots with storage drives. Project Christine can have up to five storage drives, one SSD and four HDDs, with the latter configurable to a RAID 5 setup. If you want multiple GPUs, by all means slot them in. The computer can have up to a quad-SLI setup for its graphics cards. Same goes for repairs. Busted power supply? Swap it out. No need to open a dusty case.

The tradeoff here is probably going to be the price of the components, especially if Razer monopolizes the distribution of the modules. But even though it has not released any estimates, the company has a proposal to make upgrading Project Christine easy on the wallet: a subscription service. Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan mentioned this idea in his interview with Gamespot. Skip to 4:00 in the video below to him talk about it.

Subscription-based hardware? I can’t decide if that’s brilliant or stupid. Will it also cover repairs? How fast will Razer release module versions of computer parts? Do upgrades to computer parts even come at a steady pace? What if you subscribe and nothing awesome comes out in a year?

I do however love the idea of a foolproof yet infinitely upgradeable computer, and I get what Razer is doing here. It’s taking a page from Apple’s books: make beautiful and easy to use hardware, then charge a premium for it and control the upgrade path.

Upgrade your browser and head to Razer for more on Project Christine.

Tobii & SteelSeries EyeX Eye Tracker: Eyeballs as Trackballs

Tobii’s eye-tracking technology continues to make its way to mainstream devices. We’ve seen it work with laptops, arcade machines and Windows 8 tablets, and now Tobii has partnered with SteelSeries to release the EyeX, an eye-tracking accessory meant to work with PC games.

tobii steelseries eyex gaze tracker 3 620x313magnify

In case you’re not familiar with Tobii’s technology, its eye tracker uses microprojectors to beam near-infrared light to the users’ eyes. Then the trackers’ sensors analyze the reflections of that light along with the user’s facial features to accurately detect where he’s looking.

tobii steelseries eyex gaze tracker 2magnify

In the demo below, Tobii shows three ways that eye-tracking can be used to augment StarCraft II. First is the ability to move the view to a particular location by looking at an enlarged view of the mini-map (i.e. a map). Second is the ability to center the view to the point where the user is looking, and finally the ability to order units where to move, attack and more just by looking at the target. Skip to around 2:45 in the video for the demo:

The EyeX can also be used in e-sports broadcasts and to help developers improve their game by showing where a player is looking as he’s playing. Skip to around 12:30 in the video below to see that function in action:

As you can see the hardware seems quite capable, but it’s not going to succeed if developers don’t integrate it – and integrate it well– into their games.

Tobii & SteelSeries will release EyeX developer kits this year for $195 (USD), but for a limited time they can be bought for a steep discount: $95 for US customers and €75 for non-US customers. Just enter the promo code ‘CES2014′ on Tobii’s online shop when prompted. As with its tablet incarnation, I can see the EyeX being a boon not just for creating better or new ways to play games, but to help the disabled play conventional games as well. I hope developers and hardware hackers will explore that possibility too.

Scientists Levitate Objects Using Ultrasound Waves

Behold witchcraft! Some crazy mages who call themselves scientists are making stuff levitate using ultrasound waves. Check out the video below. It demonstrates three-dimensional, mid-air acoustic manipulation, aka levitation. Aka witchcraft!

Scientists in Japan are using this technique to suspend small objects in the air with ultrasound waves and they have created an array of wave emitters capable of levitating objects in any direction. Why do these wizards boast of their magic so openly, unafraid of burning at the stake? I have watched the video. I know magic when I see it! I am holding my pitchfork right now!

Seriously, this video just makes my brain hurt. It is amazing. Check out all of the details on their website. This amazing science is the work of professors Yoichi Ochiai, Takayuki Hoshi, and Jun Rekimoto. They have powerful magics indeed.

Dogs Prefer to Poop in Alignment with the Earth’s Magnetic Field

I’ve mentioned my daughter’s little pup Buttercup before. I’ve long suspected that Buttercup is an asshole for various reasons, not the least of which is the fact that she will only poop when someone is outside with her. I’ve often wondered why exactly the dog has to sniff every inch of the yard, twirl in a circle 57 times, hunch over to drop her deuce and then suddenly give up and go sniffing for just the right spot all over again. It turns out it may be solar flares causing the confusion.

dog poopmagnify

Yes, a group of actual scientists have been studying dogs and the direction they poop in. I can only imagine the piles of data they had to go through. Anyway, the researchers have determined that dogs prefer to take care of their poop in alignment with the Earth’s magnetic field. The researchers determined this by watching a group of 70 dogs during 1,893 defecations and 5,582 urinations. Talk about a crappy job.

dog mememagnify

The researchers watched the animals over two years and found that they prefer to drop the bomb in a North-South axis. The researchers also found that during times when the magnetic field was in flux, the dogs would become confused. I wonder if that explains the constant searching for just the right spot? The researchers have no idea why dogs prefer the North-South orientation. They also have no idea why they conducted the study in the first place.

