Ford Vibrating Shift Knob Tells Drivers When to Shift: Semi-Automatic Transmission

Earlier this month we saw a car with a joystick shift lever. It looks cool, but it doesn’t have any additional function. Ford engineer Zachary Nelson made a more high-tech shift lever mod that’s geared towards newbie drivers. It’s a shift knob that vibrates to tell you when to shift gears.

The shift knob is based on the Arduino Pro Mini microcontroller. Using an Android app and the OpenXC Vehicle Interface, the knob “monitors the vehicle’s speed, RPM and accelerator pedal position. Based on this information, the application calculates and then indicates to the driver when he or she should shift by vibrating the shift knob.” Additionally, the knob can be set to prioritize speed or fuel economy. Zach used a motor from an Xbox 360 controller to make the knob vibrate and then designed and 3D printed the knob’s case. It was then installed onto the manual shift lever from a Ford Mustang.

Start your browser’s engine and head to OpenXC to find out how to make a vibrating shift knob. Or not.

Chroma Squad: Assemble Your Own Superhero Team… TV Show

Super Sentai shows like Bioman, Fiveman and of course the American adaptation Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers were a staple of my childhood. If you’re like me and you’ve always dreamed of assembling your own team of live-action superheroes, Chroma Squad might be the game for you. Sort of.

chroma squad by behold studios

Chroma Squad is an upcoming game for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android (Sorry Windows Phone!). It’s currently being developed by Behold Studios, the developer behind Knights of Pen & Paper. If you played KoP&P, Chroma Squad’s premise and gameplay won’t surprise you: it’s a game about a group of stuntmen who decided to strike out on their own and make a TV studio. You’ll then help the stuntmen buy props, shoot TV episodes – including the neverending battles – and influence the show’s storyline, all to achieve your ultimate goal: to save Earth to attract audiences.

Put your costume on, swing your arms wildly in the air while nodding vigorously then finally punch the air and summon your MegaBrowserZord. Pledge at least $15 (USD) on Kickstarter to earn a desktop version of Chroma Squad as a reward.

Glitch Textiles: Your Blanket Was Not Shut Down Properly

If you liked Benjamin Berg’s glitch art throw pillows, check out Phillip Stearn’s Glitch Textiles. With the help of professional knitters and weavers, Stearns turns patterns generated from broken digital cameras and binary files into blankets and tapestries.

This must be extremely embarrassing for computers. You can buy knitted and woven blankets and tapestries from Glitch Textiles for $250-$350 (USD). And when the robot uprising commences, you will be one of the first to go.

Digital Carjacking: The Smarter They Are, The Dumber They Are

Modern automobiles benefit from increasingly small and smart computers, which can help control or augment everything from a car’s dashboard display to fundamental functions like steering. But as the world is slowly realizing, if something runs software, that thing can be hacked. That’s what Forbes recently found out thanks to a demonstration by two computer security experts.

Forbes’ Andy Greenberg met with Charlie Miller – a security engineer at Twitter – and Chris Valasek – the Director of Security Intelligence at security services consulting firm IOActive – to experience firsthand how today’s high-tech cars can be fooled. Charlie and Chris connected to one of the Electronic Control Units or ECUs of a Toyota Prius and proceeded to do all sorts of dangerous tweaks with it on the fly.

Charlie and Chris are working under a grant from DARPA to expose vulnerabilities in cars. Greenberg also drove a Ford Escape that both security experts hacked in similar ways. When Greenberg spoke to a Toyota spokesperson, he was told that the hack in the video above didn’t really concern them because it involved gaining access to the car and physically connecting a device to it. But the reason why Charlie and Chris didn’t bother to do it wirelessly is because that part has already been proven, way back in 2010:

Yeah these things need to be patched now. These videos are extremely troubling.

NapAnywhere Lets You Catch a Few Zzz’s Anytime, Anywhere

Tired? Sleepy? Then take a nap whenever and wherever you want to with NapAnywhere. It’s not the first take-anywhere pillow in the market (remember the Ostrich pillow?), but it’s more user-friendly and portable compared to some alternatives.

