The Golf Cart Hovercraft: Not Your Father’s Hovercraft – Your Grandfather’s Hovercraft

When I think of hovercraft, I think of James Bond on a military ride that hovers fast and zips all over the place – not a golf cart. Perhaps this is what retired spies drive on the weekend.

hovercraft golf cart

The hover golf cart is powered by a 65hp twin-cylinder Hirth engine and its nine-blade axial-flow ducted fan propels the craft up to 45 mph and 9 inches off the ground. It will carry four passengers and two golf bags. This thing will let you golf in style while you are complaining about your aching hip and young people. Here’s some footage of PGA golfer Bubba Watson taking his hovercart for a spin:

Pretty sweet. If you like what this thing has to offer, it can be yours for $58,000(USD) over at Hammacher Schlemmer. Now you just have to find a golf course that is okay with it.

Spider-Man Spidey Sense T-Shirt: My Wallet is Tingling!

Spider-Man’s Spider Sense alerts him to danger and allows his body to react on its own to avoid attacks. Thinkgeek’s Tingling Electronic Spidey Sense T-shirt on the other hand only alerts you when someone – or something – is behind you. But at least you don’t have to get bit by – or look for – a radioactive spider.

Actually there’s nothing special about the T-shirt itself. It comes with a clip-on proximity sensor that also has motors to make it vibrate. When someone approaches at least 5ft. behind you, the device will emit a pulse, emulating Spider-Man’s power. The pulses become more frequent the closer someone is to you. Wait… is this a naughty toy?

I wonder if it will still work if you wear it under a hoodie.

thinkgeek spider man spider sense t shirt 3You can pre-order the t-shirt from ThinkGeek for $40 (USD). It won’t be released until October, but I have a feeling it’ll be sold out way before then. I bet tinkerers will be selling replicas of the gadget online before we know it.

40 Foot Dragon Skull Shows up on a Beach

This is what it would look like if dragons actually existed and we uncovered their bones. This 40 foot dragon skull is amazing and scary. I would hate to run into this thing on the beach. As if by magic, this massive dragon skull appeared on Charmouth Beach in Dorset, England.

It’s part of a promotion for HBO’s Game of Thrones, since Blinkbox now has Season Three of the series available for streaming. This was a great way to announce it as well as scare beachgoers.

It took a team of three people two months to sculpt this thing. How they got it into place is a mystery. Hopefully they leave it there for brave kids to play with it in perpetuity.

Princess Rescue for the Atari 2600: Sorry Mario, But Our Princess is in Another Console

Demakes are one of the ways that creative gamers to express their nostalgia for the games they grew up with. Though I must say, I never expected I’d see a demake of the already ancient Super Mario Bros. It’s called Princess Rescue, a Mario clone for the Atari 2600.

Animator Chris Spry is Princess Rescue’s Miyamoto. In an interview with Wired, Spry said that he was inspired by an Atari 2600 demake of Mega Man. With the help of a programming software called Batari BASIC and just 32 kilobytes of memory, Spry was able to make 16 levels worth of homage to one of the most beloved games of all time.

Mario’s Princess Rescuer’s stomach is a black hole! As with Ed Fries’ Halo 2600, Spry partnered with Atari Age for a proper release of his game, cartridge and all.

You can order Princess Rescue from Atari Age for $30 (USD). It already has two favorable reviews! I highly recommend you read Wired’s article on the game as well; it has a shot of a portable Atari 2600 that Spry made for himself.

The Bradley Timepiece: A Watch That You Don’t Have to Watch

A company called Eone has come up with one of the most innovative wristwatches you’ll ever see. Unlike other timepieces that display or announce the time, The Bradley allows you to determine the time through touch. It’s a watch that can be used discreetly, but more importantly it’s a watch that blind people can use.

the bradley timepiece watch by eone

The Bradley has a Swiss quartz movement, but instead of a digital display or hands,it has two ball bearings. The one on its face indicates minutes, while the one embedded on the side indicates the hour. The ball bearings are connected to the movement via magnets. The hour and minute markers are fairly large and textured. In addition, the marker for the 12th hour has a distinct shape.

