Microwave Supercharged with Raspberry Pi: Picrowave

The microwave is the lazy hungry man’s best friend. Developer Nathan Broadbent went and modified his oven to become even more lazy user-friendly. His Picrowave oven is voice-activated, reads bar codes, can be taught how to cook a particular item and more.

Broadbent used a Raspberry Pi to smarten up his oven. He even rewired its touch panel and made a new interface for it. The thing is, he doesn’t need to use the new panel, because he made the oven understand voice commands.

He also made an online database containing instructions for cooking. The instructions are tied to bar codes, which are read by a scanner that Broadbent connected it to his oven. In short, all he has to do is scan an item and the microwave will find out how to zap it from the database using Wi-Fi. If it’s not there, Nathan can just add an entry. He also made an online interface so that he can control the oven from a website, even from a mobile device. Finally, the oven can also tweet when its done cooking.

Valve Pipeline Educational Project: By Young Nerds, for Young Nerds. And Hopefully Half-Life 3.

Like other top developers, Valve often gets asked by kids who dream of working in the videogame industry about what they need to do to get in and what the experience is like. The company has responded with Pipeline, a project aimed at high school students that will try to answer those very questions. One curious twist is that Pipeline is also run by high school students who are currently interns at Valve.

While it may seem dismissive of Valve to “merely” assign kids to help educate other kids, I’m sure these interns have been duly screened by the company beforehand. For instance, the Pipeline kids were the ones who made the announcement video below. Besides, these kids should know the best way to reach out to their peers.

Sign up at the Pipeline website to find out when they release more details about it. The bit about Valve testing to see if they can train high school kids to work in the industry is quite interesting. I wonder how the people who currently work in the gaming industry would feel about the possibility of having such competition for work, or even finding themselves working under someone young enough to be their kid. And is paid in virtual hats.

STAND Urinal: Don’t Pee in the Sink

Many people practice clean bathroom habits, but just as many are pretty nasty. Enter Kaspars Jursons’s redesign of the toilet, where he puts a sink on top of the urinal. Relieve yourself and immediately clean up. It puts the cleaning part right in your face. If you still don’t wash your hands after using this you have real problems.

The toilet is called STAND. It’s a great idea, but it would never work. People would be peeing in those sinks just for fun – and how clean can you really get with people’s aim being so bad, since it is so close to the urinal.

It’s just a concept, but not a terrible one. It just depends on people being respectable and not taking a whiz in the wrong section.

Annoying Panes: Talking Window Transmits Ads While Commuters Sleep

It’s been a long train ride and you’re starting to get drowsy. So you lean a bit on the window and take in the scenery flashing by… when you suddenly hear a voice telling you about some new gadget or some recent markdowns.

This newest advertising marvel is aptly called the Talking Window and it was developed by Audiva.

It’s part of an advertising experiment from Germany’s BBDO for Sky Deutschland. The transmitter uses high-frequency vibrations and streams this onto the glass to send out the audio message. The vibrations are then interpreted as sound by the human brain. This technology is called “bone conduction” and is currently being used by deaf people, the military and Google Glass among other things.

The cool thing is that only the people seated next to the window can hear this message. The uncool thing is that it bugs most people who experience it, probably because their nap or rest time is being interrupted by a window that’s churning out ads.

In fact, if you look at the video closely, you’ll notice that the people who heard the messages look confused and somewhat irked. I know I would be.

Buy the 11th Doctor’s First Car on eBay

I know that you really had your heart set on buying the TARDIS, but Matt Smith is not getting rid of that. But he is parting with his first car. This Vauxhall Corsa was the first vehicle he purchased at age 18. It’s a 2000 model and it still runs, with only 60,000 miles on it.

“While I have been travelling the universe in my TARDIS, my much-loved Vauxhall Corsa, aka The Shed, has been parked outside my parents’ house. As my first ever car, it has seen lots of adventures, not to mention a fair few mishaps (hence the dents). I’ll be very sad to see it go but I understand my parents want their driveway back! I’d love to find a new owner for this great little car, particularly as all the profits will go to Starlight, which is an amazing charity that brightens the lives of seriously and terminally ill children.”

Twinkind Personalized 3D Figurines: Because You Don’t Deserve a Life-size Statue

We’ve yet to preserve our likenesses in holograms, but a German studio called Twinkind has the next best thing: a highly detailed 3D printed figurine of yourself. Imagine playing a tabletop RPG as yourself! With your dog as your sidekick!

Twinkind uses a multi-camera scanner that takes lots of images from all angles. Apparently this process only takes a split-second. Then they process the images from the scanner and turn it into a 3D model, which will then be used to print figurines in full color. After 2 to 5 weeks, you’ll get the Mini-Me to your Dr. Evil. Twinkind will keep a digital file of your shot so you can order more figurines in the future.