NapAnywhere

So what is NapAnywhere? It’s a head-support pillow that gives you the right amount of support when you’re sleeping in an upright position. It was created by a physician, combining engineering, architecture, and even a little bit of origami into the final design. Most people use U-shaped pillows as their headrest when they’re sleeping on the go, but if you’ve tried taking a half-hour nap on those things, then you probably already know how uncomfortable they can be.

The NapAnywhere flattens into a disc for easy storage when it’s not in use. When you want to take a nap, just unfold and it’s ready to use. NapAnywhere just hit its goal on Kickstarter, so it will be going into production.

My Little Proton Pack: Ghostbusting is Magic

What happens when you combine the chattiness of Pinky Pie with Ghostbusters? You get this awesomely cute My Little Pony proton pack. It won’t capture ghosts, but it will turn that frown upside down.

my little proton pack

This comes from a friend of Judson Hudson who loves to cosplay as a Ghostbuster and Pinkie Pie. An odd combination, but a winning one for little girls and Bronies. This custom proton pack lights up and plays all kinds of sounds.

In fact, just like Pinkie Pie, it seems like it is hard to shut this thing up. Check out the video for all of the sounds this thing does.

Sweat Machine Turns Sweat Into Water You Can Drink

Would you drink your sweat? Obviously, we’d all choose to drink water if we had a choice. But if there’s no clean water, would you drink sweat instead?

The Sweat Machine was created by engineer Andreas Hammar upon the request of Unicef.

Sweat Machine

It essentially purifies human sweat to turn it into drinking water. It’s not being used as a tool to tackle water shortages, but as a means to raise awareness on the issue.

Unicef recently brought out the machine to offer a glass of fresh sweat to visitors and footballers at last week’s Gothia Cup soccer tournament.

Sweat Machine1

The Sweat Machine uses water filtration technology called Membrane Distillation that was developed by HVR and The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. It uses a plastic cassette where the sweat to be filtered is heated into vapor and made to circulate between two membranes. This separates non-volatile substances effectively.

Hammar explained that a sweaty t-shirt can provide about 10ml of water, or just about a mouthful. Just think of how many sweaty shirts you’d need for a full glass of water.

Fishbowl Toilet: Swim or Get off the Pot

Do you love fish? I mean really love fish? To the point where you have to watch them swimming as you pee? If the answer is yes, then don’t flounder and check out this fishbowl toilet today.

Or if you want to send a gangster style message, give it as a gift with a note attached saying that “Luca Brasi pees with the fishes.” Just replace Luca Brasi’s name with your friend’s name. And yes, they will be peeing with the fishes.

Poor fish. That’s just how they wanted to live their life, watching other life-forms excavate their bowels and bladders.

Plants vs. Zombies Ported to Sega Genesis: Altered Plant

PopCap’s tower defense game Plants vs. Zombies is available on pretty much every modern gaming device, from PCs to smartphones. And it’s also on at least one classic console: the Sega Genesis aka the Mega Drive. The Penny-Arcade Report’s Ben Kuchera stumbled upon this 16-bit curio at PAX Australia.

plants vs zombies sega genesis port ben kuchera

Unsurprisingly, the port is an unofficial and illegal game. Dave Cudrev of Retrospekt bought a copy of the game on eBay for around $30 (USD) from a Russian coder. YouTuber Stepan V, whose video of the game appears below, was also able to snag one from an “underground retro video game market” in Russia. The game’s graphics have taken a considerable hit, plus it’s in Russian, but otherwise it seems to be the same as the original game.

It would be hilarious if it got DLC via the Mega-CD.

11th Doctor Mr. Potato Head, Master of Time and Spud

It seems they have a Mr. Potato Head for everyone now. Many superheroes have one in their likeness and even some of the Star Trek crew, but I never thought I would see a Doctor Who version of the toy. It’s crazy, but awesome. Or is it terrible! I honestly don’t know.

doctor who potato head

Doctor Spud has eight removable parts, and as you can see he has his fez and sonic screwdriver. He can’t be without those. You can pre-order him now and he ships this August. I suppose it’s just a matter of time before we see the other Doctors in potato form too.

You can find it at Bigbadtoystore for $24.99(USD).
