Russians Pull Gigantic Half-Ton Meteorite Fragment from Lake

If you follow the sometimes strange happenings to do with space and science in general, you probably remember back on February 15th of this year when a massive meteorite entered the atmosphere over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk injuring hundreds of people when shock waves created by the meteorite blew windows out of buildings. Russian authorities knew that a large meteorite fragment had broken through the frozen surface of Lake Chebarkul and plunged into the icy depths.

Russian authorities have finally gotten around to searching out that meteorite fragment and what they discovered is incredible. Divers were able to pull a half-ton meteorite fragment out of the frigid depths of the lake. Scientists estimate that the meteorite weighed 10,000 tons when it entered the Earth’s atmosphere.

The large fragment reportedly fractured into three parts during the trip from the bottom of the lake. Once the rock reached the surface and was weighed it was found to tip the scales at 1,255 pounds. Doctor Caroline Smith, the curator of meteorites at the London Natural History Museum, was able to confirm that the rock was a meteorite from visible features seen in images of the fragment such as a fusion crust. The fusion crust forms as the meteorite is traveling through the Earth’s atmosphere as a fireball.

I can’t help but wonder how much the giant meteorite is worth considering even small fragments were selling for significant amounts of money before Russian authorities confiscated them earlier this year.

Stink Yourself Slim Grosses You out So You’ll Lose Weight

It’s easy to gain weight, but it’s exponentially harder to lose it. As you probably already know by now, crash diets won’t work. What does work is cleaning up your diet and adding more exercise into your lifestyle.

Then, of course, there’s Stink Yourself Slim.

stink yourself slim spray 620x372magnify

I wouldn’t say it’s revolutionary, but I would say that it’s definitely unusual.

Stink Yourself Slim is basically a stink bomb in a bottle, but you’re not supposed to use it to prank others. Instead, you’re supposed to spritz some and smell it so you’ll lose your appetite. It’s logical: the less food you eat, the more weight you lose. It was created by Alex Fontaine and was inspired by a real-life event when a skunk crashed a buffet and ruined everyone’s appetite.

It’s being advertised as something that curbs emotional eating as it “works on brain areas that control motivation and behavior.” I’m not sure how stinking up the place affects a person’s motivation, but I will agree that it’ll make them want to eat less.

Stink Yourself Slim is available online for £29.99 (~$49 USD).

Scale FPS Lets You Change Sizes of Objects: Honey, I Shrunk or Blew up the Things!

First-person shooters have come a long way from simple shooting and jumping. And shooting. While conventional shooters are still popular, in recent years we’ve seen first-person shooter games with different kinds of shooting. There are games that let you shoot portals, a game that lets you shoot pictures and even a game that lets you shoot clones of yourself. Now we have Scale, a game where you shoot rays that enlarge or shrink objects.

scale game by cubeheartmagnify

Scale is a game for Windows, OS X and Linux. It’s currently being made by indie developer CubeHeart. The game puts you in an open world and has you manipulating the sizes of objects to solve puzzles and progress. As you’ll see in the video below you can even shrink an entire level. The basic constraint is that you have to “suck the size” out of one object before you can enlarge another.

scale game by cubeheart 2magnify

Perhaps the only thing about Scale that’s crazier than its mechanic is its story. You play a “young physics savant” named Penny Prince, who invented the size-changing gun. Unfortunately she accidentally destroyed the East Coast, leading to the demise of 9,322,591 people (yep, CubeHeart specified that). Also someone took her cat. But with your help Penny may be able to redeem herself and find her cat.

Help CubeHeart enlarge its funding by pledging for Scale on Kickstarter. A pledge of at least $10 (USD) gets you a DRM-free copy of the game as a reward.

Radio Cube 3: Go Home, Rubik, You’re Drunk.