Here’s a demo of The Bradley:

So why is it called The Bradley? The watch was named after Navy Lt. Bradley Snyder, a former bomb diffuser. Bradley lost his eyesight in 2011 when he stepped on an IED in Afghanistan. But with the support of his loved ones, Bradley faced his new life head on. A year after he went blind, he won two gold medals and one silver medal for swimming at the 2012 Paralympics.

Pledge at least $128 (USD) on Kickstarter to receive a Bradley timepiece as a reward.

4th String Jaegers Pokes Fun at Pacific Rim’s Robot Names: Kaijokes

Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro said that he wanted the robots to be unique. Apparently that also applies to their names. How else do you explain monikers like Gipsy Danger and Striker Eureka? And now we have 4th String Jaegers:

pacific rim 4th string jaegers

4th String Jaegers is a single purpose blog. Its contributors use the Jaeger Designer web app that Warner Bros. made to promote the movie to create hilarious posters featuring their own ideas for Jaeger names. Some of them bring countries to the mix to make puns, while others go off on another tangent and replace the names with funny captions instead. Sadly some of them use offensive language, so the blog isn’t safe for kids.

e-David Painting Robot: Etsy Automated

Robots are slowly but surely taking all of our jobs. Even jobs that we thought were safe – like being an artist. e-David is a robotic painter developed by the University of Konstanz in Germany. It takes photographs, then uses its software to develop a unique set of brush strokes to make a one-of-a-kind painting of the subject. There’s another job gone.

edavid

It creates using five different brushes and a palette of 24 paint colors. It can also change its painting style on the fly, making adjustments to future brush strokes by observing the results of those it has already made. e-David even signs its work with a reverse-written signature, which is a nice artistic touch.

The team built the robot painter to learn more about the techniques human artists use. They want to boil painting techniques down to their basics by creating algorithms that can mimic them.

Sure, e-David paints a great painting, but can it cut it’s own ear off like Van Gogh? Nope. No passion. No crazy. No heart. How is that art again?

Smart Diapers Track Your Baby’s Health by Checking Their Pee

You can get a lot of information from one sampling of urine. That’s what the folks from Pixie Scientific think, because that’s the concept they’re working on with Smart Diapers.

Smart Diaper

Smart Diapers are exactly what they sound like. The “smart” part is because of the fact that the diaper tests the urine the baby passes on the diaper itself. Parents can then scan the QR code on the diaper to bring up a report about their child’s health. Of course, it shouldn’t substitute urine tests that hospitals run, though.

The Smart Diaper tracks changes in the baby’s urine, which can potentially provide information about signs of urinary tract infections, prolonged dehydration, or risks for kidney problems.

Pixie Scientific explains: “Smart Diapers alert you to certain conditions that require immediate attention and also track your child’s health for months or years, automatically looking for emerging trends.” They add: “By taking useful data from a wet Smart Diaper, we make use of something that would normally be thrown directly into the trash.”

The Smart Diaper is currently up for funding on Indiegogo.

Hello Lamp Post Lets You Have a Conversation with Your City

How many people do you know in your city? Hello Lamp Post won’t exactly let you meet or talk with anyone specific, but it will allow you to listen to the thoughts, comments, and other random ramblings of others who live in the city.

Hello Lamp Post

First things first, what is Hello Lamp Post? It’s a city-wide experiment that involves turning objects throughout the city (like the mailbox shown above, or lamp posts, for example) into interactive objects. These objects have been assigned with a unique reference code. Whenever someone wants to “wake” them up, all they have to do is text “Hello [object] #reference code” to 0117-325-9898.

hello lamp post 2

The object will respond with a question for you to answer. If someone has “woken” them up before, then you’ll receive their answer instead, followed by the option to add your own message so you can join in the conversation.

The concept launches today, July 15th in Bristol, UK. It’s a fun way to get to know your city and its other inhabitants in the most unconventional way possible.

Check out what sort of street objects are having the most conversations here.