Unfortunately, Twinkind isn’t for everyone. First of all, it’s very expensive: the smallest figurine is about 6″ tall and costs about $290 (USD), while the most expensive one is about $1,680 and is about 14″tall. Second, before you become a collectible that only your family will want to collect, you have to visit Twinkind’s shop in Hamburg, Germany to be scanned. Do you love yourself that much?

Use Your Brain to Set Fire to This Brain

This 15 foot-tall steel brain sculpture can be controlled by your brain waves. It is called Mens Amplio (that means “mind expanding” in Latin). The interactive brain and head has been embedded with LEDs in the branching structures that represent neurons. Those are made from clear light-diffusing acrylic. The built-in LEDs show a sequence of light displays, which are controlled by an EEG reader placed on your head.

Raspberry Pi and Arduino processors are used to translate your brain waves into light patterns in real time. The huge brain also has flames on the outside, triggered only when the participant can successfully meditate.

It will show up at Burning Man this year, and then they want to take the giant head to schools in California to demonstrate it to kids and get them excited about science. technology and fabrication. The video below shows a 3D rendering of what you the finished sculpture will look like (without the flames.)

The Mens Amplio project is seeking additional funds on Indiegogo, if you want to take part.

Human Speaker: Manual Auto Tune

There are dozens of ways we can modify our voice, but designer Nic Wallenberg made a silly device that bypasses the vocal chords altogether to make unusual sounds come out of one’s mouth. Hence the name Human Speaker.

The Human Speaker looks just like a neck collar, except it has sockets for two wires in front. I’m not sure what it’s connected to, but according to Wallenberg the collar sends vibrations to the wearer’s upper throat. All the wearer has to do is open his mouth and a sound will come out. It’s like reverse ventriloquism. The wearer can then play with the sound as one would his own voice, by moving his mouth and lips. The Human Speaker can only make two notes at a time though, so you’ll need several people to make complex music. Or you can do what Wallenberg did:

Lernstift Vibrating Pen Making a Buzz on Kickstarter

Earlier this year we heard about Lernstift, a concept for a pen that helps kids spell and write correctly by vibrating to point out mistakes. The folks behind this promising invention have now launched a fundraiser on Kickstarter. The questions I had when I first saw it remain unanswered though.

Inventor Falk Wolsky’s idea for the pen remains the same. Its basic functions are still to oversee the user’s spelling and the legibility of his handwriting. When it detects a mistake, it vibrates to alert the user. But with the launch of their fundraiser, Wolsky and his colleagues have revealed more about the hardware inside the pen. Lernstift has a motion sensor, a gyroscope, an accelerometer and a magnetometer. The pen’s processor will use these devices to create a 2D image of the user’s handwriting, which it will then analyze using a handwriting recognition software.

While the team is confident in the pen’s hardware, they’re still working on the best way to process the data that its sensors gather to ensure a quick and accurate response. They’ve also revealed that they’re not working on their own handwriting recognition engine and will instead license one from an established company. That should make it easier for Lernstift to be released and updated to support more languages; the pen will only be able to recognize English and German when it launches, but they supposedly have access to a database of over 40 languages.

Pledge at least £89 (~$135 USD) on Kickstarter to get a Lernstift as a reward. I have to say though, it’s not clear at the moment just how polished or far along they are with the pen. Notice how they didn’t demonstrate even the pen’s basic functions in their pitch video.

As I said in my previous post about the pen, I’m still not sold on its usefulness. It’s still not clear how it will help you find out the right spelling, form or grammar. Yes, it could buzz the moment you make a mistake, but what then? How do you find out what you’re supposed to do? I’m hopeful that Wolsky and his team will answer these questions soon. Also, do kids still use pens?

Clap-Off Bra Deserves a Standing Ovation

Here’s an invention that would go well with the Clapper: a bra that unclasps when you clap. Now that’s a reason to turn the lights down low. You’d think this gadget would be a hit on the Internet, but its Kickstarter was actually a massive flop. I am disappoint. Or not.

Instructables member Randy Sarafan posted instructions to make the silly undergarment. But he didn’t come up with the concept; he only tried to replicate a novelty item that’s apparently already being sold in Syrian markets. Here’s a NSFW demo of the bra:

The fact that the bra already exists may be one of the reasons why Randy’s Kickstarter didn’t succeed. We need someone to import the thing; not invent it. Then again I think his cheesy pitch video is mostly to blame. As of now it seems like it’s easier to build the bra than negotiate with the Syrian lingerie experts, so head to Instructables for Randy’s walkthrough.