I know there are people out there who can solve a Rubik’s Cube in seconds, but I’m not one of them. I eventually could work my way through the puzzle, but it takes me 10 or 15 minutes on a good day. This puzzle, on the other hand, I’m NEVER solving.

radio cube 3 620x460magnify

What you’re looking at is a fully scrambled version of the Radio Cube 3, a torturous puzzle based on icosahedral geometry. It starts out innocently enough, looking like a Rubik’s Cube with a personality disorder:

radio cube 3 2 620x460magnify

But a few twists and turns later, and it’s a brain-scrambling disaster.

This evil puzzle was created by Shapeways contributor Eitan, and is a cubic transformation of a puzzle called Radiolarian 3 by Jason Smith. Radio Cube 3 looks infinitely more difficult to solve in my opinion, but I’m sure somebody out there will figure out a way to solve it quickly. You’ll notice how Eitan only shows how to scramble the cube in the video, and there’s no indication that he knows how to solve it.

If you’d like to bend your mind, you can grab the main parts needed for it for $150(USD) over on Shapeways. Then you’ll need to pick up 20 flat-head M3 screws at least 12mm long, and a set of stickers. And a sledgehammer. And a trash can.

Blush Radiator is Blue When Cold, Red When Warm: Beating Hearth

A couple of weeks ago we saw a car that changes color when it’s wet, thanks to a coating of thermochromic paint. Icelandic designer Thorunn Arnadottir used the same kind of paint to make a radiator that, together with its twisting tubes, makes it appear organic. She calls it Blush, and it’s easy to see why.

Blush radiator by Thorunn Arnadottir 620x459magnify

Blush clearly mimics the appearance of a capillary, the smallest type of blood vessels. They facilitate the exchange of nutrients as well as waste materials and are often depicted in illustrations as having blue and red halves. Thorunn said, “Blush is a very important organ of the house. Regulates the temperature and keeps it warm and alive.”

I’d love to see more appliances that change color depending on their state. Perhaps a fridge that turns gray when there’s spoiled food inside. Or a bathroom door that turns brown to tell you that someone just dropped bombs inside.

Michael Bay and Crew Attacked on the Set of Transformers While Filming in Hong Kong

Having grown up in the 80s and being a huge fan of the Transformers toys I can admit to wanting to punch Michael Bay in the face over the horrible Transformers films. Bay and his crew were on the set of the latest installment in the franchise and were filming in the streets of Hong Kong, when Bay and his crew were attacked by four “drugged up punks.”

baymagnify

Bay said of the attack, “The story… being passed around is not all true! Yes, some drugged up guys were being belligerent a—- to my crew for hours in the morning of our first shoot day in Hong Kong. One guy rolled metal carts into some of my actors trying to shake us down for thousands of dollars to not play his loud music or hit us with bricks.”

Apparently, the four assailants were demanding a payment of $12,900 for the “inconvenience” caused by Bay and his crew as they filmed Transformers: Age of Extinction on the streets of Hong Kong. Bay said when he and the crew refused to be extorted the assailants became violent and the police ultimately came in arrested the men.

Bay said, “Every vendor where we shot got paid a fair price for our inconvenience, but he wanted four times that amount. I personally told this man and his friends to forget it we were not going to let him extort us. He didn’t like that answer. So an hour later he came by my crew as we were shooting, carrying a long air conditioner unit. He walked right up to me and tried to smack my face, but I ducked (and) threw the air unit on the floor and pushed him away. That’s when the security jumped on him.”

What’s more interesting to me than a group of people wanting to smash Michael Bay in the face is that vendors in the area where they were shooting made somewhere in the area of $3000 for the inconvenience of the movie filming in the streets outside.

Bay continued, “It took seven big guys to subdue him… He actually bit into one of the guard’s Nike shoes – insane. Thank god it was an Air Max, the bubble (at the front of the shoe) popped, but the toe was saved.”