Imma Let You Finish but… Coinye West is the Best Cryptocurrency of the Year

Cryptocurrency is the name given to the variety of virtual currencies out there today. The most popular is certainly Bitcoin. One of the newest is Dogecoin, which started as a joke and then got real. Another new cryptocurrency has been tipped called Coinye West. As you might guess it is a Kanye West themed virtual currency.

coinyemagnify

The catchphrase for Coinye West is “WE AIN’T MININ’, WE PICKIN’.” I don’t really know what that means. The max number of Coinye coins that can be mined is 66,666,666,666 – something that supposedly is a nod to Kanye’s ties to the Illuminati. This is starting to sound like a Dan Brown book.

Vice says that they wanted to talk to the creators of Coinye West, but they wouldn’t talk on the phone. The reason was simple, and quitelogical. The creators said, “[we] want to stay sorta anonymous in case Kanye gets pissed off.”

Teeny Tiny Underwear for Your Smartphones, Because Japan.

Shame on each and every smartphone user for baring it all for the longest time. It’s probably not by choice, because it wasn’t until recently that people discovered that miniature rubber underwear for smartphones actually exist!

smartphone underpants 3 620x536magnify

They’re made by Bandai Japan and come in a variety of patterns and designs. There are undies made for female phones and male phones, so you can mix and match and go with the style that you like best. It might seem strange if you’re holding a phone wearing skivvies covered in hearts if you’re a guy…

The smartphone undies are available in Japan. They’re sold in those plastic capsule vending machines for 200 yen (~$2 USD.) No word on if or when smartphone bras will be available. You wouldn’t want your phone running around topless now, would you?

Stained Glass Octopus Chandelier: Eight Arms to Light You

As far as I’m concerned, your dining room can never have too many tentacles. So if you have an extra few grand, this stained glass octopus chandelier can be yours. It even has detachable limbs that can hold candles and glow.

octopus chandelier 1 620x503magnify

Imagine that Octopus looking down on you are you eat all of your meals, just glowing as if almost ready to attack you and drag you into it’s lair. It was made by Mason Parker of Mason’s Creations. Parker says that each of the tentacles would be about 30 inches-long if they were stretched out, and the lamp itself measures four feet across as it is.

The body and the tentacles can light up separately or all at once. So how menacing it is, is up to you. If you want it, it will cost you $18,000(USD). When you think about it, that’s just $2,250 per tentacle.

My Little Cthulhu: Friendship Is Insanity

An ancient evil has awakened. And he is so adorable! This cute Cthulhu pony comes from Bigshot Toyworks who is developing a Cthulhu-themed My Little Pony named Maddie. She is one of the characters in their upcoming toy and animation series aptly called “Friendship is Maddness.”
Cthulhu ponymagnify

Yes. Yes it is. And cuteness. And insanity. This pony looks a bit like an Ood from Doctor Who as well. This one will not be the only newly-designed toy, but I’m guessing the story centers on her.

Judging by this one, that should be a very cool animation and toy series. I would watch the heck out of that Cthulhu pony show.

CERN Google Street View LEGO Scavenger Hunt: for DisCERNing Virtual Tourists

A few months ago Google rolled out its Street View of some of the facilities at the world famous physics mecca, the European Organization for Nuclear Research aka CERN. The organization decided to have a bit of fun with the virtual tour and set up a scavenger hunt that anyone can join, even CERN employees. It’s basically LEGO Google Street View: the Game.

CERN Google Street View LEGO scavenger hunt 620x465magnify

Right now there are more than 20 LEGO figurines hidden on the two floors of CERN’s Computing Centre. To enter, just go to the CERN Google Street View and find at least three figurines. Be sure to take a screenshot each time you find a figurine. If you can’t see the gorilla minifig in the image above, you probably won’t fare well in the hunt. I’ve found all of them. Okay I’ve only found some of them. Okay just one. Okay I didn’t exactly find the gorilla. CERN gave that one away.

When you’ve found at least three figurines, send your screenshots to TreasureHunt-ComputingCentre@cern.ch. CERN will randomly draw two winners from the valid submissions: one from CERN and one lesser mortal, i.e. the rest of us. The deadline for submission will be on January 31, 2014. Happy hunting!

Batmobile Tumbler iPhone 5/5S Case: Not the Case Your Pants Need

Bandai recently started a line of smartphone cases called Crazy Case, and they’re backing up their words with action. As you can see in Drool’d’s shot, the first Crazy Case is a Tumbler Batmobile toy car that happens to have a gap at the bottom big enough for an iPhone 5 or 5S to fit in.

batman tumbler iphone 5 5s case by bandai 620x315magnify

The officially licensed case has several LEDs, including a mobile Batsignal. Its front wheels slide to the side to give way to the iPhone’s camera and sleep button. It also looks absolutely juvenile. I want one.

You can order the case from Bandai for about $57 (USD). It originally appeared on the Japanese Premium Bandai shop, but that site seems to be down as of this writing. You can check it out at Bandai’s Hong Kong shop too.