GestureWorks Gameplay Lets You Make Touch Controls for PC Games: DIY Mobile Ports

The touch-friendly interface of Windows 8 led to the rise of portable computers with touchscreens. Those that run Windows 8 often have decent specs, enough to run modern PC games. The problem is that almost none of these games are optimized for touchscreens. GestureWorks wants to help solve that problem with Gameplay, a Windows 8 app that lets you make virtual controllers for PC games.

gestureworks gameplay for windows 8 620x413magnify

Yep, that’s Skyrim on a touchscreen. GestureWorks Gameplay has a simple drag and drop interface. You can make d-pads, joysticks and buttons of different sizes and colors, then map them to mouse buttons or keyboard keys. It also lets you map gestures, so you don’t have to fill up your screen with buttons.

As shown in the video, another convenient feature of GestureWorks Gameplay is that you can share controllers with other people. This means you may not even have to create a virtual gamepad; just download someone else’s configuration and you’re good to go.

gestureworks gameplay for windows 8 3 300x250
gestureworks gameplay for windows 8 4 300x250
gestureworks gameplay for windows 8 5 300x250

Penny Arcade’s Mike Krahulik loves this app and uses it on his Surface Pro. I’d rather use physical controllers to play games, but as an iPad owner I know how convenient it is to play games on the go or in bed. GestureWorks Gameplay seems like a decent compromise for Windows 8 gamers. The app will launch on November of this year, but you can try and enter the open beta by registering on its website.

Hevo Power Wireless EV Chargers Coming to NYC Disguised as Manhole Covers

One of the biggest challenges in rolling out a electric vehicle charging system in cities around the world is where to place the chargers and how to wire them into the electric grid. Some interesting wireless electric charging devices are expected to land in New York City in early 2014 from a company called Hevo Power. The coolest part about these wireless charging systems isn’t the fact that they don’t need wires, but rather that they hide in plain sight looking like manhole covers.

mancharger 2magnify

Hevo CEO and Founder Jeremy McCool says that the idea to hide his wireless EV charges as manhole covers came to him while walking down the streets of NYC. He said:

I was walking down the street, pondering how wireless charging could be deployed. I was standing at 116th and Broadway, and I was looking down and saw a manhole cover. And thought, that’s the ticket. There are no cords, no hazards. Everything can be underneath the manhole cover.

That realization is where the idea of the company’s wireless charging systems came from. Hevo plans to roll out the charging systems in Washington Square Park in early 2014. The initial wireless chargers will be usable by a pair of Smart ForTwo EVs operated by NYU. The wireless charging technology from Hevo uses resonance charging rather than inductive charging used by other EV charging systems.

Hevo Power says that inductive charging is inefficient, but it’s resonance system uses coils in the vehicle and the charging plate connected with capacitors that resonate a specific frequency. That resonance technology minimizes energy losses, and allows energy to transfer at a faster rate and across a wider gap. The Hevo wireless charging system has three components including the power station that can be bolted to the street or embedded in the pavement. The receiver has to be connected to the EV battery system and a smartphone app is used to help drivers line the vehicle up on the charger to start charging.

mancharger 3magnify

Hevo’s current system is classified as a Level 2 charging station providing 220 V and up to 10 kW of energy. The system can produce more than 10 kW of energy depending on the application. Hevo is talking with major companies that operate large vehicle fleets including Pepsi, Walgreens, and City Harvest to potentially use the system for larger fleets of electric vehicles.

Taco Bell Sells Ice Cream Tacos and Nachos: Run for the Freezer

Gamers have a convenient new food available for when they need a break from GTA V. It involves Taco Bell, but doesn’t have any diced tomatoes or shredded lettuce on it. How would you like some ice cream tacos or nachos from your friends at Taco Bell? Of course you would. Then it’s back to blowing stuff up.

taco bell1magnify

These Taco Bell treats are available right now at Walmart. They have chocolate tacos with chocolate sauce and sprinkles and cinnamon nachos with caramel sauce and toffee. Unlike Choco Tacos, these aren’t ready made. It’s a DIY kit for $3 and the ice cream and whipped cream is not included.

Still, it’s a pretty cool way to get yourself some grub when you hit the pause button.
